My grandma lived off Sibley Blvd. in Harvey! I loved that old house. Dad worked at the Sinclair/ARCO refinery up the street. Good times. Riverdale was nice a long time ago. The train conductor on the IC would go: RRRRRRRiverdaaaale.

Family lives in the area and it’s been bad for a while. When we’d visit we were always told to never go out there at night. I heard when they tore down the pjs a lot of people ended up moving out that way.

Grew up riding my bike around Riverdale and Dolton in the 1970s, it was safe and clean and vibrant and there were kids everywhere and things to do. It was an amazing childhood, and so sad to see it now. I cannot even drive down my old street, it is too dangerous. Hard to believe. Thanks for posting this.

@@RR-bb2lkin these cases manufacturing jobs left to go overseas. Nothing replaced them. Housing values went down. Middle class people left to find decent work. Poor people moved in, along with the problems that come with poverty. Mainly drugs and violence. Housing values decline further. In the suburbs people don't really live in the projects. It's mainly Section 8, a private landlord or sometimes people do own their home.

Jesus this one sure hits. That could be any older late 60's early 70's townhouse or semi development in my town in Canada. We're lucky that we still have jobs here, but one sure refuses to believe it could, and of how quickly things can fall into decay. Keep up the good work CB.

I remember when Ford Heights was East Chicago Heights. A bunch of Mafia lived there in a section called "da Hill". Safest neighborhood in the country I bet.

When I was going for a day trip to Indiana back in 2022, and heading back into illinoi, ( didn’t get back until late at night ) and was lost.. that’s when I made a big mistake and accidentally took the wrong road and ended up in one of the worst neighborhoods at night. Since I knew what route 83 was in my mind at the time I was like yeah I know that it would get me home, during that time I wasn’t aware about it either until after the fact. some parts that I did accidentally ended up driving through were okay while other areas were sketchy and it could have had ended badly.. thankfully nothing happened and I did make it back safely but it could have been so much worse considering that it was nighttime, definitely don’t wanna be out there during the night.

He’s just driving through one neighborhood in Riverdale. It’s called Pacesetter. Pacesetter was the lower income area of Riverdale since the 80s.

IIRC Harvey was where crack cocaine made its entrance to Chicagoland in the late ‘80s. The outfit in the city was terrified of this crazy new addictive drug and kept it out of the city, away from their heroin trade.

Years ago, my family’s best friends lived in Riverdale. We would take the bus or streetcar from Roseland to visit them many times. After I moved to Park Forest, I was a member of the Harvey YMCA. I now live in Green Bay, Wisconsin and it is starting to experience the same deterioration.

After my family sold our big house on the South Side of Chicago in the late 80’s, most of us moved to apartments in Harvey and Riverdale. I lived a block from Thornton High School, then later on 153rd and Winchester. It’s a lot worse now than what it was.

I cant believe in 2024 people are living like this. Why don't they fix their houses? Is poverty that bad in IL? Sheesh this looks like the Bronx of the 70's and 80's. My state would of put liens on those homes and auctioned it off to people that would rehab then back to new. There is zero places in the city of Boston that even comes closes to that. Our projects look better than that. Then again our projects are actual all homes now, resembling a subdivision. I'm glad I was put on earth in the State and city I currently live in. I cant remember a year when we had more than 40 murders.

Yup big poverty south of Chicago. All the factories, steel mills and refineries moved out long ago. Not many places to work that pay well anymore. People don't live in projects in the suburbs.

@@kendalson7100 What the hell is the minimum wage? In Massachusetts it’s $15 with talk to move it to $20 in a few years. You don’t need a degree to get some State Jobs that pay well as long as you can do the job. No drug testing and most job don’t do background checks. These are all things used to keep people poor.

@@kasarnflaminimum in Illinois is $14 per hour. Again, there are few places to work in Harvey and Riverdale anymore. You'd need to buy a car and drive somewhere. Public transport out there sucks. Working fast food/gas station/liquor stores you won't get a 40 hour week. To get a state/city/county job you can't just apply. You need connections through a friend or a politician.

@@kendalson7100 Sounds like Florida. Places you can’t live unless you have a car and a backup car because public transportation is non existent. Boston has one of the best public transportation systems in the country. Most of the buses in the hood are free because our governor and mayor recognize people are just making it, so they use federal funds to have the buses free. Eventually they want all public transit free. These Republicans demonize blue states because our states do it better. Massachusetts has the highest average median salary of all 50 states. You can work at a holt and make $28.88 starting with a 2 dollar raise every year. You have to be on drugs to not make it in this state. If you make less than $80k a year. The state will pay your down payment on a home if you’re a first time home buyer. This is the stuff Foxnews won’t tell you. Our Police officers after 5 years and overtime make over $200k and some $400k a year. It’s easy to make money here.

That's pretty cool, but I bet you have high taxes. Illinois has high taxes too, but you don't get a lot in return. Cook County, where these suburbs and Chicago is, has lots of political corruption. The Democrats control everything through machine politics. And what isn't controlled by them is Mafia. The 2 go hand-in-hand often. It's a different world there.

There is no beauty to American streets, the houses are so square and flat and the roads are lifeless and grey. Everything seems so dull somehow. You could say the same thing for England but England retains some of its old medieval architecture which is interesting, no surprise for a European country.

Do you have Miami somewhere? I was a kid there in 76 and it was nice and then all hell broke loose with the cocaine cartel and the flood of unsavory people released by Fidel from insane asylum and prison. The year I decided to leave, we had nine tourists murdered and in front of their children from Ohio or something. I was every night with car alarms,crack,guns ,broken windshields ,etc.this was 89.I left .I know they changed rental plates and signs. 😅 It's not, or wasn't the glitz and glam of television. Liberty City?Sargeant Lozano?ring of thirty bad cops?Counterfeit?Well, let's hope it has improved. I did love my Florida and my birth place😅

It's called disinvestment from systemic housing discrimination and redlining. The whites in charge of the housing market made a fortune from forcing blacks into inner city areas then cutting them off from jobs and resources. Martin Luther King even tried to protest in Chicago for better housing opportunities for blacks, and the whites there had a harsher reaction towards King than King faced in the South.
