I totally agree with what you are saying but I actually liked Eldorado although the acting was duff. We would visit the set from time to time as my uncle lived just along the road from it. It is shocking how the BBC waste money but there again, they don't have to earn the money like the independent stations so they don't know the value of it because it's us the licence payer that foots the bill.

This were ITV shines through at being more successful at making a comedy series in Spain, Benidorm was way better a lasted for years and look at how many actors that had moved on since it was cancelled. You still see them today.

I always thought that the BBC missed a trick in promoting El-duff-ado. They could have had characters from EastEnders going on holiday to the resort. Angie and Den having a second honeymoon in the sun, but both get lovers instead?

This is so weird because I was just thinking about this yesterday and I watched videos about it, and definitely it was a total waste of TV licence fee payers money. They are a total disgrace, I remember watching the first episode of Eldorado and what rubbish. Eastenders is no better, come on for such a small place, most people are planning on murder and revenge. I didn’t see Eldorado as a waste of money…..if you were a teenager at the time as I was Eldorado was a breath of fresh air from all the doom and gloom of the UK. Changes on Eldorado had already taken place that made it vastly better than when it first started and when the BBC axed it the show was attracting over 10million viewers. I honestly believe that if the BBC had stuck with Eldorado for another year it would’ve been fine.

Did Emmerdale build their own village in 1997 because they used actual Yorkshire villages in the 80's and the residents ended up getting sick of them due to the increased broadcasting schedules?

The show ran for a year continuously, it wasn’t split into two seasons.

'Eldorado', or, 'El-bore-ardo', as it was known was hyped-up so much when it was first shown that it was inevitable that it would be a complete flop. Hardly anyone identified with any of the characters, which was hardly surprising considering it was set in an British ex-pat community in Spain. And, some of the actors they got were not only wooden but irritating with it. They weren't likable at all. I think I lasted less than 3 episodes before I'd had enough. It doesn't surprise me at all that the BBC squander 10 million on building a small town as a set. They really did think they were like Hollywood, back then, having the hubris to waste money on something there was never any guarantee of it being successful. They thought that, because they'd done well with Eastenders, that they could splash out on practically any concept they liked and it would be instantly accepted by the British viewing public. How wrong they were.

I remember when Eldorado was broadcast. I think I manged to watch 1 episode from start to finish. It was a right load of tosh !

I watched the making of eldorado, this show almost ended the BBC as the government was questioning why they had to have tax payer money anyway. The show actually gets better towards the end I've been watching re runs. They ended it as ratings climed

Going further back 'Albion Market' was supposed to a sister show to Coronation Street. Lasted about a year and that show WAS garbage.

My recollections of the horror of the complete and utter wastage of bbc spending continued after the series flopped. Despite having built an entire village, once the program failed the houses could not be put onto the real estate market as the bonkers broadcasting corpse didn't have the foresight to put plumbing in the houses let alone wire them so they could be connected to mains electricity. the whole concept of a sitcom based in Spain with ex=pats, local Spanish, other Europeans was good. the formulation, writing etc good but the way it was executed just cheap, cheap looking sets, cheap looking actors, rubbish acting and storylines. Benidorm was for 1o seasons it wasn't a sitcom and went bad after season 5 but it still worked the last season still got 7 odd million viewers not bad for 2018.

As far a wasting licence payers money goes. How many people did the BBC send to the Eurovision Song Contest last weekend? Surely they only need a presenter each for the TV and Radio shows that were broadcast and a few back room staff. Not the BBC, They took Uncle Tom Cobbley and all, to Turin For example that great non talent. Ryland did his Radio 2 show from some square in the city and had others in tow, WHY ? All at licence payers expense. Something must be done to bring the BBC into line and the real world !

I have never seen an episode of this show. I wonder how many did. When they first started Eastenders not knowing if it would be a success did they build that set?

the problem was that this should was rushed. there is the video trouble at the top and one of them is about eldorado. the problem was that it was woke before woke or i guess pc as you called it back then. one of the was they would find a couple of disabled lesbians for norway who happened to be wondering around spain. they would speak spanish or what ever for 10 mins without subtitles. but then they did get some of their money back by selling the set. the video was number one in woolies chart, the sold it to some of the networks. when it started to turn away it became popular. but the new boss didnt want soaps and want my high brow shows.

Rupert Murdock wanted to buy the show but the BBC refused, so he promised them he'd slaughter it in the press. He did. By the end it was one of BBC's most watched shows but when Alan Yentob replaced Jonathan Powell (the dude who commissioned the show) as controller of BBC1 he cancelled it regardless. The show did have some really shit actors and some really ugly actors (Nathan) the early stories were shit too. I was about 19 at the time and only watched to perv out on a bit of *Pilar Moreno,* she was smoking hot.
