I really think Raising Arizona was easily more cohesive, Snake Eyes easily had a better plot, Bringing out the Dead was more meaningful and deep, Lord of War was infinitely better (in every way) and... well, honestly, Mandy just didn't seem to have had much of a "plot" if you are someone who particularly needs that. I suppose compared to the Wicker Man and most of Cage's more recent offerings, I can see what you mean. Just this writer's perspective.

The cinematography and the visuals and the artistic approach and the acting was superb BUT THE SOUNDTRACK WAS EPIC OVERLOADED . This guy was a genius , this track reminds me of Tangerine Dream mixed with John Carpenter's unique synth music of his early 80s movie. Genius director with a genius composer = a unique movie experience...

I think this movie is a masterpiece. From the visuals and acting to the soundtrack. Simply beautiful and haunting. It is a unique movie in that it blends art house with grind house in such a good way. It has been a couple of days since i saw it for the first time and it still lingers on like no other movie. It is so otherworldly in it's rage and sadness.

Despite his straight to DVD efforts the past years, I still think Nic Cage is a terrific if not brilliant actor (if he brings it). Too bad, memes have taken over his once untouched status in the late 80's and 90's. I hope we will see him return to big productions where he can show his acting talents to the fullest like in this movie. Great soundtrack, RIP J. Johannsson.

There's one crucial difference: Carpenter always wrote his music as "wallpaper"; it's just there, doing its job without you really noticing. Johannson's music is much more overt and noticable. The music in Mandy was front-and-center in a lot of scenes.

I remember how I first watched Cosmatos Beyond The Black Rainbow, but the thing is, I didn't really saw the release date of this movie. And when I finished watching it I was just amazingly shocked that it camed out in 2010. It feels all the way from old analogue Kubrick's era. And now this. Amazingly crafted masterpiece in best traditions of Faltermeyer & Carpenter, unimaginable. It still hurts me so much that Johan's music didn't get into Denis Villeneuve's Bladerunner 2049 and mother! by Darren Aranofsky. RIP.
