American warehouse retailer Costco opened its first physical store in China on August 27. Low prices and a lenient return policy drew crowds of aggressive shoppers to the Shanghai store, which was forced to close early on its opening day amid chaotic scenes.

By the way, Costco was considered an essential business by Americans, earning the rep points in china population.

Notice it is a lot of older people acting like this - this is a generational thing in China. The age group who grew up under strict Mao policies with no outside influence are a little more crazy when it comes to things like this. Many youth today, having traveled extensively and been exposed to a whole different China than their parents/grand parents are more orderly. As generations slowly are replaced with new generations, social norms change. I can already see it happening with younger generations in China and abroad.

The benefit of patience applies to a lot of hype, shopping, and queue cases. Don't want to waste time queuing doing nothing for plane? Just play some puzzle games until the queue ends, then waltz in smoothly as if you're a business class passenger. Don't want to pay super expensive for high end smartphone? Just buy last year's model or wait 1 year. Don't want to queue for lunch? Eat at 2 PM instead of 12 PM or 1 PM like everybody else. Don't want to get stuck in new store opening hype? Wait 2-3 months.

Not modeled or shaped by our government but by our own decisions. The freedom that our country provides and our free will, are blessings in their own right. everyone in the comments: why is everyone acting like it's black friday? because in china 🇨🇳 most stores do not allow you to return things. second, almost all foreign products have a heavy tariff in china so everything is like doubled the price. e.g. here in Canada an Audi Q7 costs roughly CAD$70 000, but with lots of tariffs and taxes in china it could easily cost up to CAD$150 000
