Chicken coop cleaning and garden update

Full cleaning of the chicken coop and a look at the garden so far.
Cleaning the coop today is more of a proactive attempt to ward off mites, lice and ticks. This also gives me an opportunity to check all the nooks and crannies for these unwelcome visitors.
After all the pine shavings are removed and coop thoroughly checked I resupply with the following:
Mana Pro Poultry Protector, spray ticks, lice, mites
Sweet PDZ, odor control
Diatomaceous Earth, food grade, ticks, lice, mites
heat treated pine shavings

I love your gentle humility and that you didn't disturb your laying hen for this video. I also love that you share so much of your learning from last year with plans for next year (know I a couple of years late, hope to find up-dates). Wish I'd been as sure of my direction at your age! I'm a bit older now and find that growing some food, having some chickens and compost is a constant, enjoyable learning curve (oldie fan from the south coast of the U.K.) Please wear a mask when using that wonderous diatomacious earth! x

Nice! I am in the beginning stages of building my food forest too. I grew a variety of herbs this year, dehydrated them, then vacuum sealed them into small mason jars using my Food Saver Vacuum sealer. Dehydrated foods, sealed in this way will last for untold years if kept in a cool, dark place. Herbs dry quick and easy too. I also grew strawberries (and diced them, then dehydrated them) and raspberries. I turned most into jam just to preserve them. They can also be dehydrated and stored, or turned into powder for mixing into other food stuff. You will figure it all out--as I am! Looks great! You obviously plan before doing.

Cindy Majors THAT IS SO COOOL! I am trying different things and some work some don’t. My strawberries were a huge let down but some of my other plants went crazy this year. I built a greenhouse and am hoping to grow spinach, lettuce and other greens into February. Dehydrating is such a great way to preserve stuff! I really want to try that. I did get a food saver and a bunch of canning supplies. I want to make my own pasta sauces to hold onto. You totally have the right idea. Food forests are awesome! Good luck!!

Crazyboxhead lol! They watch me sometimes when I'm collecting eggs and I wonder if they are planning something devious to get me back for taking them haha!

I currently reside in the Pacific Northwest on the coast.. The growing season is normally short. I have experimented with a few things.. A couple of things I do recommend for high yield is straight 8 cucumbers , and black forrest cherry tomatoes... just a thought... the thing I love about growing your own vegies is , its fun .and it all tastes better than shop bought ... keep it up.. and keep your own seeds... i like to have worms in my compost it helps it to break down.. i would not let chickens in my compost ...

I'm surprised you're not wearing a mask with the cleaning (dust) and the DE spreading. Both are very hazardous to your lungs.

We used a stain by Olympia called redwood no 7 I believe. Hope that helps, cheers

How often do you do this deep clean?

We do a basic clean like a litter box pretty much every day and I do a deep clean about 4 times a year. Pretty much at the beginning of each season all of the bedding is removed and the coop gets a thorough cleaning and inspection for any kinds of little critters in the nooks and crannies. I white wash the inside every spring during that clean out and that is the most thorough cleaning for the whole year.
