I remember going to see Chicken Little at the cinema with a friend and her mum when I was a kid. We were more excited about the fact that NO ONE ELSE WAS IN THE CINEMA so two sugared up kids had the run about of an entire screening room and the only person to actually watch the film was my friends mum. Chicken Little is a beloved movie in my household and I actually paid attention watching it as a kid

You know, the life of Chicken Little sounds like the perfect setup for a villain backstory. A child literally being ridiculed and beaten down by everyone around him, and has a worthless father that never supports him. This was more than enough for Chicken Little to harbor hatred for the world. With his new found knowledge of the aliens, he then gets a hunger for retribution by taking advantage of Kirby being lost. As the invasion begins, Chicken Little looks back at all the torment that happened to him in the past, but he doesn't feel any pity for the people, especially his father. Instead, he seethes with pure joy and satisfaction, watching as the world burns. If the writers stuck with that plot, the movie would have been a whole lot better!

It’s really funny how they think that they can spend the majority of their time outside of the house and expect a child to just acknowledge that they are paying for the power and the groceries and every little thing without the context of a larger world to understand that. With them hardly ever talking to you hardly ever acknowledging your existence only really coming to speak to you if there’s a problem. They never teach you anything they never comfort you they never give you any wisdom when you’re stressed. But because they paid the power bill we’re supposed to just understand their “unconditional” love.

I'm sorry that you've dealt with a crappy self-absorbed and unaware father. I hope that now and long into the future, you'll have people genuinely care, love, support, and accept you as you are. If not now, then I hope you'll learn that it's alright to believe in yourself and be your own support system in the meantime. The wrong people will never bother to recognize how amazing you are, how much you've improved, and/or properly show support as their heads are shoved so far up their butts. So I hope that you're not seeking your father's praise and support because based on your comment, he should not be needed or wanted. Like who the hell would take criticism from the same person you certainly wouldn't go to for advice? And who wants support from a guy that's doing nothing? I hope you're doing much better now and that you know you don't need him.

I believe this is one of the earliest modern forms of writers attempting to make their character as sympathetic as possible by making the people around them as comedically cruel as possible. Also, I am glad you pointed out what happened to Foxy, because if you weren't, I was. She was essentially lobotomized. Her fate is pretty horrific. Unironically (much like writers that do this nowadays) they gave the bully a punishment far worse than anything their "sympathetic" character goes through.

What gets me is that if you changed the character dynamic of the two of them you could have a way better movie. Like, imagine if he was an actual supportive dad who believed in his son and defended him from everyone. He could have a history of being similarly not believed or cared for by the townfolk as a child over something else (which they try to gaslight him into believing never happened) and be wanting to defend and uplift his own son in a way he never had. Maybe the end of his arc would even encompass that somehow.

So there’s a very good chance that Buck *agreed* to let them make all this merchandise mocking his son and is probably getting royalties from it. I can't believe I forgot Disney made a movie with mind break on it. Literal mind break like it's seen in those offbrand manga, and the resemblance is uncanny with it involving a strong willed (albeit bitchy) girl having her mind altered into the harmless defenseless victim of some overweight tall guy who seemingly wants to make her his girlfriend. I never thought anything about it when I saw this movie as a child, but as an adult, it's disturbing as fuck, probably the most cursed thing Disney has ever done. I guess I have to at least give the writers some credit for being so innocent if they didn't realized how disturbing those implications were.

The crazy thing about it is that the father could've gotten rid of his son, but he never did because maybe for reputation or for the father's own pride. What I mean is he wants his son to be popular, rich, famous, talented, ect. He never allowed his son to do anything he wants to do, or the father would think he will suck at that subject. My logic here is he just wants to use chicken little. Plus, the sequel to this is he is strong and popular and that tarnish his whole personally. Poor kid.

And then having possibly my first big self-reflection moment at realizing I hated him *because he reminded me of myself.* That sigh his dad gives when he just starts TALKING? Just talking, like anyone does? Story of my life. Don't embarrass me? Bro, that might as well have been my parents' motto! Does one good thing and gets bragged about because he's now EARNED basic parental affection? Dude... I'd always blamed myself, so I also blamed him. I've noticed that they seem to treat CL's being undersized like a disability, both in and out of universe. In universe, the issue of him being as small as he is seems like it's always being tiptoed around, like "as long as we don't outright make fun of him being a shrimp, we can hold our heads high while still ridiculing him because at least we're not ablest". Buck is a former star athlete of his school days who wanted his son to be a big, burly jock like him, and is openly ashamed of having an imperfect child who apparently can't do sports. Out of universe, it's used in joke after joke until CL needs to be cool, at which point the smallness becomes a plus when he improvises, which feels suspiciously like an autistic child who is a prodigy at the piano or a talented artist as a 'silver lining' to their condition. I might be reading too deep into it, but it's just a thought that makes the town's attitude even worse.

When I was a kid I was OBSESSED with Chicken Little. Like, intensely hyper fixated on it for a good several months which felt like forever to a 6 year old. I owned like all the cereal box bobbleheads they made of the characters, a book, and the GBA game. I honestly cannot see why I was so obsessed with it, I think it was just one of those random things I decided was going to be my life for the next 6 months to a year along with Happy Feet and Xiaolin Showdown. I definitely was well aware of how shitty Chicken Little was being treated in the movie and idk maybe that was why I liked it (I was bullied a lot so maybe I related to him???) but rewatching it as an adult, I fully realized how almost unwatchable and cringe inducing it is. I just can't watch the "CL being bullied by the entire town" scenes anymore without wanting to rip my hair and teeth and internal organs out.

Amazing song aside, Buck was obviously already driving him far enough away from their house, so why couldn't he just drop him off right at the school instead? I will never let my child (if I ever have any lol) watch this film. It’s literally about an entire town bullying one character. The only message I got, even when I first saw this film in theatres, is you’re only worth what others perceive, just to feed their own egos. I especially think the father of the main character is really despicable on how he acts, allowing the whole town to treat his kid like shit while neglecting him, too. He cares more about how’s self image than his own child’s well-being. I mean, I know it’s only a cartoon movie, but this was real life, I wouldn’t let anyone - whether be one person , a group of people or a whole community - push my kid around.

Chicken Little is like a very bad version of Shrek. Dreamworks was founded by ex-Disney creatives with Shrek basically being an "Anti-Disney" movie. Disney comes around 4 years later trying to recreate the same idea with Chicken Little, and end up making a joke of themselves for acting ironically self-aware. Even the opening title is them just trying to copy-paste the opening sequence of Shrek with the psuedo fairy-tale opener.

What gets me about the Dad's "redemption" arc in this film is that he goes from being blindly dismissive of his son to blindly supportive. I mean, his kid is literally throwing himself into harm's way, and the father leaps from one extreme of utter neglect to the other. It's like the filmmakers weren't aware that actual attentive parenting is more than just cheering on your kid while he almost kills himself.

Despite how much people dump on this movie, it did strike something of a chord for me as a kid. Belive it or not, people like the protagonist actually exist and this movie is kind of validating for anyone who's experienced that kind of treatment. My Dad wanted a football player and ended up with my asthmatic self instead. I was always told to sit down and shut up in order for him to "save face," attract as little attention as possible, even when I would TRY to participate in sports just to please him anyway just for his disappointment in return. I was always looked at by the people proximal of those situations as kind of a geek and a loser. I knew exactly what it felt like to be this main character. It's almost kind of funny that it gets so much criticism because in a meta way, the film is the "chicken little" of films that gets picked on so much. It gets accused for the town being needlessly cruel and the father being horribly degrading but that's... kind of the point? To me, that's the most realistic thing about this movie. I've lived that experience. And ironically I think the films' strongest strength is that sort of message. That the people we go out of our way to belittle and mistreat often don't deserve it and we should be a little more considerate or supportive. If Bionicpig sees this and is looking for more early to mid 2000s movies to review, I'd like to formally submit my recommendation for Over the Hedge. No other reason than nostalgia.

I get where you're coming from, and it's probably a difficult experience, but...put yourself in the shoes of your dad. Would you want to invest such a huge amount of time and effort (and in the case of mothers - health) in someone who's supposed to be strong, fit and smart, a reason to brag to your friends, your progeny that will carry on your name - only to end up with someone who disappoints your expectations? You have to understand your parents. It must be soulcrushing to watch your child grow and continuously fail to be like you know they're supposed to be.
@genericperson360
@genericperson360 2 жыл бұрын
@@beabea5985 Umm… no? It’s not the child’s fault if they’re born with imperfections, and the parent is 100% in the wrong if they emotionally abuse their child because of it. If anything I find it really gross to expect - not wish for, EXPECT - your child to be an all-star sports buff like you were back in the day. Your kid isn’t your sequel movie. They’re not “supposed to be” who you want them to be. They can be whoever they want, and so they might not be your “ideal” child. They might not even be able to do what you want them to in the first place. But that’s how life works. And if you can’t handle that, you have no business being a parent.

I’m always down for some Chicken Little ribbing. I was disappointed in this movie even as a kid. That’s a shame, because I really like everyone’s designs. Now, if this somehow gets remade, should they play up the fact that Chicken Little deserves better and ultimately gets away from the dad (maybe the town as well) or should they try to salvage his character, maybe have Buck be more scared or worried for his son instead of embarrassed by him?
@MillyKKitty

The fact Chicken Little was originally going to be a girl makes me a little sad. Like they could've kept the mother dead and make it so that the father is trying to raise a young girl, who's more into "masculine" activities like sports, games etc. But the town puts a lot of emphasis on the fact that people should be put into certain boxes based on how they look, and because of these standards the father feels like it is his fault his daughter is more of a tomboy. And the whole sky is falling thing could be how the town twisted one of Chicken Little's more "masculine" interests, making her the crazy lady of the town. edit: And now that I think about it, they could make the fox a into a parallel of Chicken Little, who has to do more masculine things because of her body type, while wishing to be more feminine. Would make a way better character arc than.... mindwashing her...
@Myrathosghost
@Myrathosghost 2 жыл бұрын
Actually the original story wouldnt have been the same at all, it would have been about Chicken Little going to summer camp and stoping literal Wolves in Sheeps clothing…..the sky falling was just gonna be an Acorn and she was Prone to Panic Attacks :| that was the original idea….if u look into it the person who came up with the original idea says this is the idea. We have a TON of TV shows and Movies from the 90s and Early 2000s showing that its okay to dress and behave how you want, one of my fav charas from that Area is from the show “Recess” and is a tomboy who also enjoys some girly stuff, not saying we didn’t(dont) need more but I am saying that that was over done at the time that’s probably why he would’ve gone with more of the story he was going to go with rather then the “single dad raising a daughter whos a tomboy and he blames himself cause she gets made fun of”
@MillyKKitty
@MillyKKitty 2 жыл бұрын
@@Myrathosghost I'm just saying they could have kept Chicken Little a girl but with the same "father tries to raise his kid without the mother" plot, but better. In the little mermaid, he was hurt by the death of his wife and while he was strict and harsh, he believed he was doing what was right for his daughters. When he destroyed Ariel’s treasures, he felt regretful immediately after and he had a reason to not trust humans which gives an understandable reason why he didn’t want Ariel to learn about them. In the end, he realizes his mistakes and supports her. He isn’t oblivious to his mistakes and actions. A lot of Disney parents are like Buck but the difference is that they think they are helping their child due to their past traumas. Buck only cares about his reputation. Moana’s father lost his friend in the sea so it’s understandable why’d he’d keep her away. Simba lost his father because of Scar, no duh he’d keep Kiara away from Kovu.
