Chicago's Fire Department got some of the best looking and lit up rigs of any fire department anywhere in the world... and the best attention getting air horns and sirens. Some of the best fire fighters too! I'm just a little biased having lived in Chicago area my whole life. Why the unique green light on the right side? Goes back to Fire Commissioner Albert Goodrich (1927 - 1931) who had a nautical background serving in the merchant marines. The black roofs goes back to the same era. After ordering several "chief" cars that had black cloth roofs, looked pretty good, so over time all new rigs got roofs pained black.

Also a past Chicago Fire Commissioner, forget which one invented the fire pole that used to be slid down to get to their rigs faster. Fire Commissioner Quinn in 1958 invented a strange looking contraption that had a platform at the top of a ladder truck that bent on a joint near the middle like an elbow along with plumbing to bring high pressure water to the platform. It was quickly dubbed Quinn's snorkel and fire departments all over the world quickly followed suit. Quinn also was the one that ordered Chicago's air raid sirens to be set off city wide in the middle of the night for a solid five minutes... to celebrate the long suffering Chicago While Sox baseball team winning the American league championship in 1959. This scared the crap out of tens of thousands because it was at a time when Premier Nikita Khrushchev's of the old Soviet Union threatened to "bury you". So many thought the city was under pending attack.

Nah it took that eq2b cycle mixed with that horn to them to move
