This week we are almost done with the big maintenance on the 2008 Aprilia Scarabeo 500. The engine of most heavy Piaggio motorscooters are alike so if you own a Piaggio Beverly, Piaggio MP3 or other big motorscooter, this video might be of use.

I replaced the belt and rollers on my Scarabeo 500 with the help of this excellent video. These scooters use 8 rollers. The nuts holding the variator pulleys are 21mm and 27mm. I liberally sprayed brake cleaner in the area after removing the variator components to flush away the dust. One week before doing this job I sprayed penetrating oil on the nuts and, subsequently, they were fairly easy to remove with my 1/4" impact wrench. As was shown, seating the belt on the rear pulley is a challenge, but seating it as deeply as possible is important. When reassembling the front pulley, it's important to make certain the belt is not being pinched between the pulleys. Watch the video for most of this information and what I'm offering is just a summary.

This was a helpful video - think I figured out why my scooter does only 25. And special tools are good investment vs breaking the variator. (which is very easy to do)

You can take out variator nut without it Just use impact gun like this clown tried on clutch and those 2 nuts and don't heat anything

I PUT ON A NEW BELT ON MY 2005 APRILIA SCARABEO 500 AND ENDED UP POUNDING A PIECE OF WOOD BETWEEN THE REAR PULLY DISKS TO SPREAD THEM APART ENOUGH TO GET THE BELT DEEP ENOUGH TO GET THE BELT AND FRONT PULLIES ON PROPERLY.

first the small washer on the bearing, then the large one under the nut .. checked its workshop manual .. not on the spare parts manual.

Yes, this is confusing - the parts diagram shows it differently than the workshop manual. Small one first according to the manual.

Thanks for the video, @Chiefpep. I have a 400. Do you know what might cause a rattle sound for 1-2 seconds right after going from standstill? It's only at low rpm. I cannot replicate it when it's standstill. It's a bit louder with a passenger behind me. Thanks!

It could be the transmission belt flapping and hitting the case and the anti-flap wheel

Super helpful, thank you - the "extended shop manual" is unclear about whether the first washer on the axle goes inside the transmission cover, or outside. (It goes inside, as you show clearly at 20:58, although in the bloopers I was happy to see that this wasn't entirely obvious!) It probably isn't critical, but at 21:15 you put the larger of the two outside washers on first, followed by the small one. That's the way the parts diagram shows the assembly, but the shop manual says in ALL CAPS to do it the opposite way - little washer first. Maybe so the small washer only presses against the bearing race?

Feels strange. The smaller is smaller because that fits nicely under the nut. Personally I always believe the exploded parts view. That's made by Aprilia. These are blueprints basically. I wouldn't worrie too much about it.

hello friend please can you tell me how to mount the rollers on one side there is the plastic and on the other there is the iron having the variator in hand does the plastic go to the right or left?

I'm getting ready to change the belt and rollers on my Scarabeo 500 GT, so this vid was helpful, and thank you. One suggestion: some of your friends in the US are still transitioning to metric sizes so we might not have the proper sized sockets yet. If you'll share the sizes of the sockets on some of the larger nuts, we can be sure they are at hand when we begin the work.

I am sorry, I don't have the Scarabeo anymore. But, an Imperial size won't fit a Metric nut... So, you will need a metric socket anyway... (I guess)

It's a vario lock key. You can order them anywhere from any brand. Just Google it and search by image

friend after the casing on the bell and clutch you put first the big washer then the small one and the nut is not like that, the small washer comes first then the big one and the nut ...

Hi m fan of u, coz i have the same Scooter scarabeo 500ccm 2003 But my kilometer counting stoped;-(( Since my friend changed the batterie and front wheel Do u know where is that KM SENSOR? Can i buy a new one? Or it has to do with batterie? Thanks 4 ur help

I don't know anymore. It could be the front or the rear wheel. Please check the workshop manual.

Pues quedé en la misma situación por qué también le pedí de favor me pudieseostrar físicamente como es la bobina para una motoneta Aprilia scarabeo 500 2007 ya que la moto que compre al parecer no la traía ya ni siquiera traía la bujia

If you run it often on the highway, 500. If you run it most of the time in the city, 300

Martin naprawa przewodu gumowego to niestety druciarstwo... wymiana 30 cm to kont 15 PLN (3,5 $) a koszty ponownej naprawy to 200 PLN ( 55$)...
