CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Theo (Clive Owen) leaves a crowded cafe moments before a bomb blows it up.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Y Tu Mamá También and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban director Alfonso Cuarón returns to the helm to tell this futuristic tale in which society is without hope since humankind lost its ability to procreate. The year is 2027, and women can no longer give birth. The youngest inhabitant of the planet has just died at the age of 18, and all hope for humanity has been lost. As civilization descends into chaos, a dying world finds one last chance for survival in the form of a woman who has become inexplicably pregnant. Now, as warring nationalistic sects clash and British leaders try to maintain their totalitarian stronghold on the country, a disillusioned bureaucrat (Clive Owen) is brought back into the fold of activism by his guerrilla ex-wife (Julianne Moore). Reluctantly, he takes on the daunting task of escorting Kee (Claire-Hope Ashitey), the refugee who represents humankind's last hope for survival, out of harm's way and into the care of a mysterious organization known as The Human Project. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Charlie Hunnam, and Michael Caine co-star in this adaptation of author P.D. James's gripping 1992 novel.

Just look at the faces of the people at the beginning. They're only extras, but all their expressions, and there are many different types, are spot on. This movie was brilliant even in seemingly small details.

Always wondered what the point of this scene was. It’s kinda pointless. Add nothing to the plot. I get them explaining the “youngest person” dying. But then a random explosion? Why. This movie wouodnauve been no different and just as acclaimed without a random explosion with no reason or explanation. This isn’t a Michael bay film. So weird.

@@someguy42093because it sets the tone for the film. We see the main character totally disconnected from the situation not caring about the youngest person alive dying. Also the explosion works to shock the audience with the type of film it's set to be

The attention to detail is amazing. If you look at the Policeman's helmet at 0:52 the Royal Cipher is C R (Charles *Rex) as opposed to E R (Elizabeth Regina). In other words, the Queen has died and Prince Charles has taken the throne and become King Charles III.

This will probably sound quite strange, but this is one of those films that makes me feel really happy. Maybe it's because it doesn't wallow like so many post-apocalyptic or otherwise 'dystopian future' themed films do (ie: look how terrible the future is for 90 minutes) - there's always that glimmer of hope. And these wonderfully crafted characters are fighting for a better world from beginning to end. Love it. A work of art.

Yeah, I didn't get it for a long time either. At least the first two viewings I did not understand what he meant, but I simply unconsciously brushed it off. It's odd that we don't understand what he means...maybe we are too troubled by the actual trauma the video of the blast caused us? It's possible, but seems unlikely. It's something that's meant to comfort Theon (us) after such an experience. Whether or not he (we) consciously realize what it means, or even heard what he said, we understand the friendly intent and concern behind it.

One of the most interesting things I love thinking about when watching this movie is what the rest of the world is really doing through all this chaos.... and I'm not talking about the film's government propaganda that shows up on their tv news describing world events as though only Britain stands. It's like the two different Britains that Theo ventures through during the film. A Britain that's partially intact and surviving with ads on billboards, traffic, etc. and then another Britain that's falling apart into total civil war. It would seem very logical for all other superpowers to be broadcasting the same crap to their people describing the world as chaotic and dangerous while making their own respective governments seem like they're the only ones left standing. (Basically, scare your own people into believing their country is faring the best amid all the violence to keep loyalty, obedience, and patriotic fervor high in times of such desperation)

In a way, he's not far from the truth. As we speak, the world around us is collapsing. It's not happening right away, but it's gradual. Our world's soil has 60 years worth of harvests left. When it's gone, there goes a major source of food production. Our ice caps have been melting at an extreme rate over the past month, and dozens of scientists and experts have stated this will cause a crisis for all of mankind. With this comes the risk of ancient viruses and bacteria thawing out and wreaking havoc on the world. Add this to immigrations from the wars in the east, eventual migrations due to climate, overpopulation, mass die-offs of all animal species - and the extinction of many others in the past year, as well as the ever growing use of fossil fuels, the increasing release of Methane from ice, harmful climate change - and the fact that one of the biggest deniers of climate change just became the 45th President of the United States... And you have a recipe for the end of the world. And it's happening right now, and there's nothing we can do to stop it. It's over.

I don't think you can call Children of Men slightly unsettling. I think it's one of the more extreme dystopian settings out there. Humanity on the brink of extinction, UK one of the only governments left in the world, and thus overwelmed with immigrants, people living under a police state regime, euthanasia all the rage. In my opinion one of the most bleak and nightmarish visions of the future, only marginally better than total apocalypse.

Cameron? Really? Cameron is a popcorn blockbuster-spouting machine. Yeah, he is capable of making good movies (albeit once or twice a decade for some reason) but virtually all of his portfolio is extremely easy to digest for a typical summer audience. Not to mention the obnoxious liberal pandering, mixed pretty damn ironically with a Michael Bay-like level of obsession with anything military-related. Cuarón has always been into, at the very least, kind of ambitious cinema, the third Harry Potter film being quite possibly the only exception to this rule. If anybody, I would compare him to Fincher.

What i love about cuaron is that he directed a critical and box office blockbuster...and he acknowledge than nobody want sequels so he move forward to his roots with a mexican drama. Cameron thinks we are blown away as we wers for one week in 2009 so he is filming 10 sequels

At 1:10 you can see the Shard in the background, despite construction on it not beginning until three years _after_ this movie was made. That’s pretty good attention to detail.

Very unique movie! I love it so much. Clive Owen was fantastic!!! Children of Men is one of the most underrated and overlooked Sci-Fi films of the 2000's - next to Mission to Mars, Supernova, The Cell, Pandorum, Serenity, Cargo, Sunshine, Eagle Eye, The 6th Day, Equilibrium, XChange, Gamer, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Ultraviolet, Push, Signs, The Fourth Kind, The Chronicles of Riddick, Hulk, Evolution, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Star Trek: Nemesis, Starforce, The Box, The Day After Tomorrow, A Sound of Thunder, Doom, Jurassic Park 3, Paycheck, Cypher, Resident Evil: Apocalypse, Death Race, Hollow Man, Blindness, Avatar (2004), The Forgotten.

The minimal score in this movie really adds to the tension and realism of it, and shows that intensity and suspense can be built with good directing, and not rely on over the top music that says “This is when you’re supposed to feel nervous”

Beautiful film. Read the book a few weeks ago before finding out there was an adaptation for it, and one that is from my favorite director (Cauron). It's strange how films like this highlight what is wrong with the world...

what i love about the opening scene, isn't the bombing scene of the cafe but when he walks out of the cafe and then you get a look all the people around him, doesn't seem like there's much to that but I like to think what every person in the shot is thinking, whether they are distressed and anxious that the human race is hanging from a thread. It may look like a normal life but I can just tell that there is fear in every one of them.
