Roanoke didn't seem like a mystery after you get more details. They wrote on a nearby tree Croatoan, which was a name of an island south of the settlement. The tribe there had an alliance with the colony, even the leader of the tribe being set in charge of the colony. The only reason it is still considered a mystery is that the returning supply ship never got the chance to go back to the island to see if they were there with the tribe of Croatoans. It was later discovered lots of the same gear the colonist had from the Roanoke colony on the island of Croatoa by archiologist.

The Croatoan natives took them in and sheltered them on the island - descendants' DNA has shown that they joined the indian tribe, assimilated and even had babies with them. They didn't "go" anywhere. They survived.

Flight 19 was found in 1999. They ran out of fuel. How they all lost their bearing remains a mystery though. The Royal Commission into Marie Celeste explains it. The ship was carrying alcohol & gun powder. It was normal practice in hot weather for crews hauling alcohol to follow the ships in a tethered lifeboat. The rope broke. They even found the broken rope attached to the stern. Marie Celeste never was a mystery, it's just an urban myth. The others l really have no idea. Hope this is of some use.

It’s not the Galapagos Campaign, it’s the Gallipoli Campaign. The Galápagos Islands are off the coast of South America, and Gallipoli was in the Ottoman Empire

hi Matthew, you made an error in your 1st example of the 5th Norfolk Battalion. You said they disappeared while fighting in the 'Galapagos' which is in the South Pacific Ocean when you should have said Gallipoli which is in the Dardenelles in Turkey where they were fighting during the 1st World War. While the Roanoke disappearance sounds awesome at first glance, I think the solution is very simple. The colonist on Roanoke used to live on a small island nearby, where they had a good relationship with the natives. When John White left them, he told them to carve a Maltese cross into a tree if something were to happen to them. When he returned, he did not find the cross, but he did find the word Croatoan. And that, my friends, just happened to be the name of the island where the colonist came from. Plus, White intended to go there to look for them, but was stopped by bad weather. So no one actually went there to look for the colonists. People aren't really "missing" if you don't bother go looking for them.

Yeah, that would make a lot of sense. I love a good mystery, but caring the word Croatoan into a tree rather than a Maltese cross (indicating trouble), and there being a tribe of friendly natives called Croatoans nearby makes it seem likely they left peacefully to live with the natives. As for why they went to live with the natives, we can only speculate. But there were hostile natives in the area too, so maybe they simply went there for protection.

There's a really cool play in Manteo, NC regarding this. Notice how Matt said that John was 'supposed to return a year later with supplies'? Yeah, it actually took him like 2 or 3 years--there was a war going on in the UK; I forget which one. So the colonists back in NC were starving without food, etc, so they did what they had to in order to survive--join hands with the native peoples. Highly recommended play, if you ever find yourself in the Outer Banks!!

How are you, Mathew? I really enjoyed watching several of your posts this morning. My sister in law came up missing in 1983, but we were fortunate enough to get her body back along with 4 others that had all been murdered and put under water in 1984. I had dropped everything in my life to look for her until she was found. Most people don't get theirs back. God at least gave her back to us. Thank you for doing these stories . It raises awareness. I hope you are doing well. You really are a remarkable man. I, also, suffer depression. But I'm above ground and so its a good day. Believe.

Well, they didn't have food, and when settlers later met the natives on Croatoan Island not too far from there, they noticed that there seemed to be an odd propensity toward blue eyes and light skin for that particular group of natives. That's not to say it happened peacefully, but with only the one skeleton found, fusion seems more likely than eradication.
