The ducks only go in the coop to lay eggs and if it is very very cold. Otherwise they stay outside.

I was going to build a coop. After looking at your design I think I'm going to purchase a small shed instead. What size shed is yours? Also do you get snow were your at? If so how do you keep your chickens warm in the winter and how is there egg producing in the winter months with no windows?

@@curtisworthington2241 it is 10x12I think. Yes I get snow here. Chickens do fine in the winter without any heat, as long as they can get dry and draft free. Chickens are raised clear up in Alaska and do fine. If you are worried, there are breeds that more cold resistant such as brahmas. Egg production ground to a halt in the winter. You could put a light in the coop to help with that. My door is open 24-7 so as soon as it is light out, they go outside so windows would make much of a difference.

I live in central Ohio, winter temps can be down into the single digits here in the winter (F). Because I have ducks, they do not go into the coop at night unless it is really cold. So if i had an automatic door they would still be vulnerable. My pond has frozen over the top once during a polar vortex but my water never stopped flowing. I have the charge controller for the solar panel but i do not have an inverter. I have a electric fence charger that runs off DC and my light is a yard light I modified that also runs off DC. No heat, chickens do not need heat in their coops as long as they are dry and draft free. They are amazingly hardy animals.

They only need heat until they feather , if you have harsh winter's make sure you have plenty of clean dry straw and keep them in on super nasty days. A window is a great addition for sunlight to help warm it up other then that I brood chicks in my 3 season room lol and during bad Michigan winter's I built my coop close enough to the garage to run an electric cord to plug the heat lamp. Birds have been known to roost and the legs freez when you come in to feed in the Am you will have legless birds fluttering on the floor .... That is not a joke !! They rely on you to live so good luck and research as much as you can it helps.

My ducks do not go in at night like chickens do. My ducks would still be vulnerable. That is why I made it more important to secure the run, not the coop.
