I had the amazing opportunity to train with the kids at the Temple for close to a month 10 years ago. They were phenomenal - what touched me most was how kind the kids are, it felt like a huge family . The training was hard core but the bonds were so strong , they supported each other always , such bright Spirits . I see a lot of negative comments , unless you go there and experience it - it’s hard to understand . I was so proud of and humbled by the kids- they spoiled me completely . I have huge respect and Love always for Shaolin and Shaolin culture.

@@Ducati368 That's true. 😀 The vegetarianism/veganism associated with Dharmic religions truly is a great thing. Interestingly, in ancient times, vegetarianism was extremely common in Greece, India and East Asia, especially with the spread of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain ideas. Great to see an ancient philosophy, once wide-spread, still being practiced by those who are dedicated to life and the environment.

I understand when the Father said, someone told him Kungfu is no longer needed but this is untrue, there will always be a place in life for this Martial art. It is character building, healthy, Teaches discipline & self defense & in these times we are in, self defense has never been more needed. Sure it wont stop a bomb, it cannot stop bullets from a machine gun but on the ground, it will keep you alive. However as a Mother, i find it beyond difficult to just say nothing & leave the child behind & leave. I would prepare & give knowledge to my child & hug & kiss goodbye, love & Respect is everything.

Kids are not there to fulfill their parents' dreams. Parents should not be allowed to force their kids in such institutions if the kids don't want too. It is as shameful as the parents forcing their kids to learn some music instruments or doing beauty contests...

this is a very ignorant western insight, they are not there to fullfill their parents dreams, the kids that go to kung fu school come from extremely poor families, no normal parents in China sends their children to kung fu schoo, it is a way for the poorest people to make something of themselves, they cannot afford to learn instruments or do beauty contests

Kids are not wise, sometimes alittle push in the right direction goes a long way. The asian way is that the adult would see the bigger picture clearly and have more wisdom than kids. If you let children choose their own fate it would often be detrimental ... no school, junk food and lots of computer games would be their choice.

😂😂 kids like eating and playing, that's what my daughter wrote down for her favourite things to do. I don't think that needs any further support or encouragement! Instead we should push them to do things that require discipline and commitment!! If they can learn that I don't care through which way, that would be the best gift you can give to your kids. How many grow ups are still living without a purpose, because any meaningful activity requires discipline, responsibility and commitment. Of course eating and playing don't require those qualities! 😊

@@ramizparkar4199 I'm partial to that... Should Buddhist protest against their own bodies too when their mmune stytem fights against a disease? Do you get mad when your body fights off a cold for you? Or are you suggesting that Buddhist women have no right to fight and repell being sexually assaulted? Part of being a serious Martial Artist is studying all religions, as well as homogenous comminalities. Your body fights, struggles, even against your own will, and cognitive abilities. You have to train in order to be successful at anything. There are warriors everywhere my friend, that's something noone can never stop. The focus to not hurt a sentient being is a good focus, and Tenant of buddism. It helps us to grow, and builds a respect for each other. Would you say Buddhist temples In Thailand to not feed orphaned Thai fighters? They often feed anyone who comes in who's hungry. Buddhist believe in reincarnation, so to make it short, whatever you do in this life is a stage for your next incarnation of growth. You should know this already. It's to help you on your journey to reach the highest Heaven.. Trayastrimsa*. So in Short.. Everyone has time to perfect themselves, and get better with each life. However you do make good point, one that has been made before. In my humble opinion, I think to study, and, to engage, people as you are doing now, with an open mind, you will find your answers to many things; but not with Martial Artist, because we aren't experts on religion & faith. I think to be reasonable, is the focus of any serious religious person. Life is subjected to phenomenons like, evils, and imperfections; you must fight, to withstand those relative manipulations, from whare noone knows they come. Then you will truly understand, we know nothing about this existence wich we inhabit. (I am not Buddhist btw) I wish you well, and knowledge that leads you to good things.

But Mayweather Jr. wanted to box. Its different if a parents like "go do this, because I wanted to amd didnt". I mean, your children are not extensions of you, or exist for your bragging rights they should be allowed to find their own talents, not forced into the ones you wish you had but dont. If the kid was really into martial arts and was excited to go thats one thing, but it just seems like hes being a good Chinese boy and obeying his parents regardless of his own wishes.

@@childofcascadia what you describe is basically "acceptable" in Chinese culture though. It's been happening since forever. I have a huge issue with the parents of QI Yanlis parents, who in the fuck, would just abandon their own kid, at shalolin temple? Without consulting any of the instructors first? I'm surprised that kid, isn't full with hatred and anger, resentment towards his parents and especially his father, of all people...? Secondly wouldn't the kid, need permission from both of his parents to get into the temple, and have both signing an agreement, that allows the kid to reside within the temple? And how long the kid would be staying, and at what age, he would be leaving the temple, etc? It's obvious to me the kid don't want to, but what forced to, all because his father wanted to? That seems a little messed up, if you ask me?

Living is hard. This curse of one child policy huge penalties (ended only on 2016) and cost of the roof above the heads and living make people unable to be proper parents. 😢 I personally restrict my parents and mother in law influence my children. My children under my total control but it has high cost.

I'm not even sure if I can believe the tears and such on camera. They sent away their child to a freaken hardcore shaolin temple and just left him there for such a long time? That makes no logical sense how they'd lie and let them stay there that long and the child comes back and has no genuine reason to question what the heck the parents were doing. If anything that's a deeper form of child abuse. Good he became a strong monk, but against his will for so long? I can't believe the crying and hugs are genuine. There's an ulterior motive.

i think this kind of training would not just teach them the value of having sound mind and body, but also a preparation for them to learn how to survive facing the reality of life alone.. the downside is that they may be bored learning in school unless they find it interesting for them to learn science, math, languages and history and other sports and music and arts..

12:25min "He was 6 years old when I sent him to the Shaolin Temple" change "sent" to "sold". They dont want you to know but I know from Shaolin Master who was sold and he said: "the most kids there was sold because parents are poor" some of the little kids there were sold even with the age of 3. The most were sold with the age of 5-6. How cool sounds it now? :P

Leave a child for 5 days and come back a yr later... How utterly inhumane.. Do u know how much Trauma that child undergoes? They carry that sense of abandonment all their lives. Yes kids adapt they are good at adapting cz it's sink or swim... I will never understand how adults can do this to kids and justify it.

Horrible parenting really. They don't know how to raise their children so they just throw them in captivity like animals. The parents are the problem, not the kids. How can you expect a kid who lives most of his life away from his parents to grow up and be happy.

If I was like those parents or guardians who would do something like that man I wished and hope and prayed that they would learned something once I can take them home officially and without a problem or others to not letting them know that I have had abandoned them at the end for unexplained reasons or others to left them to a martial arts defender and experts for saving my only hope of future children to help them in a life of future we don't know nor not fully understand of world's changing for the whatever and however outcomes when we are and will face so it's best than later

In America this would be child abandonment. I know that the study of martial arts requires discipline but to not see or talk to your child for a year is a bit much. And I'd like to know the statistics of how many of the boys finish their training and also how many rebel against their parents. Plus to leave them without even telling them they are going is just cruel and traumatizing.
