This is from Herron Rail Productions. I saw this yesterday on RFD's Trains and Locomotives. While appreciated, these things are so choppy that it's hard to follow them and appreciate that this was what railroading looked like when I was a 20 something brakeman for the now defunct SP. You'll note all the defunct railroads in this video.

It was Bobby Bullermann, zookeeper and railfan from Milwaukee, who saved up to buy a movie camera in order to film train action, just like Howard Blackburn, J.M. Seidl, Donald J. Krofta, R.R. Wallin, Fred Crissey, Bill Price, H.R. Griffiths, John M.Prophet, III and, of course, the legendary Emery Gulash.

A time when private cars were just regular trains...

The timer is there because the uploader advertises and sells this and other stock footage on their website. So this is only a free preview. It is common practice when selling stock footage or pictures to include a watermark or timer etc so that it discourages other of re-using it.

It doesn't matter about the clock on the screen. This is the longest and best chronicle of American passenger trains, and freight, that I've seen. What a joy to see those Milwaukee Road Hiawatha's, Burlington Zephyrs, Erie Lackawanna (Norfolk and Western folks called it, "The Erie Lackamoney," lol!), rugged looking Penn Central E-units soldiering on, and, if you look at some of those autoracks, you'll see some classic old American vans and trucks. Yeah, I've seen this before, but I just have to keep coming back for more. Great, great video.

Ugly. what the reason for the silly timer in the center???
@davenwin19732 жыл бұрын
Around 39:56, the track map for Griffith Indiana is wrong in a couple of spots in the SE corner. The Erie Lackawanna actually goes south towards Crown Point that is labeled C&O, while what is labeled EL is actually the C&O, heading east towards Merrillville. The NYC line, that later became Penn Central made a town called Liverpool money from.the railroad, plus a couple of businesses that utilized that railroad line. Unfortunately, Conrail chose to decommission the line in 1976, and the other line I'm Liverpool didn't serve those businesses, that the companies closed, and Liverpool had East Gary (now Lake Station) annex them. Not sure why Conrail chose to not acquire the EL line, but a short line that used the line went bankrupt in 1979, and the portion from Hammond to North Judson Indiana was decommissioned, and the tracks ripped up in 1981. A few years ago, whatever railroad that owned the portion of the old EL going from Noth Judson to Monterrey Indiana was decommissioned and ripped up as well. As for the former C&O line, I'm not sure if that portion was profitable or not, but while it was the Chessie System, it was active until 1981, then the line they used via trackage rights in the Hegewisch neighborhood of Chicago was shut down. So the C&O was abandoned, and torn up in 1985, east of Griffith. The portion between LaCrosse and North Judson is still intact, still owned by CSX Today. Makes me wonder if CSX may have regretted eliminating their line under Chessie, now that they're running trains through Griffith again, via trackage rights along both CN lines (the original GT/CN and the former EJ&E).

The timer doesn't bother me, since I'm just thankful this treasure trove is available. A colorful array of passenger trains, seemingly from every carrier that came into Chicago, is represented - even L&N - which, to my understanding, lost it's Chicago and Eastern Illinois connection into the city by 1967. Looks like Gulf, Mobile and Ohio were not fans of washed passenger trains, and liked the E7 diesel. I'd love to know the name (or number) of each train in this clip, and their routes. Those deep yellow Milwaukee Road Hiawatha's were striking! Lots of shiny, silver Burlington Route trains. Also doesn't bother me that there's no sound.

Did you have to put those railroad scenes behind your time-code video? Dislike.

Awesome footage of so many fallen flags! And how about the colorful lashups we don’t see that anymore! And don’t worry I’m not gonna complain about the clock in the middle of the screen I mean this is free footage of a bygone era in railroading.

It was Bobby Bullermann, zookeeper and railfan from Milwaukee, who bought a movie camera and made movies of train action in Chicago, Milwaukee, Illinois, Wisconsin and elsewhere. Bobby really enjoyed filming train action besides working in the Milwaukee zoo.

The fact in this was only a preview of a video about classic trains in and around Chicago just before the advent of Amtrak and therefore the clock being there is understandable.

I find it amusing that it doesn't bother you. This isn't preserving footage. It's ruining it.
@arlLaFong8 жыл бұрын
I don't think you understand. This video is available for purchase. If you pay for it, your copy won't have the time stamp on it. The owners of this footage has put this time stamp on it to protect their copyright. None of these videos would be available were not for the companies that produce them.
@ArmpitStudios8 жыл бұрын
+Dave Bahnsen Oh, I understand perfectly. If the video were titled "free sample of our DVD" or if the info mentioned the *slightest* little thing about a pure, time code-free DVD version being available, people wouldn't complain. But as it is, it makes the uploader look like a dork, and all these people agree.
@arlLaFong8 жыл бұрын
I am sorry you look like a dork. I'm sure this wasn't their intention.

All this footage is in the Green Frog Video "Chicago Odyssey" without the timer. It's all 8mm home movies some guy took, hence no sound. I think the timer is deliberately there to keep people from copying it.
@seanycarr32265 жыл бұрын
The Milwaukee Road's Hiawathas still looked sleek just before Amtrak. But the tracks really looked like shit.
@atsf19204 жыл бұрын
The timer is to prevent piracy. It's so nobody can download the images and then sell them for profit. There is probably a DVD out there somewhere (for purchase) that would give you the unobstructed views.

I don't know if Burlington Northern made money on their intercity passenger service, but, judging by the speed of those trains, they were giving it 110%.

Give a railfan a time machine and where would they go and what would they ride?
@seanycarr32265 жыл бұрын
I would have given my eyeteeth to ride the Milwaukee Road from Chicago to Omaha which of course is not there anymore. Then the Rock Island from Chicago to the Quad Cities which of course is not there anymore except fortunately the tracks are still there. Then the Monon from Chicago to Indianapolis on the Hoosier. Then the Santa Fe from Chicago to Kansas City on the Super Chief. Finally the CNW's 400 from Chicago to South Dakota. That rounds out the top 5 railroads that I would have loved to ride. The honorable mention? The Burlington, Illinois Central and Gulf, Mobile & Ohio.

At first I thought this might be ripped off footage from Emery Gulash (think Green Frog Productions "Chicago Oddessey") The more I look at it, I don't think so. This footage's focus is much too soft, and the color i horrible. Clearly this is some low-dollar crud.

1970??? Amtrak didn't begin operations until May, 1971. GTW didn't start painting it's locomotives blue until 1972.
@paulw.woodring73044 жыл бұрын
So, the Amtrak clip was after May 1, '71, and with a paint scheme that I never saw before. Must have been a very early version of the phase I scheme. There is also quite a bit of other early Amtrak trains in the second half of this video. Also, Erie Lackawanna discontinued their last long-distance passenger train, "The Lake Cities", in early January of 1970, so let's call that clip Spring to Fall of '69 and the entire piece 1969 to 1972 - a really fascinating era in U. S. railroading. Too bad the one person further up couldn't stand the time code and gave up. He missed some real gems in the last part, including an F-M Milwaukee road switcher, EJ&E Baldwin center cabs, lots of odd-ball E-L power, and a Frisco/Mo Pac finale. Well worth my time, and putting up with the time code. Takes me back to the earliest days of my railfanning life. Most of it I never saw in Ohio, and a lot of what I did see, I didn't know what I was looking at because I was just a kid who wasn't around other older fans that much
