In 1820, a group of Cheyenne and their Sioux allies venture deep into Crow territory to seek revenge on their hated enemy. The results were truly tragic.

Excellent presentation, factual and heart wrenching story of how tenuous life had been for people on the North American continent just a little over 200 years ago. I do not know what the average life expectancy was for the Cheyenne or Sioux and any other tribal members on the Great Plains but it had to be in the 50s at most. Continuous wars, Disease and lack of food at times really had to take it's toll on life. If a member of any tribe reached the age of 60 they were lucky. Perhaps the editors and or producers could comment on this point.

Since the US gov't failed with it's genocidal tendencies, the Cheyenne and Lakota (or Sioux, to use the Nazi reference) still exist and have developed these shiny braids called "Web's eights", or something like that, somewhere up in the Unknown Parade of Knowledge (or one of their Educational or Casino websites), perhaps the commentor could learn to address the living.

Life was definitely tough living in the upper plains, taking a toll on the various tribes with extreme winters, and hot summers--- That's why the hunter/gatherer tribes protected their hunting grounds with such ferocity--- The competition for beaver pelts, and bison was fierce-- While the Eastern woodland and SW tribes evolved into a more agrarian lifestyle expanding and stabilizing their food sources and villages, the plains tribes roamed the vast plains following the bison and antelope herds-- Protecting their lands was the only way to avoid starvation-----

@Jason Brown American Indians have been their own worst enemy for most of their existence. If they were a unified people before Europeans came they would have stood a much better chance at being a formidable foe but they were too busy undermining and warring against each other to be of any real threat against anything bigger than a company of troopers.
@jasonbrown372

@@dmac2899 That's no excuse for the US gov't to undermine and rewrite every treaty with the individual tribes as it developed westward, or for individual "prospectors" to constantly trespass after discovery of another vein of precious metal, or profitable animal hide, or land for cattle, or water, or land for the railroads. Plenty of "traditional" wars were fought and revenged and fought again generations later (some continue now), but history of the US itself is a continual conflict with their absolute worst enemy, the one that said kneel to pray and then bombed the church.

Great video! The Indians troubles didn't start with the white man. Great comment! The Indians' troubles didn't start with the white man, but the "White" men who lied, murdered and poisoned their way West were the progenitors of a culture still doing its' best to lie about their greed, planning, betrayals, and genocidal tendencies. We constantly hear insinuations and outright lies from racists and stunted-mindset proclamations from subdued racists about the Native peoples' deaths from the diseases washing over their lands that began naming themselves "Americans" after adopting the Haudenosaunee Confederacy's tri-fold pattern of gov't that allowed them to break their addiction to the inbreeding monarchies of "Feudal" Europe, but we seldom hear about that relief beyond an annual Thanksgiving Day parade, to such a degree that the small-minded still consider the survival of the current tribes a benefit bestowed upon them by the Grace of the White Race after the survivors of the US military and other whites were forced onto Reservations.

I live fairly close to the Tongue (Sheridan), and I have been unable to find any definitive location mentioned. One of our local historians thought it was likely just south of the modern day Wyoming/Montana state line simply due to the amount of artifacts, tipi rings, and other Crow leavings found in the area showing they spent a lot of time there, probably wintering as there was good hunting and plenty of trees. They summered in what is now Lodge Grass (misinterpreted...the actual Crow name is "greasy grass"), Montana, along the Little Bighorn River, so that at least narrows it down to the area between there and the Big Horn Mountains where the Tongue originates.

A nice and important one for the later history on the plains guys! Got myself a own theory about the next generation. Kicking Bird a chief of the Kiowa was supposed to be a half Crow, he looked brighter and more lanky than his Tribes men and by far the best diplomate in the Kiowa Nation. I believe his mother was sold from the north. The slave trading among the Indians is interesting a piece of the plains history but not easy to research. I heard Cheyenne and Crow don't get along in some important questions until today.... ;~) You researched very well as a old historian I tell! Both Tribes were known for their culture with the hair, Crow warriors extended theirs with horse hair and the Cheyenne were always described as the most handsome people of the plains. The role of the Lakota for eminent allies of the Cheyenne in relation to the Crow is important because the Sioux hatred of the Crow was a kind of natural law so to speak. Thank you for this beautiful poem of history and God's Blessing from Northern Germany! Ludwig

I appreciate the content and subscribed. Westward expansion and competing Fur Trade companies are an essential context of the inter-tribal warfare and alliances of this period. This context is essentially overlooked in this production. I suggest using American Indian sound tracks. There are some excellent artists, of these nations, that could be featured and given credit of course. I keep getting distracted by the art and video clips that randomly do or don’t match the narrative. More Still shots of authentic artifacts Might be helpful, that would offer a little visual interest and enhance the narrative too. Viewers who enjoyed this video might enjoy the film “Windwalker”. A critical review of that film and others might also be of interest to your patrons. Anyway, thanks for the content and I wish you all the best as you continue with these creative projects! PS .. the black/ white photo of horsemen in the snow ..historic or modern Reenactors? I’m thinking reenactors who are really serious.

@@daleanddelld6805 Yes, no argument. Famous example, Cortez defeats the Aztecs with help from peoples they had conquered. Perhaps there are other examples. I’m referring to this video and it’s historical context. Just as one recognizes that the American Revolution must be understood in the context of the clash between French and English Empires, this inter-tribal conflict also occurs within a broader significant context. I’m not arguing that Indians didn’t fight Indians or that Indians were always and only pure children of rainbows and star shine until the bad white people came. American Indians formed alliances, amplified traditional conflicts into wars of aggression and sought to dominate rather than to be dominated. Guns, whiskey and trade goods for furs and hides are an important part of that history. The fur trade was very hard core competitive and involved American Indians.
