I love how people still think that firefighters only fight fires when around 80% to 90% of our job is EMS.
@aaronmichael7116
@aaronmichael7116 5 жыл бұрын
Be VERY careful choosing your words Jeremy. We do NOT consider ourselves EMS. That is NOT our job. We simply ASSIST the EMS Unit, taking instruction from them. They have our utmost respect, and thus we have an excellent relationship, one that if you look around, can't be said for the majority of the departments. Scope of the firefighter at an Emergency Call gets lost in the action, adrenaline takes over, and the next thing you know, a firefighter is elbowing his way onto the bus before a Medic is in the back waiting for the patient ! I know this, I don't want that on my shoulders !! I didn't go to post-secondary school for 3 years to become a Medic. So, medics, I'm here, for the patient. Tell me what you need of me...go get a bag, grab the c-collar, polish the chrome bumper (OK maybe not that last one,lol) It's a delicate relationship, one that works in unison if worked properly, and one that if not followed properly, can be the difference between life and death !!!

ABSOLUTELY!. if the public knew the truth, most fulltime agencies like mine would go volunteer. 18 years of primarily EMS. THAT'S THE TRUTH. 85% EMS (A LOT OF BS HERE TOO!!!), 10 COMPLETE BULLSHIT...5% FIRE.

Brothers you did a very good job at telling the public what it is like to not only be a Paid fireman and how the Environment is like but what is truely like to be a Fireman and what we do. Paid or Volunteer it is has differences and truely the only difference is that they are lucky and get to do what most of us dream of doing. Shout out from Ridgewood Vol. Fire Department in Caryville, TN. 30 Miles north of Knoxville, TN. Very Nice Video

There is a story about the parking deck beside the station that deck was built for the World's Fair they opened up the deck to parking no sprinklers no standpipes had a car fire in it by the time they got hose pulled in to the fire {no trucks would fit in deck] several cars was burnt and damaged one of the car's was the Mayor's car in a couple of days they had every thing they needed to build a truck that would fit in the parking deck

uh...he's telling the blunt truth to be honest..would you rather he flat out lie to your face? I mean..yes you can/will be a hero..but about 90% of that will not be the case..you will literally be on your hands and knee's sweating your ass off in gear that keeps heat as well as out crawling down a hallway where I shit you not...you won't be able to see your face 3 feet in front of your face at times. However...firefighting has its own rewards...the relief of you pulling someone who's been in a car wreck out of their car and passing them off to medical or even pulling some poor bloke or lass out of a burning house...yes you will lose people and sometimes your buddies will be one of them...but you do it because like me...you don't want to see the world burn any more then it already has.

@@ayo_moreno Not all jurisdictions have the tax base, to be able to afford a fully paid fire department, the way a metro area like Knoxville, or New York or some other city does. The solution that's been around since Ben Franklin walked the earth, is the volunteer fire department... a department made up of local citizens who, in time of trouble, will respond to the fire station from home or work, gear out, get on the trucks and respond to any emergency. The training is the same... the risks are the same... the level of professionalism is the same... The ONLY major difference, is the paycheck. I started on the paid side... and now am a chief officer, leading a fantastic group of volunteers. The difference they make in the lives of our citizens, is amazing. Many paid firefighters start in the volunteer fire service, to get training and experience, and to network with other departments, both paid and volunteer. Go ahead and sign up and learn and make a difference! You won't regret it!

I see a lot of people complaining about the "editing", so seeing as this is my home city I thought I'd inform you all. First and foremost, station 1 is located downtown so their primary response zone is downtown Knoxville and the University of Tennessee campus (except Rescue 1 - which responds across the county). Being located in the heart of Big Orange Country station 1 responds to a lot of false fire alarms and drunk college students, as one would expect. Of course, like any fire station they have their busy days and slow days, these days usually coincide with the arrival or departure of college students. If this documentary was filmed during a slow day, or day(s) than it's easy to understand and see why the same unit is used more than once.

It's gotta be disheartening when you hear a call that says there are victims trapped in a burning building. Most people would run from a burning building, but, you guys are brave and run towards them, even if it means that you might not make it back out. Last Easter, one of my old neighbors had been preparing their garage for a friend of theirs who needed a home. Well, they stupidly replaced the firewall in the garage with drywall and left a whole bunch of spray paint cans directly in front of their furnace. Unfortunately, the unthinkable happened. In the middle of the night, my family friend, who was watching my dogs while my family was out of town, said my dogs alerted to something in the middle of the night, and they wouldn't stop barking, so he went to see what they were going on about, and that was when he saw smoke coming from my neighbor's garage. He ran over there to see if anyone was home, alerted their nextdoor neighbor, and called 911. Thankfully, no one was home because, shortly after the fire department arrived, all the spray paint cans exploded, completely destroying the house. I truly don't know what we would do without firefighters to save us from horrible accidents like this. Thank you for your service.

I dont care how much downtime they have. Their next call could be the last one with the guy they're laughing with. They don't get paid enough. The city should be paying for their food. They're on duty and providing a needed service for the city's residents. They spend a lot of time from their families. It's the least they could do.
@usethetools
@usethetools 7 жыл бұрын
a lot of free time??? not the greatest pay so on their off days after working 24 on and then off for 48 they do part time work...maybe they watch their children while their wives work... who the hell wants that... It would be nice to have a better paying full-time job but they can't... They arrive in the morning to the change of shifts get a report, if they don't get a call, check their trucks clean the building , maybe there is training then calls may happen, someone has to go buy their food after they all chip in their "meal money" for the 24 hr shift). They may have paperwork to study and submit, lunchtime if they don't have a call ... sometimes they don't get lunch till afternoon... there are specific days where the refrigerator is cleaned out, the floors are moped... hazmat calls, medical calls, fires, accidents... fill the boot... maybe get in a nap in case they don't get any sleep during the night. A couple of the guys prepare dinner and cook, everyone (maybe) eats, they shoot the bull for a little bit then get up wash their own dish, silverware rinse, dry and put em away. by now who knows what time it is so maybe they go study or watch a little TV or go take a shower and hit the hay... then during the night if there are no calls... great, they get to sleep if not... who knows they could be up all night... in the rain, the hot humid weather, snow, ice, storms...maybe they go on a call and have to deliver a baby, ... How many nights do they not sleep in their own beds then to make a little extra money they have side jobs... some folks can hold down 2 mostly full time jobs not Firefighters... They are also kind hearted men ... there are some female firefighters as well who sleep in their own quarters. When they return from a fire they stink of smoke and are stained with soot ... they have to shower to get the toxic crap off em... We love our firefighters. Some Fire Departments also operate the ambulance service... It most certainly isn't an office job but they love their work which is a must or you probably won't stay there long.

I am very interested in becoming a firefighter, but the very high percentage of cancer in the profession scares me.
@skymedic48
@skymedic48 8 жыл бұрын
The percentage is much lower than one would think. Back in the day, it was normal to not to wear your scba and mask, now, it's almost required on any fire. Also, most depts. now have a smoking policy...like where I live, in Austin, NO SMOKING while on shift...and, they guys are required to work out. That greatly cuts down on the cancer, but also, obesity. If you want to be a firefighter, wear your damn mask when you are at fire, your lungs will thank you....most importantly, so will your family.
@christait1719
@christait1719 7 жыл бұрын
As Firemedic said, the rates are much lower now. Being vigilant and cleaning your gear is another way to lessen the risk of cancer. In years gone by it was almost seen as a badge of honour to have dirty gear... you've been in fires. The problem is that every time you put on that sooty bunker gear, soiled helmet, dirty gloves you are putting the cancer causing materials back against your skin or breathing it in. Be smart and try to lessen your exposure to these elements and you will be fine. As a volunteer we are not allowed to carry our gear in our vehicles unless it is in a bag in the trunk. This lessens the exposure to you and your family.
@gooddaymate1171
@gooddaymate1171 5 жыл бұрын
@@christait1719 you can lessen the exposure, but the risk of cancer is currently at 80% for firefighters. The city even raised the cancer coverage for firefighters. Why would they raise the coverage if firefighters were getting less cancer? Because they know the risk is still high or getting worse. You can clean your gear all you want. but before you clean it, all the cancer causing particles is being breathed in.

With the exception of the kid that looks like the paperboy, but has a KFD uniform on, the rest of the ff's are out of shape !! If you're on the back of the rig, you're doing the work ! If you're an officer, you may be doing the work, depending on the nature of the call, manpower, and other calls @ the same time. So, I expect to see fit ff's. I see out of shape ff's, talking about being a professional cook. I had an Assistant Chief that retired from a major dept to join ours, which consists of 5 stations, and a vast area of coverage. Contents both rural and urban. Running thru it, a major freeway, speed limit of 100 kms/hr, although 120 is the norm. No barrier dividing the east from the west traffic, so you can imagine the MVA's when we have traffic crossing over to head on. He attended a structure fire I was working at 3am dressed in his dept t-shirt, pajama bottoms, and slippers. A giggle by me, but off to work we went. He was amazing ! He just retired from a major dept and decided to join ours in order to help with his son's university tuition. our gain. he couldn't do up the button on his dress shirt that was the farthest out, the one on his belly button ;-) and in the bay one day, I watched him light a cigarette off of the one he had lit in his mouth. he died a short time ago. sadly. our chief, is the total opposite. prior to becoming chief, he was a supervisor for union gas company. one sunny day, within a second, he lost 3 employees to an explosion. no longer able to work in that environment, he decides to apply for the chief;s position, and he's hired. wrong decision in my opinion. he's so afraid, his middle name is safety ! he'll be ordering us to fight a fire in a BFI garbage bin from across the street in no time !! he's dangerous by being too safe !

"They have a lot of free time so when they are not working they have second careers"Yeah that's why we have second careers!! How about the fact that some of us haven't had a raise in years when the cost of living is increasing, insurance costs go up and the cost of have families. BUT when you LOVE your career and the people you help you stay and find second jobs. All of the citizens life we touch daily gives us a true gratification and purpose. We as a whole will do everything in our power to save lives to include risking our own. What the public may not realize is we tell our loved ones we love them in the morning when we walk out the door with them understanding this may be the last time they ever see us alive.

Idk how old u are, u may be older then me but let me say something, I'm 14 since I was... Hell since I could talk I have loved firefighters, police, emt, all that and the second I hit 14 I joined a local volunteer fairest stun it's been about a year and so far it has been the best times of my life. Even after a year the guys become like family it's fun and you learn so much and in the process help people. If your old enough I would recommend joining s volunteer station if ur under 18 it will help u during fire school because of how much you will learn. If you want to be a career firefighter when your old enough you won't regret it.

24 hour shifts? we got 12hr shifts over here 5 six days on and a few days off never knew why it did take an ambulance ont he road longer to get there than a whole team + truck at the station quicker..
@Skygee0829
@Skygee0829 9 жыл бұрын
+SaucySoviet Because medical calls are more frequent than MVA's and Fires combined. So if you have an engine company just sitting at the station while an ambulance crew is running all over the territory, you might as well put the citizens money to good use and get the engine company out there to help those in need. Some assistance is better than no assistance.
@aidandeslippe988
@aidandeslippe988 8 жыл бұрын
+BoscoVapes on top of Skygee 0829's comment, ambulances are also fewer in numbers that fire crews and cover a wider area, therefore it may take them longer to get to one side of their territory to the other that a truck company, and those 2 minutes really count for someone in cardiac arrest or breathing difficulties. The medical service in the FD saves lives.

it means we can not justify the ENORMOUS costs as an ever increasing fire dept. for all practices, firemen are as obsolete. the dept could be run with fewer stations, fewer men and an on call team that work a regular job or self employed, whatever and they are are paged to a fire. not sent to every 911 call, just to reported fires. the full time firemen could be managed and employed by a private company paying less wages and no retirement. government employees have retained their large retirements while private businesses have phased their retirements out. we all have to face the reality that things cannot continue this way. our government is broke. cuts have to be made.

Pat Studer There are millions and millions of houses in America that are older than 1960's, and don't have sprinkler systems. So what your saying is that just because new construction has these features and are more fire safe, that anyone who has an older building should have to suffer because their building isn't outfitted? And by the way Pat, there are private companies that provide firefighters, and they usually actually make more money than a city department would. So before you start stating information, do some research and think outside the box.

shane forzano It depends where you live. I live in SoCal so getting into the fire service was quite competitive. Getting your EMT is key as well as working as an EMT. Try to get into an explorer/cadet program with a local department. Another piece of advice, apply now, don't wait till you "get everything". You could just miss out on the opportunity of a lifetime.

Well Chris, Chief Of Training, Knoxville Fire.....perhaps on the first day of recruit training, you can start with the statement : "Do NOT get as fat as I." Yes, that was straight up. But it is true. Appearance is everything. Professionalism. Safety. All of that, includes physical fitness. I'm not even going to apologize, so if I were to get partnered with Chris @ a structure fire, I'm sorry, but I'm pulling the chute, safely !! Emergency bypass knob. Equipment malfunction. Whatever I need to do, to save my own ass. We need to drive it home, hard, that no matter your position, or years of experience, you have to show professionalism. Example : structure fire, I was partnered up with a female firefighter from another company, district chief orders us to the 2nd floor, toss the couch out the window. Up we go, I lean my end up on the window sill, she can't lift hers. I go around and push the couch from her end out the window. Upon exiting, my co-workers are giggling, asking me how I liked working with her. Apparently, she failed the academy 3 times before they pushed her thru, because a family member was a white shirt ! Well, I don't care what she was, that could have been my life. This isn't a game. It's life and death. Nevermind me, what if it turned out to be a civilian rescue, and we needed to exit the structure by carrying him/her ? I know this will ruffle some feathers, but I believe a female should have a physical fitness test designed for their gender only. Now, before you go off on me, remember, some cities do have a physical fitness test for females that is EASIER than that for the male, although fortunately it's going the way of the do-do bird !! Another example, and this one will blow your minds ! The police service in my city, population of 320,000, so a fairly large city, wanted to hire more females. So, a few weeks before the physical portion of the testing, the police dept puts an ad in the local newspaper. It states any females interested in applying can take a pre-test for the physical at the location they hold the physical at. It will walk the females thru the test, seeing which part is hard for them, so they can better prepare for the day of. Now, I challenge anyone, both sexes, to justify that !! Complete bullshit !!
