Wow you guys, thanks so much for this video. I've said in other comments on other videos, I spent one year in China and I have a pretty sour attitude towards China. But after watching your videos and watching how you really have come to accept China and everything in it (which is something I could never think of doing), I want to go again to give it another chance. I learned a lot of the language the first year, and met and talked pretty often with a Canadian who had been there for twenty years, and he gave us a lot of insight into how China really is, just like you guys. So I've heard a lot about this, but your guys' attitude living in China encourages me, and these steps help me realize it really is me that needs to start adjusting so I can start accepting. That's so great. So I really appreciate the videos and commentary, and I really really love your drone shots and driving around. That's really how you get to see China, and there's always something different and weird and new happening every day you go out. Something weird, questionable, shocking, but part of the culture. Thanks.

Lived in Korea for three years and contemplating whether to continue there. Your videos have been very helpful. I know you guys probably are criticized for being critical but I really appreciate your raw opinions. I think in Korea it is kind of hard to talk honestly about life as a foreigner since it can personally offend the people in your lives and talking about struggles is seen as weak. So once again, thank you for sharing your views.

I'm not so sure about the hospitality comment around 11:00. I recently just came home (November 4th) from China after 3 years living and teaching at a university. Two weeks before I came back, I lost my passport while taking a train from Nanjing (where I was teaching) to Shanghai (where I was flying home from). Basically I had only enough money to pay for my new passport and visa since I had sent all money to my Canadian bank account in which my card had expired over a year ago and couldn't use. I was only able to afford a hostel for 6 days out of the 14 I was there with the extra cash I had. After 6 days I 400rmb left to last me for the next 8 days before I could claim my new passport. I told the hostel manager I could only afford a few more nights and he straight up said "Don't worry about the money for the rent." He had seen me stressed over the situation for the last 6 days and told me he and his wife had no issues letting me stay for free to help ease my stress. I also hadn't eaten in 2 days and he came by the hostel room I was in with two bags of groceries (fruit, vegetables, bread and western snacks which I thought was adorable). His wife even took me to Suzhou for an overnight trip to help me take my mind off of things. They went above amd beyond to make me feel as warm and welcome as possible. They were strangers to me and I to them but they helped me and I can honestly say, I felt more at home with them than I ever did in Nanjing over the last 3 years. I will never forget them. I had no money but I felt I was treated better than those who knew I had money. I am home now and thinking of what kind of gifts I can send them for the amazing hospitality they had showed me. I'm not saying every Chinese person is like this. But please don't say every Chinese person will treat you differently if you have no money because clearly that is a very thoughtless comment.

I think I'm lucky, from the sense that I don't think I have ever really fallen out of the honeymoon into the frustrated part, but into the acknowledgement and acceptance. And I think this is because my level of Chinese was higher than the other foreigners around me, and I saw them going through this frustrated part and and knowing I didn't want to feel/act like they did, because they were being beyond ridiculous most of the time. I've definitely had a China day though, but those are far apart, thankfully.

Great video! An accurate description of what life has to offer you in China, both good and bad, and to some extent in other countries as well. It's been a pleasure accompanying you guys through your four stages and a real relief to be not the only one struggeling to get "used" to all the crazy and different here. In the end it is as you said, you will not be able to change people arround you, but you can definitely spot positive changes in behaviour here and there. Loved the drone shots and scenery! Keep the awesome work up!

Very nice video guys! I like how you describe your KZfaq experience. I've been youtubing from China for almost 4 years and the thing you do mainly focus on during your stay is major differences. As you said in the beginning everything is just amazing after a while you get used to stuff and start seeing the negative aspects. After you've seen that you realise that no country is perfect and maybe offer more communication between your own country and China.

Awesome, i see how your opinion have changed throughout the years as well as your maturity. No place is a Dreamland, period. Anyway i think you are the only reliable China-related youtubers out there... I have returned to America for I don't know how long, after four years, off and on, in China. America is not as great as I had remembered. And in America, I don't have such strong negative feelings about China as I had when living there. Perspective, I guess. I have been having an ongoing debate with my cousin who lives in Spain about being content in your surroundings, wherever you may be. A good way to be, if you can manage it. Some of us are perpetual malcontents. I never had a real honeymoon experience with China, nor did I experience such deep frustrations either. I have largely lived in a bubble created by my wife. I have had my complaints for sure...but usually I was more apt to laugh at the things I found strange or even disagreeable in China. China is a big country, and I am sure it has many places of great scenic beauty...but what I have seen can't compare with North America. And I must be the only person in the world who doesn't find Chinese food "delicious". But even an old man can appreciate the many beautiful women one sees in China. The big cities are amazing. I love the high speed trains. The best thing about China is the people. They have been almost without exception welcoming and friendly. I regret I didn't make more of my opportunities while living in China. I would recommend to anyone coming to China to learn the language and to dive in wholeheartedly. I wonder what the future holds for foreigners in China? I wonder what my future in China, however long or short it may be, holds for me? Good video, guys. Keep it up! Stay Awesome!

There is sort of a progression of being a expat, kinda like the stages of grief. This is one of the stages. But after awhile, it's the same as home. You still have to wake up, put your pants on one leg at a time and go to work. Now, 4 countries later, I pretty much just wish for AI robots because people everywhere suck and no escape from stupidity. First time I return to the US after several years abroad, I hated it. I kept thinking, where the hell did all these foreigners come from? Why are people more slovenly dressed than 4 years ago? Why do I feel like a criminal, always looking over my shoulder for some cop to bust me for whatever minor violation.

@Serpentza: I think it's because you, and Laowhy' have a love of both nature, and riding bikes. I think that's what saved it for you, otherwise when the Honey-crash came, you'd be in a state of Permanently-Pissed-Off! I'm glad though. Your vids' teach us more of what we'd needed to know travelling there, and not knowing what questions to ask, or what to bring, or do. *_And what to avoid!!!_*

Those stages apply to frequent travellers to China also. I definitely romanticised it on the first couple trips, and thus also blindly defended the negatives that many people judged China by. However after a few more trips and a decade later the honeymoon is long gone and I'm at the acceptance/reality part (still with some frustration in the mix too though). Even though I'm no longer amazed by everything I see and the country feels very "familiar" now, China is varied and big enough to keep me coming back for more. Oh and we don't all just go on tours to Shanghai and Beijing, give us some credit for being adventurous also ;-)

Love this video! Everything you said about the 4 stages is true for foreigners coming to Japan as well. Of course, the things that are good and bad are different compared to Japan, but you go through those phases here as well. Nicely done and said!

Ya know what's funny , 95% of Upstate, western and the Southern Tier of New York looks exactly what you guys are biking thru, but the millions of people who live in NYC, and the other downstate counties would never consider that area the "Real New York"

Guess I dont fit the mold. I have been in china now for 10 years. I lived in Shenzhen, Chongqing, and now in Suzhou. I can say I am as happy today as I was when I first arrived. I do have taken one year to study the language in South West University in Chongqing, and being able to have basic conversations helps allot. But yes, China, and Asia in general is not for everybody.

This specific and (enough) moving episode decided me to follow your channel ! Thank you a lot for all what you do in helping others, and me the first, to get a bit of understanding about this incredible and so different country and civilization.

What about the deep denial ignore it and it goes away phase? I'm always amazed by how many people in Shenzhen live a lifestyle 100% like they are still in America. Learn no English, Hang out with foreigners, only eat at foreign owned restaurants. Here in Guangzhou we don't have such a large foreigner community so a lot of those things don't exist really.

Im surprised china doesn't have nonviolent prisoners pick up the trash, like in the US

Loved the drone shot at the end! Just got back to Kunming from a a Five day journey round Jinghong, Yuanjing areas so in process got a fair bit of mountain driving in, great opportunity to see some beautiful scenery.
