How is it Richard Gere didn't win an Oscar for this performance?
@jonathanbowers8964
@jonathanbowers8964 4 ай бұрын
Probably because the people voting on the awards were heavily biased against musicals and at that time were extremely obsessed with Holocaust narratives. Not to say that Holocaust stories aren't important media, but that they were a golden ticket to Oscar success for about a 30 year period (of which this film was in the peak of that era).

He wasn’t even nominated for this performance. It would have been great if he was…then all 4 acting categories would have nominations for Chicago Renee Zellweger:Best Actress Catherine Zeta-Jones:Best Supporting Actress (won) Queen Latifah: Best Supporting Actress John C Reilly: Best Supporting Actor

@@jonathanbowers8964 no idea where you're getting that from. Chicago won best picture and Zeta-Jones won best supporting actress that year. Hardly sounds like bias against musicals.

He was testing her poor eyesight ("How many fingers am I holding up?") to discredit her as an eyewitness. @@user-rh2io7gm1l Huh, that explains it quite well. That confused me for the longest time. And rewatching it now, I noticed at least one of the showgirls (maybe more of them?) is holding up a different number of fingers than Billy and everyone else (holding up 2 when the rest are holding up 3). Wonder if that was intentional (to show how the witness is being screwed with), or if that one showgirl kinda whiffed it?
@retroguy9494
@retroguy9494 4 күн бұрын
Yes, that 'finger' test is one of the oldest lawyer tricks in the book. Eyewitness testimony has been proven to be very unreliable compared to physical evidence and sadly, many innocent people have been convicted based on unreliable witness testimony. The job of the lawyer is to try and discredit witness testimony.

She really was. I feel bad for Amos more than almost anyone else in the movie. He was willing to do everything for her, lie for her, and what was his reward? Being treated like a chump and an inconvenience so she could be a star. She cheats on her husband for fun and because she wasn't living the life she wanted. Tries to badly lie to get away with killing a dude who was just a lying sack of shit but not much else. And not only gets away with murder but teams up to work with someone else just so they can use their murder cases to get into the limelight and perform

Richard Gere not being at the very least nominated for an Oscar for this is one of biggest snubs ever.
@user-lz5ud4ge2n

Especially considering that his co-stars were all nominated: *Renée Zellweger* (Best Actress), *Catherine Zeta-Jones* (Supporting Actress), *Queen Latifah* (Supporting Actress), *John C. Reilly* (Supporting Actor). In total, *_Chicago_* (2002) received 13 *Oscar* nominations, including *Best Picture* and *Best Director.* Therefore, *Richard Gere* was totally snubbed! Furthermore, *Jerry Orbach* who played *'Billy Flynn'* in the original 1975 *Broadway* production was nominated for a *Tony,* as was *James Naughton* in the 1996 revival. Across the pond, *Ben Cross* was nominated for an *Olivier* for the 1979 *London* production, as was *Henry Goodman* in the 1997 revival.

Trump would be a case of life imitating art. The big bamboozlea and the old flim flam flummox. Who, in their right mind, would ever think that an ex president would be found guilty of an election interference felony simply because he gifted his ex lover money to not disclose their affair when he was still a private citizen to the public? It's just plain insanity!
