As a French theater history student, I must inform you that we do use the term vaudeville in France but as a theatrical genre. The plays are 2h long comedies which plots are quite basic, we usually describe them by "Oh dear, my husband!"or the lover in the closet. The genre was very popular in the 19th and early 20th century and we still play some of them, even La comédie Française (Imagine the royal opera house but for theater and in french) has played them in recent years. The Americans later took the term from us and gave it the meaning you explained. Just wanted to clear that up when I heard you say people didn't use the word vaudeville in Europe, sorry if it came out condescending haha !

Musics theater costumes are so interesting, especially when they need to be somewhat historically accurate so the costume designers have a lot to due due to the need to be movable and breathable (due to the lights and amount of moving) whilst also looking like those clothes would be worn during a specific time period so kudos to all the musical costume designers out there!

the word you're looking for around 4:15 is diegesis. musical numbers in chicago (the movie) are non-diegetic, as opposed to e.g. the cabaret musical numbers, which are diegetic (because characters are literally singers)
@katherinemorelle7115
@katherinemorelle7115 3 жыл бұрын
Well, except for the last song. That song is diagetic.
@mvn2106
@mvn2106 3 жыл бұрын
@@katherinemorelle7115 I feel like the last number is ambiguous about whether it's diegetic or all in Roxie's head. One can also make the argument that all of the musical sequences are diegetic and that its the narrative parts that are non-diegetic. I think the only number that can be said with 100% confidence of it's diegesis is All That Jazz, but then everything else depends on your interpretation.

I LOVE the movie Chicago. I thought they did a truly excellent job bringing a stage musical to screen, it’s not an easy task. Also, I adored Queen Latifah as Mama. Especially her showgirl version, because it’s not often you see plus sized women (especially plus sized women of colour) made to look so sensual, but in a way that isn’t at all a joke. She’s fine, that’s all there is to it.

"vaudeville" (sometimes written "vau-de-ville") does actually comes from French, it was a form low-comedy theater and often based on quiproquos, comical situations and sexual innuendoes. It was mostly present in the 18th & 19th centuries I think, and for the popular classes. However, you can find elements of it Romantic theater and particularly in Victor Hugo's plays. For exemple, his comedy/tragedy hybrid Hernani mixes a lot of different genres, including vaudeville : in act I, he used the very common trope of adultery (usually committed by the wife) and does a bunch of jokes which are straight out of your classic vaudeville play.

Chicago is my favorite movie of all time, i’ve easily seen it over 100 times. My favorite costume changes all the time, but the cut of the funny honey pink dress always stays with me. If you look at it as many times as i have you notice how intricate and difficult to make that dress is, even if it looks so simple. I also constantly obsessed over the dancers’ costumes in All he cares about is love, that beaded lingerie is gorgeous.

Professional Musical Theatre Historian here - you're 100% correct in that SNL is a sort of modern vaudeville. Shows like America's got Talent are also a really strong modern example, as the sheer variety of acts that get involved is very similar to what a Vaudeville bill would've been - a singer or two, some comics, some dancers, an animal act, a magician, etc.

Loved the video! If you like Chicago I would definitely recommend the 1972 classic Cabaret, it's also a Kander and Ebb musical actually directed by Bob Fosse and set in early 30s Berlin. I would, of course, love to see your video on it as well.

Okay this is a random comment, but I’m saying it because I hope Native sees it! Obviously Native is a popular sponsor for KZfaqrs, so I’ve seen and heard a million ads for their product but yours is the first to ACTUALLY make me interested in buying the product. Everyone else I’ve heard has just given the standard spiel, putting emphasis on the aluminum-free aspect, which is not something that’s particularly important to me. But you bringing up the sweat stains on white shirts..... literally my first time hearing about that and as someone who has many white blouses, for the first time I actually plan to give Native a try. Anyway, so happy you got a sponsor. Love your content and, considering Chicago is also one of my favorite movies, love this video!!!
