Regardless from him being right on many instances, I find him obnoxious and overreaching. Posting unfavorable information on a totalitarian regime where you happen to make your livelihood? I mean, what did he expect? A humanitarian award from the CCP? Complaining about a cop raiding his fridge and using his glasses on the internet? Maybe he should have told the hicks in person their behavior wasn't appreciated instead of being a L.B. about it on a Podcast. I've seen my share of Ashanti antics living in Parisian suburbs, so this is not new to me. There just isn't any free speech in China, and living in Asia it saddens me to say that racism towards darker-skinned people is rampant.

I love how Winston handles this interview, basically gives the person an opportunity to just tell their story the way they want to tell it, asking only small questions to help the person clarify what they are talking about - and then once the story is finished he outlines with them why their story is important to put out there and what implications it has. A very nice change from the usual interviews you see where the interviewer feels the need to make themselves useful and ask pointless questions every few sentences the person says that either have an obvious answer or are irrelevant and take away from the actual important things the person is trying to say.

Jeffry has my respect. He handled a difficult and intimidating situation so well. He stood his ground and didn't falter. Where the police wronged him, he made this clear to them. As a black man, this was very interesting on many levels. But I have a problem. Though I lived in HK and Macau for many years, even with a Ch gf, the behavior and ignorance of Ch people (a by-product of the CCP) disgusts me to no end. I have an ambivalence toward them and a hatred for the CCP. The intro to the video was mind-boggling. I could feel the prejudice, could see the stupidity in the responses and attitudes toward this African man. Thanks Winston for an interesting guest.

@___________ Sure. I haven't lived in Africa since I was little but you definitely can't say that about any country. While all countries have some level of racism/colorism, some countries have anti-racist people who are willing to intervene on your behalf, even at their expense. Bit off-topic. If you lived in Africa, why haven't you had an African gf. Were you simply not interested? Its just that you put the word "never" in bold, I feel like there's a story there.
@abdiganisugal825
@abdiganisugal825 3 жыл бұрын
@___________ Wow, that's a quick reply. My point was there are no perfect countries, all countries have their own challenges and histories. However, countries deal with their problems in different ways. I read a story about an African family being kicked out of their home in Norway because their income reached threshold. I can't find the link, but I'll tell you the story for now. If I find again I'll post it. This family lived in council housing, and were notified by the council to exit the premises in very short amount of time. I believe it was 48 hours. What was supposed to happen was they were supposed to get a month or two find a new rental, or they were supposed to be given a hotel they could rent temporarily but that didn't happen. Through no fault of their own they were kicked out onto the street one day. In response to all this, their former neighbour starts to post on social media and starts a crowdfunding campaign to collect funds for her friend. Luckily, she was able to acquire funding so that the family can rent a new place in short order. Remember this is all happening in Norway, the country that presents the Nobel Peace Prize. The paragon for human rights. This story should be enough to demolish the notion that perfect countries exist. So then, how likely is this to happen in other countries, particularly in China. From what Jeffry has said, my view is sticking up for your neighbour is a dangerous thing to do. After all, he made a video about a Ghanaian man not being able to get treatment, a rather tame issue. Now, I have had the privilege of having Chinese friends, I have never known anything but good from them. I would expect them to help me, if I got into some legal trouble for example. So it can't be said Chinese people inherently unkind, it would be both ridiculous and racist to make such a claim. However, in an environment where this kind of criticism is met with such severity, I would be scared to lift a finger to help people too unless they were either blood relatives or lifelong friends. To conclude, what I take issue with it is this idea that countries are all the same because they all have problems. For example, there are plenty of African countries that would like to control their population, but can't because frankly they just too poor or too backwards technologically to pull it off. Chinese system has it strengths but it has its weaknesses too. This is one of them. To use an example of the US, the 1st Amendment means that the government isn't able to stop speech but what has allowed especially in the age of social media, is the proliferation of fake news. Imho, there are no solutions, only trade-offs. Finally, for the gf thing, it was just a little curiosity. That fact that you lived in Africa is more than enough validation for me. Many people just go for a safari holiday and they're done with Africa, but obviously Africa is a more than a safari. I respect your choice to remain chaste. Personally, I don't sleep around either so we're of the same mind.
