Ever since I was a child I wanted to become a fire fighter. Just because of helping people and running into a burning building just excites me. Sadly when I got to high school I hung out with the wrong crowd. Long story short I dropped out. As i'm typing this i'm gonna try to get my GED and make my way into the Fire dept to make my long time dream come true.

My Dad was killed in the Line of Duty along with his Engine Company Partner at the infamous Advance Auto Parts Fire in Chesapeake Virginia on March 18, 1996. Became the tipping point for the 2 in 2 out to become a National Standard in the Fire Service. My Dad Frank Young, a veteran firefighter was 38. The other Firefighter John Hudgins was 32. Some don’t make it back to the Firehouse. I still miss Dad very much

very good video a lot of what they talked about,can be applied in other lines of work as well.The biggest one is complacency.I have nothing but respect for firefighters.My ex-father in law died on scene from a heart attack,I was the one who had to tell my young kids that their grandfather had passed. Watching this video started pretty superficial with me paying half attention and then it gradually dug deep inside me and the next thing I realized I couldn't stop watching, I was almost in tears at times and thinking of my own close calls. This is an incredible video and it just popped up in my feed, after 33 years on the job and 27 years being a lieutenant it’s very humbling! The PPE thing is so true, I never wear my hood for personal reasons ( just around my neck)but EVERY ROOKIE SHOULD! If rookies aren’t wearing their hood because it doesn’t look cool etc go to the burn center and look around. I honestly should but again have my personal reasons

This video is the only video that has ever brought tears to my eyes. Im only a teen but i do know alot of people who are firefighters and who puts their life on the line for people who they dont know. They do this because its their passion to help others its what they live for. This video can change everybodys point of view on the men and women who serve as firefighters. In my opinion fire fighters are in my top five of the most bravest people in the world. To all firefighters thank you!!!!!

And no, cities are not shut down. Intersections are blocked off along the parade route. I've seen about 68 of them. I've also met hundreds of firefighters. Most humble, down to earth people Ive ever come in contact with.

Rensselaer Indiana Vol Fire Dept- My dad is the capt. on the RVFD and my Uncle is the Chief of RVFD and our old Chief showed 5 or 6 of our guys this and I'm trying to get on the Dept myself as an Intern and this video really made me think is this really what I want to do. @speedshop. I said I took it back. I was a little reactionary after learning today a very close friend was killed. His eighteen wheeler went down a Colorado mountainside after her suffered a massive heart attack. There is courage, dedication and incredible risk all around...outside fire houses as well as inside. Be safe.

When the guy says 50% off firefighters death are from heart attacks. That is right. We lost one of our dispatchers at our volunteer fire department from a heart attack. REST IN PEACE Donald Paterson. You are missed.

Awesome Video Every paid and vol firefighter in the country needs to watch this and take the advice of these brave men and women. I know how hard it is to have the Chief knock on your door with 2 Highway Patrolman to tell you that your loved one didn't make it to the call.Buckle Up and Be Safe Always

Too often you see firefighters running in the scene, rushing, not being careful, not wearing PPE, not using a seatbelt, not making sure that tools are operated safely. Firefighting is dangerous enough as it is, without hotheads ignoring safety to make it even worse. Firefighters, play safe and do your job with honor! I might be a young firefighter, but the idea of safe operations is hacked deep into my head. I believe we can all work safely when we do our job!

I've seen so many documentaries of the abuse, neglect and outright IGNORANCE of the city officials in Chicago as regards the fire department from lack of funding to equipment in such bad condition it is almost more dangerous than the fires. I am hoping those things have changed now and that the CFD is getting the help and recognition it, and ALL fire departments, deserves.

complacency is a Firefighters worst enemy. My 1st year as a Kentucky firefighter I thought I was hot shit until I got hung up on wires in an attic looking for heat extensions then ran out of air, I've never been so scared in my life because reality hit really quick, I was in serious trouble. thank God for Motorola and my brothers because they came and got me before the heat burnt me up, the rubber to my mask was melted the antenna on my radio was gone. Never think it won't happen to you because it most certainly will.

You have no right to criticise this this video, these are people who have chosen this job, the job of being a firefighter. Pay is not good, retirement of a lifetime firefighter is normaly filled with medical issues and more stress from experiences on the job and lastly the work that firefighters do go to is probably more than you will ever do in your life. These men and women save the lives of others what do you do? You sit behind a computer screen and criticize people 100 times braver than you.

They may not have a high death rate but considers by they are in burning buildings every day and/or on the side of the road pulling injured persons out of vehicles which make it a dangerous job as well but their body has a higher chance of gettin multiple cancers. Which in term is painful and can be deadly. So I salute you fighterfighters out there. God bless you!!

I watched it and it made me ask myself what I can do to commit to what I'm going to do to help make sure that everyone goes home from their shift at my department. I may not be able to fix every problem, but how can you watch this and not think," I have to do something real in my own service."

According to the BLS in 2011, firefighting came it and #7 for most injuries. That includes volunteers, POC, and seasonals. In other words, those who are not paid a salary or permanently employed. You cannot compare them to those with actual occupations. Among career firefighters, the number of injuries ranked #1. The reason there are less deaths is because Advanced Life Support and rescue is always on scene. Average transport time to a hospital is ~25 minutes. With loggers, it is over 2 hours.

Also, when you do the math, all of these numbers add up. Hence the, "Also calculated to be sure." The number of total injuries reported by each occupation, when accounted for number of those serving in them over the past 12-15 years adds up exactly to the numbers each of these agencies reported. Furthermore, firefighters typically tackle a fire from the inside. It iss the most effective way to put out a fire. You will always have FFs on the outside, but over 90% of fires fought are breached.
