Chucky introduced me to horror as a kid and has always been my favorite, this one was always my favorite out of the series. You can never mess with a classic. And although you didn't get the most of Chucky, his personality still rang through so well. My favorite scene was always when he visited John and let's out that theatrical laugh when he realizes he has to get Andy. That laugh is iconic.

Locarbmonster what i mostly love about the classic trailer is that they really don't show chucky's face or full body being alive, they wanted to save that very moment for the audience to see in the movie theatures, and oh my gosh it's the reason in why that scene became so iconic! A pretty well made trailer back in the 80s, a trailer that made hundreds of people so curious in wanting to watch this movie to see chucky coming to life ^^
@Locarb

There's not really much I can say about the first "Child's Play" because you're review summed it up nicely. The only things I'll add is that Chucky is definitely at his scariest here. Especially when stalking and confronting Andy at the end. The score really sells it too and STILL gives me chills!!!

A cool scene is when the detective asks the bum where he got the doll after saving the mom from getting raped and the bum says he got it at an old, abandoned toy store or whatever the line was and the reaction on Sarandon's face is priceless. He then explains to Ms. Barkley where he killed Charles Lee Ray. At the toy store.

Personally, this one is my favorite. (Usually I've found people's favorite is CP 1, CP 2, or Bride). I just love the gritty Chicago atmosphere and the suspense of this one. It's just got that classic original feel, and like you, I attribute the success of it mostly to Tom Holland. Also, i love the music in this one...the music they use throughout but especially the song they play during the end credits. It's..."hauntingly beautiful," if that makes sense. If you haven't heard it, there's a director's commentary online of Tom Holland talking about the movie while it plays. For some reason, they excluded him from the 20th anniversary DVD. Really cool to listen to it!

Great review man. I should've bought the Scream Factory collector's edition upon its release. This movie scared me as kid. That scene where Andy looks out the window and sees Chucky climbing stairs at the other end of the building was extremely effective for me as you can imagine, being Andy's age at the time. I really wish they would bring back those animitronic practical effects.

Finally got around to watching your reviews. I remember rewatching this one a few years ago and I told Anthony one of the great parts about it was that it really made you think the kid did it. In my mind I sometimes try to rewrite how I think the reveal would be if Andy was the Killer. Another element I am happy we can agree on is the return of Det.Mike Norris, if they reveal that he tried to keep an eye on Andy as much as possible would be a great addition to the story of not bookend it for him and Andy being the ones to stop him. Well done review. Plus I'm sure this was discussed before but listen to Child's Play by The Ghetto Boys and hear the complete and I mean this in the most sarcastic way graphic details of how the film goes by Bushwick Bill

I love what you said about the best one liner in the movie. Isn't not Chucky if there is no cursing and it's great that it's part of it because who would expect a child's plaything to curse. Also it's fun to see the reaction of any kid holding the doll when it talks like that. It's also amazing that even a child would believe a doll could walk and talk at all, much less kill and teach to kill, and be able to hide off this from adults until it's their time to go, but of course that's the whole appeal.

Child's Play is one of my favourite horror franchises of all time. I don't think this movie works as well without Brad Dourif. His voice over for Chucky was amazing. I had no idea as a kid who it was that voiced Chucky but it was the biggest reason I loved it growing up. It wasn't until RZ Halloween that I realised it was Brad Dourif, which amazed me even more. This is your first review. I have watched and loved it, subscribed, and will be watching all your other reviews of the big 80's horrors.

Excellent video Cody. As for your negatives about the film, I do agree with about those scenes where we know that is someone dressed in Chucky clothes and running. Those scenes didn't work for me back then and they certainly don't hold up now. As for Chucky's character, I don't consider the limitations they had on him as a negative. No one knew how popular Chucky would become so I consider what they did with him a plus. It allow them make Chucky into the horror icon that he is today.

I was lucky enough to have this be my first child's play movie. You spent two thirds of the movie thinking that you may never see the doll come to life, or if you did it might not live up to the expectation. When it finally got to the pay-off you realize you are witnessing some next level shit. The animatronics absolutely still hold up to this day. I only wish that I could see it for the first time again.

I think the Child's Play series should end with Chris Sarandon back as Mike Norris finally doing what he failed to do in the toy store and kill Charles Lee Ray for good. My theory on how to kill Chucky permanently is that if his human corpse which is buried in Hackensack, New Jersey as seen in Bride is still intact the heroes could do a reverse voodoo spell that transfers Chucky's soul from the doll back into his original human body then they'd pump him full of bullets killing him easily and the series would end with all of Charles Lee Ray's efforts to avoid death being in vain because he'll have ended up back at square one. Back in his original human body bleeding to death from gunshot wounds just like the circumstances that forced him to become a doll in the first place only this time there's no saving him and the voodoo can't help him.

The first original Child's Play is amazing. This is the movie that made me a huge fan of the horror genre and Brad Dourif is a damn legend. No one will ever be able to play the role of Chucky. How did Andy's mom go to a mental hospital if there were 2 cops there to testify that Chucky was alive

The cops said chucky didn't come alive. Basically didn't back her up. I thought that didn't seem in character for the Chris Sarandon character.

The little kid who played Chucky when he's running in the background was played by the same actor who played Isaac in Children of the Corn.

I can't choose between this one or the sequel! Even with the flaws, they're so well hidden that you must have cat-eyes to see them, even if in the rest of the series Chucky doesn't need help and i think his lines are really awensome, like the one when he comes to life cracks me! :))

My favourite movie from the series! I can't put any other movie, like A Nightmare On Elm Street i go around 1 and 3, i'm not sure about Friday The 13th and maybe will never be sure, but definetly Child's Play 1 is my favourite!!! The way he becomes more and more human, the mystery, and was the first character slasher that i made contact with in this movie, and i'm only 17!

Man, i used to be scared shitless for Chucky! I was scared exactly by the very first movie! I didn't know the name, i didn't know that Chucky became to look so real, only a plastic doll that murders! Even if today Chucky is pretty low for other serial killers like Myers, Leatherface or Jason, i love Chucky!

I wish Hollywood would stop milking these franchises. I would just love a definitive ending to these movies. Wasn’t a fan of cult. But I hope they do the new tv show justice.

Fav scene was when Andy’s mom opens the battery slot on chucky back n the head spins around, ‘hi I’m chucky wanna play?!’ N it comes out sadistic as shit. That’s when daddy runs kids. That’s when daddy fn runs.

Catherine Hicks (Karen) and Kevin Yagher (Chucky's creator) met on set and were married a year later. Chucky's full name, Charles Lee Ray, is derived from the names of notorious killers Charles Manson, Lee Harvey Oswald (assassin of John F. Kennedy) and James Earl Ray (assassin of Martin Luther King). In the scene where Chucky runs behind Maggie in the hallway, Chucky was actually played by Alex Vincent's younger sister. The original plot idea was to have life-like Good Guy dolls that had blood and latex skin. If the kids tore the latex skin, they could go out and buy Official Good Guy bandages. In a blood-brother pact, Andy cut his own hand and mixed his blood with Chucky's, thus causing him to come alive and become human. In an interview, Don Mancini said in the original script, Child's Play (1988) was at first a satire on toy marketing and merchandising for children, before the idea morphed into a horror film instead. Originally the studio billed Chris Sarandon as the top star over Catherine Hicks, but Sarandon requested that Hicks be top billed, since he felt she carried the picture. Catherine Hicks won the Saturn award for this film. Chucky loses his right hand in each installment from the original trilogy. Body Count: 6 The original working title for the film was "Batteries Not Included" before it became known Steven Spielberg was also making a film with the same title. It was then changed to "Blood Buddy" before settling on "Child's Play".

I have a personal connection with this movie because my father lived in that building that the Barkley family lived in and I was there all the time as well. It’s a famous building. My mother reminds me of the character in the movie and I’m in a way Andy. So it’s kind of like watching me in that building having a single mom in Chicago during a similar year.
