This was one of those Tv westerns that had the similar style intro illustrated background when compared to a handful of others. They all had different theme songs, of course. I'm thinking of Maverick, Sugarfoot, Bronco and of course Cheyenne. For my money, Cheyenne had the best theme song although it could be applied to a modern-day transient. But to the mythical Old West, it denotes ruggedness, independence and a free spirit.

Loved this show. On every Monday night, Laramie on Tuesday, Wagon train Wednesday. Can't begin to tell you the memories this brings back as a 9-10 year old at the time. You'll never see shows or hear music like this ever again.

*_I was a boy when this show was on the tv and now I understand how united I was with boys and families back in the late 50s who watched regularly. We were entertained when there was one TV that the family watched together. Our parents are gone now and we who are left have grown old but hearing Cheyenne brings them back and we are young schoolboys again._*

Man, does this song ever bring tears to my eyes. It makes me think back when I was little, and played cowboys and Indians on my grandpa's farm. The lyrics sure paint a picture of a lonely man, and, the mention of "restless clouds up above" remind me of the big, white, puffy clouds against the open blue sky, along with the line "next pasture's always so green", which makes me think back on the summer days out in the country. To have that, and programs like this back again...

Immortal. One of the best theme songs ever. I just watched (on DVD) the first episode (from 1955). Besides Clint Walker, the episode has two of the greatest western character actors (John Doucette and Bob Wilke) , AND features James Garner's very first film appearance.

Clint Walker was one of the largest(6' 6") best built actors of all time. Look at him next to Jim Brown in the Dirty Dozen. He dwarfs the great fullback. Those poor horses had quite a load when he was in the saddle. My hero since 1958.

The Cheyenne song is my favourite tv song when tv shows had catchy hummable even singable themes. It's a lovely melody with beautiful lyrics about a man whose doesn't really know where he belongs and for whom a good indian is a live indian not a dead one as he was raised by them after they killed his parents.

The late-1950s and early-1960s had some of the best theme songs ever heard on the then-3 stations (ABC, CBS, and NBC). Warner Brothers (WB) in particular had this great theme, plus maybe the best theme song (with words) ever: Maverick. Love these two great western theme songs, and remember their music as much as if it was now 1959!

A clever but naughty schoolmate of mine used to tease a (very virtuous) girl we knew by singing. 'Diane, Diane, where will you be sleeping tonight? ? Lonely girl, Diane , &c.' We all laughed in spite of ourselves, and the guilty pleasure we felt. I hope that she has forgotten it, or if not, that she has forgiven us.

During its first season, "CHEYENNE" was part of the "WARNER BROS. PRESENTS" format, alternating with TV versions of "CASABLANCA" and "KINGS ROW". By January 1956, the other two were dropped, and dramatic anthology episodes alternated with "CHEYENNE" for the remainder of the season....and into another season {the anthology episodes were presented alternately under the title "CONFLICT", in 1956-'57}......

"The, wind that blows, It comes and goes, It's been your only home. But will the wild winds one day cease? Then you'll no longer roam." This song takes me back in time to my childhood in Coney Island when Cheyenne, Maverick, Sugarfoot and so many other westerns had great theme songs. I have never forgotten the lyrics to any of them. (I even won a westerns song contest a few years ago). I remember the 1950s with our little family in our little living room spending time together: those are priceless memories. I am forever grateful to my Mom and Dad for making the childhood that my brothers and I had a loving and happy one. These theme songs were part of the soundtrack of our lives.

This is one of the top TV theme songs, right up there with "Where Everybody Knows Your Name" and "Believe It or Not". The music by William Lava can make the hair on the back of your neck stand up; it holds it own against Schubert/Schumann. The lyrics are by Stan Jones, who wrote "Ghost Riders", arguably one of the greatest songs in any genre.
