*Please note - most of the castle is closed at night and visitors are advised to proceed with consideration and caution in those areas that are open...
Join the GVC crew as they head to Northumberland to stay at Chillingham castle, England’s (and possibly the world’s!) most haunted castle. Fortified for Edward I’s stay on his way to confront William Wallace at the battle of Falkirk, and home to gruesome torture devices for Edward’s unfortunate prisoners…as well as the supernatural…

Sir Humphry is an old friend I once took to the Crimea as a battlefield tour guide. He pointed out a Russian cannon at the Malakoff Redoubt just outside Sevastapol and said he had the other identical one on the lawn at Chillingham. And so he has! When I asked him how many ghosts he has in the castle he airily replied "standing room only in the dining room"! A wonderful host in a fantastic castle packed full of interesting paraphinalia.

I live in Northumberland and have been to Chillingham several times. First time I took an SLR film camera, no problems, second time it was a digital camera, it stopped working as I entered the main doors battery flat. However as I left the batteries were once more fully charged?? I hope the staff told you all about John Sage or DRAGFOOT as he was called he was the torturer of the castle? He was nothing more than a sadistic murderer.

Awesome video, guys, you've got a new fan! It was cool to see the statues of the heroic Kings, when we visited the Castle of Coucy in France, we only saw the niches where the statues once stood. I also really liked your narration about that first licence to crenelate 😁

The 'torture chamber' is nothing of the sort! It's just set up as such as some sort of tourist attraction. I have an old guide to the castle that states the room was actually used as a stables.

Thanks Mark - our ghost version (fun) clarifies this point - the implements are very real though. But the location of the original torture Chamber as you quite correctly point, out was under the Minstrels Gallery we believe

@@govisitcastles There is no evidence that Iron Maidens ever existed/were used. When you think about it, it would be a pretty pointless (there is a pun there somewhere) way to extract information from anyone. On the other hand, sources say that they were Germanic and not Medieval. The first mention of one is by a guy in the 1700s, who claimed one was used in 1515. It was later discovered he had made the whole story up. So, who knows? The Germans certainly had a spike free device, like a barrel, but it was not a Maiden.
@govisitcastles

@@hogwashmcturnip8930 agreed, although there is evidence that they were in use pre-medieval times as 'oven-like chests with iron spikes'!

It's a great castle and I've stayed their 3 times, 5 nights each time. Yes it's haunted but don't believe most of the stories you hear about this place, there's absolutely no evidence to back it up. Everything in the castle has been brought in, nothing is original to the castle, and I'm pleased you stated that the so called 'torture chamber' was in fact an 'Under-croft'. It was never a torture chamber.
@govisitcastles
@govisitcastles 2 жыл бұрын
I think legend has it that the torture chamber was underneath what's now the Minstrel's Gallery/Café. It's a great place to stay and a beautiful part of the country to explore

@@govisitcastles Correct but it's never been confirmed if there was a torture chamber or not. As for the oubliette, I know the owners can and have been in there and have several pieces of proof with photographs taken over the years and video.

I believe the bones under the dungeon were carbon datet and testet and found to be those of a young girl from that time period. The entrance road along the castle wall still has chips of human bone embeded in it, also the lake was drained and quite a few human bones were found, they say the bodies of murdered Scots prisoners were thrown in there?

Do you mean the OUBLIETTE? If so it is a pit under a dungeon where people were thrown and forgotten, basically left to starve to death! Even after death they were left there to rot! Nice company for later "guests"
