@@Healthytarian So would you simply make the hummus as is & without the olive oil??
@Healthytarian
@Healthytarian Жыл бұрын
@@arlee1954 Yes, exactly. The oil is not needed at all. People and the hummus industry just got used to using olive oil or other oils when making hummus, and keep spreading around that information. Since hummus already requires tahini or sesame seeds, which are required to make a hummus of the right flavor and consistency, you already have a "creamy" and "fat-rich" ingredient. There is no need for any oil.

There is always a supply of hummus in my fridge. Yesterday I made it by adding roasted red peppers and the last batch was made with Kalamata olives. I don't add any oil, but there is some oil in the tahini. I love experimenting with what I add to the basic hummus, but also how I use it in so many things.

As always, the most well thought out and communicated recipe vids on youtube! (I've seen THOUSANDS FOLKS!) Evita, I would love to have a chat with you sometime about the use of oils. ANY oil for that matter including olive and sesame. Seems the more I research, (going on 40 years now) the more I'm convinced that oil from ANY source is actually detrimental to the endothelial lining of our arteries. Dr. Esselstyn, former head of Cardiology at the Cleveland Clinic has shown this over and over in his studies and his successful REVERSAL of heart disease in many patients. This reversal never occured unless the patient GAVE UP oil, in ALL FORMS! I believe the Mediterranean and other "diets" are seemingly more successful for heart health and health overall, not because of Olive Oil, but in SPITE of it due to a much greater intake of fruits & veggies (antioxidants/ phytochemicals etc...) and would be MUCH more health promoting without the use of olive oil or even nuts for that matter! Just my two cents! LOVE your vids and have saved dozens and dozens of them!!!
@Healthytarian
@Healthytarian 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much, and yes, that is true. **All oils should be avoided for optimal arterial function, heart health, and many more things.** This is an old video, where I was still in the midst of research on oil, and thus still using it, until I had enough data to move away from recommending them with certainty. Since then, I have switched personally and professionally away from this common stance in our society that "certain oils are healthy" and help people understand why no oil is best. Unfortunately, there is no way to update a video like this, without deleting it altogether and making a new one, and I have not been able to get to any video work in over a year now, so that is all for future projects. For more info about this, please see my article: www.evolvingwellness.com/post/why-are-oils-not-part-of-a-whole-food-plant-based-diet With regards to nuts and seeds, they are whole plant foods and a small or reasonable amount is a good idea for most healthy individuals, especially women and children who require more fat for proper hormone function and growth. Cheers!

@Healthytarian
@Healthytarian 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Melvin. You can add in soaked cashews to your hummus and blend them to make it creamy in place of the tahini. Adding both tahini and cashews may make the hummus too thick or too high in fat. Cashews instead of tahini will also give your hummus a more neutral flavor that you can then flavor with any herbs or spices you like.

I would be interested in a whole foods hummus recipe too. Maybe you've already done that. I'll go look at the other videos on your channel to see. But, thank you for this recipe. I'm trying to move my family over to a whole food method of eating, but it's difficult for them. My husband eats meat still and he finds it difficult because he doesn't know how to eat healthy on his own and what my 3 year sees him eat, she wants too. Luckily she's that way with me too. Last night she was hungry and asked for a treat. I told her she could have a healthy brownie bar, but she chose dehydrated "cheesy" kale instead.
@Healthytarian
@Healthytarian 5 жыл бұрын
When you say "whole food" Anna, do you mean without oil, as all the other ingredients are whole food? If so, yes, this is an old recipe where I was still conditioned on the idea of adding oil, and since that time have long moved on eliminating all oil in my diet and educational materials. An oil-free hummus is super easy, and as I found, the oil is completely unnecessary. If anything, one can just use more sesame seeds or tahini to improve consistency. So you can fully use this recipe and just omit the oil, and add a little more tahini if desired. I have included an oil-free hummus recipe in my new cooking course, which should be available later this fall. And great to hear about your little one :) Yes, young kids fully imprint upon their parents' behaviors, so it is great she sees what you are eating.

@@Healthytarian Yes. Someone in the comments had mentioned that they wanted you to do a hummus recipe that included olives instead to the olive oil or maybe some other type of oil replacement. But, as I thought about it more, olives are quite strong in flavour. I know my husband wouldn't want me to make hummus with olives, but I wouldn't mind making some tapinade on the side and just adding it to mine. That's an excellent idea to add more tahini. I LOVE tahini so much.

At that time stamp, I said it can be stored for "up to a week", meaning up to 1 week. You cannot store homemade or store-bought humus that has been opened for more than a few days or one week at most in a sealed container and always using clean utensils to remove any amount you wish to eat or elese it could spoil faster.

No Suresh, it is not a good idea to eat any kind of fish today, including tuna fish, and especially processed foods from cans. There are simply too many chemicals and toxins in seafood today to make it a safe and healthy food source. In addition, it is extremely bad for our environment, as our oceans, lakes, and rivers are being over-fished with entire ecosystems collapsing. The healthiest way is also the most sustainable way to eat: whole foods and plant foods, like fruits, vegetables, beans, grains, nuts, and seeds. See the film "What the Health" for a quick understanding of all this, if you are new to it: www.whatthehealthfilm.com/

Would perhaps be appropriate to inform viewers about the dangers of liquid oil. Olive oil is as unhealthy as any other oil. One would expect someone who advice on healthy eating to educate themselves on such a basic fact.
@Healthytarian

+Riaan De Winnaar Yes, absolutely. An oil-free approach will be coming out via any new videos. However, as I am sure you can appreciate yourself, whether as professionals or as part of our personal life, we all go through our own dietary changes and evolutions at different times. And while there are many experts who support an oil-free approach today, many more still do not. So going oil-free or not seeing certain oils as beneficial, is far from a basic fact. Unfortunately one can never win to satisfy everyone at the same time.

So scientifically speaking humans do not require any additional oil in our diet. 1 in 2 people alive today will die from cardiovascular disease 40 years prematurely. 1 in 3 people are obese, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, cancer... dietary and preventable diseases are out of control. People need to be educated so they are able to healthy decisions. It's a big responsibility to recommend healthy food and the only healthy oil is no oil.

Hummus means chickpeas in arabic so your title is kinda weird, there's no no-chickpea hummus. Like avocado guacamoli.
@Healthytarian
@Healthytarian 5 жыл бұрын
The reason for the specific title is that today people and food companies make hummus out of all kinds of beans and legumes, so I am specifying that this is actually a chickpea-based hummus. There is lentil hummus, black bean hummus, edamame hummus that one can make, etc. While this may not be in alignment with the traditional Arabic approach, in many parts of the world today this dish has evolved to encompass many variations and versions thanks to our greater plant food awareness and meal creativity.
