When we came to China over 10 years ago, prices were low. Rent, food, entertainment, it was all very cheap. Now, prices have reached levels surpassing much of the USA. We make some comparisons, and explain why this is happening.

What you say really hit me. My mother try to force me to "force my bro to buy a house" . When he says no and I got a government job my mother force me to buy a house. I was on Grad wage. She didn't care about my well-being. Everything you said about loan and what not is EXACTLY WHAT HAPPEN. I have access to all my siblings account and she wants me to siphon all their money. I didn't do it. Her reason was that all her friend's do it. She is comparing her wealth with her wealthier friends and relatives. I felt bad and finally gave in and purchase an affordable place. After I did it she then rant on how come I haven't got my 2nd property while at the same time comparing me to her wealthier relatives kids. After enduring such unkind words for a year I EXPLODE. Not to mention she keeps ranting on how I stole money from her for the deposit. She didn't remember she force me to use her money. She knew what was going on when she had to sign stat decs and everything. SOMEHOW THIS MENTALITY WENT ALL THE WAY TO AUSTRALIA. 😠

I turned her down. Now she's trying again, but I turn her down flat, no discussion the housing is obviously in a bubble, I'm not interested. Guangzhou is still very cheap to live in and more modern than Shenzhen, Shenzhen is the most expensive city in China at the moment, even more expensive than Shanghai, not because it is any better than any other first tier cities and second tier cities. If you want to afford the life in Shenzhen, you have to be someone working in the biggest tech companies like Tencent or Huawei or Xiaomi etc. Or work in the financial sector of Shenzhen, which is also getting paid a lot.

That is crazy...here in germany, even in the cities, it is about the same with 60squaremeters for over 1000,- $, but this is as extreme as it gets and that with a clean, working supply of water, etc. Sure you can go more crazy as well, but usually even in cities, you get a tidy, well working flat for under that price...a little outside the city centers, you are going down to about 600-700 and in small towns it goes down to 400 cold. I am living in a small apartment for even 350 bucks Warm...so everything paid already(heating, water, garbage, etc) Even a middleclass european guy wouldnt really accept to afford such high prices combined with such low living standards.

@mapesdhs597
@mapesdhs597 5 жыл бұрын
David, you are correct, only Eastern Europe atm seems to care about maintaining its cultural integrity and stable borders. With regard to rising costs in China, the govt. aims for a minimum 7%/pa increase (it's been higher in some years), with job growth of 23M/pa just to maintain civil stability (preventing dissatisfaction amid the young is critical). Even at 7% though, ShanghaiGoat's quote of 3000rmb ten years ago would be about 6000 today, so it being 20K shows there has been a significant increase beyond mere inflation. Officially, the annual inflation rate has on average been much lower than this, supposedly less than 2.2%/pa over the past 10 years, but this doesn't match reality at all, showing how the system is distorted in various ways, via currency manipulation and other methods. Some hold the false belief that China now has a market economy, or that it has adopted Capitalism (or elements of it). The only thing China has absorbed is a degree of free enterprise, but that is not Capitalism; the latter, at its core, is property rights, free speech, don't lie and don't steal (the foundations for honest and trustworthy trade, hence the connection to the Protestant work ethic and the strong early rise of the US); free enterprise is just the ability to exploit opportunity, it implies nothing about the morals and ethics of trade, hence why free enterprise can coexist so easily with scams & fraud. China does not have property rights, it certainly doesn't have free speech, and with cultural traits that sustain elements of corruption, deception, fraud and scams at numerous levels, it's far removed from honesty and truth in trade. How one can do business in China could certainly be described as free in various ways, but it's much more like the old wild west than a sustainable system based on trust. Politically, China is a communist variant; economically, it's something else entirely (no word for it atm), but it definitely isn't Capitalist or a free market, notions which effectively died in the West with the creation of the Fed, the emergence of Welfare and the colossal rise of national debt (all of which are a form of theft and a violation of the non-aggression principle). Indeed, many elements of how Western economies are run today are if anything more communistic than the way China operates atm, with enormous state intervention and control, the money supply artificially sustained by state borrowing, etc. One thing is certain, the Chimerica mutual dependency is in a very unhealthy state, a structure of trade on the back of cheap oil which allowed global economies to flourish for half a century. Much of it was artificial, on all sides, while traditions of saving and frugal behavior within civilian populations were erroded (Spend! Spend! Spend!). In the West today, few people understand what saving even means; most believe it refers to just the standard interest received on cash investments (which is horribly wrong of course, the interest doesn't even cover inflation, especially when base rates are so low). Private debt is particularly severe in places like the UK, (around $2.2 trillion for a population of 65m) but it's generally bad everywhere, while state debt means resources are stretched far beyond capacity (proving that importing hordes of migrants is a terrible idea, they disproportionately add to the burden on services and systems, along with so many other problems). It's a curious thing that China hasn't succumbed to the diseases of political correctness and cultural marxism that have so infested the West, yet it has ended up with large debts via other routes, with potential for future problems of a different order. Trust is perhaps the biggest long term problem, people have to believe that the system can sustain; in the West, most people are too brainwashed to understand it can't (so they bumble along, deluding themselves into thinking they're going to have a cosey retirement pension when some simple math shows they've not and never will pay anywhere near enough into the system to cover the cost), but in China the dynamics of this have yet to play out. Ian.

My Beijing one bedroom 60square meter apartment in the suburbs was 6500rmb a month. (About 1,000usd) [In my hometown in Michigan USA I could rent 2 entire houses for that.] And the landlord insisted on 6-months rent at a time. AND HE KEPT MY DEPOSIT WHEN I MOVED OUT. Local food, public transportation, and daily necessities are cheap, but cafe-coffee, bar-beer, and western fast-food are the same as any major city. So basically you save on a lot of things but then you just turn around and spend those savings on other things.

Even in the US if you happen to live in an inherited house, drive a used car, leave the house unlit (go traipsing around with a flashlight) and unheated except for the room you use at a particular time, have no spouse or crumb-snatchers (read: kids) to feed, hardly eat out at all (microwave meals) and drink only water, you still have to watch the money very closely or you'll find yourself in a bind. I'm in the South in the country and that's the cheapest place in the US to live price wise--how other people pay for half the stuff they have plus have others to support plus have bad habits to pay for like drinking or smoking--I don't see how anyone does it without help. I can think of so many other Asian countries to live n retire. I have alot of experience w China. Can't trust the people. U saw that stunt by the rich Chinese family in Sweden right? They were well off n still tried to cheat the hostel n then created a scene. These two have basically a China women fetish. Plus since they live there, they cant even come close to telling the true story or they would be jailed n then deported. so all the videos r 10% of the truth just out of self preservation. It's crazy people think this is objective in any way. No other countries have people think of foreigners as either friend or foe not even Russia

Australian Real Estate rules have been established that Chinese investors may only purchase new housing, no existing. These rules are ignored by many sellers and investors. Many financial commentators predict a forty percent fall in prices. I hope it will be closer to ninety percent like the Japanese market since 1995.

are you guys comparing one of the most expensive chinese cities with the average american (suburban/rural) rent? And comparing fine western dining (cuz apparently you think the $2 chinese meals will kill westerners..) with dollar menu? I lived in Shanghai, LA and NYC, let's make a major city to major city comparison here.. a single metro ride is $0.5 in shanghai vs. $2.75 in NY and $1.75 in LA (which goes nowhere); cellphone bill costs $10 in China and $40+ in the US; you can get food as cheap as $2 in a sit-down restaurant in China, but at least $10+tax&tips in America; have you guys just been living in China for too long and forgot how damn expensive america can be? the small Chinese cities can be dirt cheap too but you guys think it's too inconvenient for people who refuse to speak Chinese. so there you go.

You are forgetting point he meant. Sure China is cheaper in many ways but you have to pay premium for quality service, hygiene in food, higher/standard facility comparible to other countries etc. I haven't been to the USA, but I'm from the UK which has worse food value compare to USA pound per pound. I've only been to China once and also visited Shanghai during that time. The food on the upper market restaurants is kinda comparable to UK standards, also pricing (not the fancy ones). There are also ones that are way cheaper one that we ate in Shanghai (not in the upper areas) that was worth the price and amount (around 1/4 to almost 1/3 cheaper compared to UK). Collectively, food quality, hygiene and service in (whole) China is hit or miss. Though damn I wish the majority of the people who are doing business really take matters more seriously in terms of service, quality and hygiene for the better experience for everyone (not end up food poisoning). The housing standard there is, way below average on UK standards at least of what I can compare.

Sorry man but your wrong, the USA has phone plans that start out as low as $5. As far as public transport yes it’s more expensive but it’s cheaper to drive in the USA vs China. Plus we have passes that reduce the cost of rides. As far as food is concerned Chinese food is good but it’s not regulated at all. For the vast majority of people this is fine but it’s still sketchy for a first world country.
@djinn666
@djinn666 5 жыл бұрын
A car is not necessary in Shanghai, nor is western-style food. No matter how you slice it, public transport is going to be cheaper than having your own car, even just accounting for gas money. As for food, you can cook your own food for much cheaper in Shanghai, and if you don't have time, there's convenience stores that sell ready-to-eat stuff like steamed buns for 2 yuan. It might take 3 or 4 to fill you up, but that's still about a quarter the price of a pre-made sandwich in an American grocery store. I've never heard of anyone get sick from eating those either. Of all the things you need to live, rent is pretty much the only thing in China that's anywhere close to the US in cost. I can get a decent apartment in the center of Shanghai for 7500 yuan per month, which is about $1100, whereas it's at least $3000 for a similarly-sized apartment in SF. To get a $1100 apartment, I have to go 50 miles outside the city to Fairfield.

I think the comparisons the guys did in this video are valid. I used to live and work in NY for many years and prices are accessible. Big city and good living regulations. I used to live in Shanghai for 2 years and villas in the back of my complex building were millions of millions that compared at that time for the same amount of money i can buy a regular apartment in Mid town Manhattan and another one in Queens. or a house with backyard in Forest Hill. The topic was about prices in the city. If u go to a small town in Zhejiang province won't be cheap as a small town in Virginia. About the food. In USA there are a lot of options and prices but you eat without fear to be intoxicated or with the feeling to be cheated for bad food. In China you have to pay high prices for a regular or average food quality and even like that there are some risks to be cheated. Now i live in HK and the prices are crazy and ridiculous too. Anyway, i agreed than China is more expensive than USA.

I agree that lots of things in China are more expensive than in the US, especially housing. *However, some apples-to-apples calibration needs to be taken into account.* Shenzhen/Shanghai/Beijing/Guangzhou/HK prime locations = New York/LA/SF prime locations. For the same quality of finish and space, I'd bet the pricing is within 10-15%. I would be interested to see 2nd/3rd tier Chinese cities ranked against 2nd/3rd tier US cities though. Hangzhou/Tianjin/Suzhou/Nanjing vs. Chicago/Houston/DC Qingdao/Chengdu/Shenyang/Jinan vs. Austin/Dallas/Atlanta/Boston No question that prices for everything in China have been on a tear the last 2 decades though.

Any Chinese investors read this contact me bring your bags of Chinese money and we can make a bomb.

My branded electronics (TV, Computers, Phones) all cost as much if not more, my clothing costs the same price, my car was A LOT more. While rent is cheap (2,500 for a decent house), last year it was 2,000. I can honestly see this being 3,000 before the end of the decade. I import a lot of stuff such as cosmetics, eye care and shampoo. It's extremely expensive. They are spot on in this video. If you live like a Chinese person you will find it cheap, if you want to live a western lifestyle it's more expensive. China is expensive and people are making a lot more money here than they were a decade ago, some of my colleagues salaries are surprisingly high even at local companies.

Probably because you import a bunch of stuff. Why import cosmetics and shampoo? If I was in America and I only used Japanese shampoo, it's going to be more expensive.

Eventually, the housing bubble will have to pop or deflate. Which will have side effects, of course. But at least housing will be affordable again.

As long as the housing hasn't been ruined by bombs. States with high debts often used war as a means of writing them off. Also means they can push through harsh measures to increase taxes, etc.

Yeah, no. The Chinese government isn't afflicted with the particular kind of insanity that would deliberately invite a foreign power to bomb a bunch of Chinese cities into oblivion just to relieve their economy of some surplus housing. I suppose I could see them ordering largely-unoccupied housing units torn down by government fiat, though.

In reality, its more expensive to live anywhere in Asia if you live as a westerner. Very much you take for granted back home either is hard to get, restricted or expensive (or a combination of them all) in Asia. That’s just a fact. As a tourist you won’t notice it, but as soon as you want to settle down, your western lifestyle and mindset will catch up and start taking over your ideas, needs and decision-making, making it a lot more expensive than it cost for the locals and for many even be more expesive living in Asia then back home... most people don’t even realize it. A strange phenomenon among westerners in Asia.

Thats BS. I lived in Bangkok and I rented a luxury condo for 354$. With hardwood floors, nice kitchen, nice balcony. Swimming pool, fitness center, steam room and sauna etc. I lived on 1800$ a month their it would have been like living on 6000$ in a major us city. This was 2010-2013. Sure it wasn't in the city center but it was along mass transit lines and only a 20 min ride to the center.

Don't forget that for every yuan of debt, that is a yuan in somebody's bank account. This is the biggest division between the rich and the middle class, especially in a place like China. The middle class is practically defined by their ability to pay the mortgages owed to wealthy elites.

Codediporpal: Yes,and that 1 yuan would probably be in only 10% of fhe population's account. In fact the percentage os even less. China a country that has a history of revolution and revolt will find in the near future a large segment of the population agitaing for change!

Wow, those prices are insane. In my city in Northwest Ohio you can rent a very nice luxury apartment or a big house for $1000-1500. The average is more like $700 for a smaller house or a decent apartment. I'm renting a couple rooms from a friend who owns a trailer while I save for a house -- the size of which is pretty comparable to a very small house. My portion of the rent is $300 (2000 rmb) and I make $70k+ per year. I can't imagine spending three times that much and only making $8k. And then of course most of the other expenses around here are way better than most places. Cheap gas, cheap fresh food, relatively cheap electronics..
