Changing oil on the first generation chevrolet volt is easy.

Definitely don't want to tighten the filter too much. You can damage the O-ring and can cause leaks. Also, the Volt takes about *3.7qts* of 5W-30 Dexos1. Or 0W-30 for extremely cold environments.

Thank you for the video Use jackstands - NOT jacks - before body parts are underneath OR use wheel ramps (something solid to stop being crushed) Hand tighten oil filter and then only 1/8 to 1/4 turn more.

Oil spec is 5W-30, shows right on the oil filler cap.

2017 Volt uses 5W-20 which is no different than 0W-20. Oil filler caps are replaceable I have a collection of them that people left at gas pumps and auto zones,

It is very important to only use 5w-30 oil with this vehicle. I would also shy away from the cheaper filters like the Fram and use an original AC Delco. It's designed for the 2 year oil change interval.

I would not hesitate to use a Fram XG (Ultra Synthetic) oil filter. However, I would not use some of their cheaper filters. When I had a question about my Mobil 1 oil filter and called support, Fram answered the phone.

10w 30 and 5w 30 are not going to make that much of a difference and it certainly isn't going to hurt anything. Adding over a quart more of oil than the specs call for will.

Designed for? What features increase change intervals? I was designed for 5 year oil change intervals, It says so in the owner's manual. Because I'm cheap, lazy, & I fuck up everything I touch, so it states. And I thought it was because I just don't give a shit.

Your not supposed to wrench the oil filter on it is only supposed to be hand tight

It looks like the 1.4 liter engine only takes 3.7 quarts of oil and you overfilled it by over a quart. I wouldn't be so concerned about using the wrong oil weight as I would putting that much more oil in. Also the gasket on oil filters are designed to be hand tightened you can actually cause a leak if you over tighten it. Can't wait to do the first oil change on my new 2017. Also I just bought and would recommend a pair of rhino ramps for oil changes on your volt I never needed them for my Subaru Outback and the dealer did the one oil change on my 2013 volt that I leased. You can get them for 40 bucks at Walmart and they just barely scrape the front air dam when you go up.

you shold use 5w30 5w30 is the best choice for volt never use 10w oils its hard on seals and the engine 0w30 is ok to use in negative temps.

Do you put on a new washer on the drain plug every time?

I don't but it all depends on how much the washer is worn. If the bolt is over tighten it can ruin the washer. Washers job is to seal the drain bolt.

My 2014 Volt only holds 3.7 qts of oil with filter change.

Also, the oil the Volt needs is 5w-30 not 10w-30. It even says it on your fill cap. You may want to swap that oil out since the engine is not designed for 10w-30.

@@JustVlads You did, I've read reports that as little as 3 qts is enough to put the oil level smack dab in the middle of the stick on a gen1. 3.7 qts being the max.

My wife owns a 2017 volt and it takes mobil one or a comparable synthetic but as someone said above with a filter the car take 4.3 quarts of oil not 5 as he put in.
