May 16, 2021 - A ride along the 2.7 mile (4.3 km) 606 elevated trail. The 606, also known as the Bloomingdale Trail, runs east/west through multiple neighborhoods on Chicago's northwest side. It serves as an important thoroughfare for cycling, walking, and running both for transportation and recreation. Even though it can get quite crowded when the weather is nice, the trail is one of my favorite places to ride and, in my opinion, is one of the best examples of cycling infrastructure in the city. While face coverings are still technically required on the trail due to COVID-19, it seemed most Chicagoans had taken the recent CDC guidelines (that fully vaccinated individuals do not need face coverings outdoors) to heart and doffed their masks. With nearly 48% of Chicagoans having received at least one vaccine dose, this was the first time for me in over a year that things felt somewhat normal again.

Nice. We need more infrastructure like this. This one reminds me of videos from the Netherlands and Denmark.

What a great trail. You're lucky to have such a gem, especially if it's within biking distance of your home. I was able to bike part of the Longleaf Trace near Hattiesburg, MS yesterday, and though I thoroughly enjoyed the time on the trail, I don't like the idea I have to drive by car to get to it from New Orleans.

Fortunately this trail is only 5.5 miles from my home and the route there consists almost entirely of quiet residential streets and protected bike lanes. I agree, there is something special about actually being able to cycle all the way to your destination.

Been on the 606 a number of times as a pedestrian. But I gotta say...I doubt I'll ever ride it. All the people and kids and dogs. Just watching this was making me anxious. But it is a great trail overall.

I can understand that, it definitely can get pretty crowded. I think it's usually pretty manageable on a bike if you take it slow. Just don't expect to set any speed records.

Love riding this trail as a small part of biking around the city. Its pretty short for biking overall. If it could be extended from the lakefront to Oak Park that would great. 😀 I usually go pretty slow along the trail to make it last and not stress the pedestrians when passing and there are a lot of children and pets.

such a great trail. i walked the entirety of it while in Chicago a few months back. In Atlanta, we have the belt line trail which is like the 606 flipped on its head and injected with steroids. when it’s all complete it will be a 22 mile completely paved loop around the city centered around housing, entertainment and restaurants.

@@tuvideoloco6551 there are sections of the beltline that’s already complete . the main section which is on the east side is complete. that’s about a 2 mile paved section with restaurants and green spaces. a lot of the beltline is unpavedbut you can still travel through it. there’s a section of the west side which is complete with a coupe of breweries.

It looks like a nightmare for biking which is what they constructed it for, unfortunately. Too narrow. Not enough signage to remind people that it is intended to be for biking and they need to keep aware of their surroundings if they want to bring dogs and wagons

It's a really cool trail, but way too crowded. There's not enough room for two pedestrians to walk side-by-side so one is always walking in the bike lane. It's a bad design, they needed to make the pedestrian lane twice as wide.

They should connect those buildings on the side. Have little bridges and maybe patios all along it so people can have a pedestrian street connected right to their buildings and businesses. Imagine running a little cafe with a little seated patio area that connects to that path. You'd get hella walk-ins all day long.
@BiologyIsHot
@BiologyIsHot Жыл бұрын
Yeah this would just create a safety issue. Have you ever tried biking somewhere that attracts casual pedestrian activity? Here at least there is nowhere really for people to go but walk down the path. If you add what you are describing you will get a monstrosity like the old bike path by navy Pier. The number of friends I knew who got injured commuting because some tourist decided to randomly run across the path without warning was insane. This path is already dangerous enough for biking with how overcrowded it is with large groups of people walking, dogs, etc. Notice how most of the runners understand that you're supposed to stick to the outer blue edge but none of the walkers do? Now add some family with children grabbing ice cream.

@BiologyIsHot
@BiologyIsHot Жыл бұрын
It looks almost as bad as the bike path was when passing by navy Pier until they built the flyover. If you bike here you're just asking to get injured eventually from somebody's carelessness with their dog or wagon or whatever. It's a shame since it was built with money that was intended to help with bike/transit accessibility. But Chicago has always been a complete farce when it comes to being bikeable. I tried it once years ago and while it's improved in a few very narrow scopes, it remains utterly nightmarish. I knew a guy who used to commute by bike every day. He retired and shortly after he was paralyzed by an accident that would have been avoidable if they didn't build these monstrosities and call them biking ammenities.
