China is engaged in a secret one-hundred year marathon to overtake the United States in global economic and military might, with a goal to supplant the United States as the world’s dominant power by 2049, argues Michael Pillsbury in a timely new book, The Hundred-Year Marathon: China’s Secret Strategy to Replace America as the Global Superpower. Pillsbury contends that U.S. economic, science, and trade policies have played a sometimes unwitting role in contributing to China’s ascent, and argues that the United States needs to implement a more competitive strategic response to China’s economic mercantilism “as it really is, and not as we might wish it to be.” Listen to the lively discussion regarding the current state of U.S.-China economic, trade, and national security relations and an exploration of how the U.S.-China competition can and should be structured to generate win-win outcome for both nations and the broader global economy.

india also have similar ambition to overtake US maybe they call it as "two hundred year marathon with US"?

But the key difference is that China doesn't scream this ambition out loud every so often inspite being much closer to the goal and India can't stop shouting about becoming a superpower even when it's far away from the goal.

I highly doubt that there is any structure strategy in India that even comes close to Chinese model for the better or the worse.

India has already concured west specially usa by its spirituality , India will never have that ambition of marathon with economy thing . But Indian spirituality has entered western man's heart , just as it had entered in china in buddist era . Unfortunately Indian themselves don't know it , they were unaware of their nature , but all thing will put in place in future.

the absolute assertion of this guy on the us government's non involvement in china affairs makes one wonder how can an academic like him be so sure of what's going on inside the government, things that presidents don't even publicly say. or perhaps he is just using the chinese strategy of "saying there's no strategy" to say that there's no american hegemony?

Wow, so many good post on this site about the US, China and Russia. If China continues to spend money on its Military like Russia did, along with its other domestic problems, China will implode. China has an aging population, young people that want to leave and live in other countries, high unemployment, too many people, it a communist country, which everyone know has a history of not working, look at Russia, Cuba, the old East Germany and Vietnam, Communism never works in a third world country. I have been to China twice, both times for 30 days, which was a total of two months, both in the winter and summer. I toured from Southern China, Hunan to Northern China, Beijing to Shanghai and loved every minute of it, I could not get enough of the country, its people, food and culture. I went to all of the tourist spots, The Great Wall, The Forbidden city, The Temple of Heaven, the night cruse at Shanghai unreal, better than the sky line of New York. I spoke to people in the big cities and the countryside, the people in the country offered me tea, hospitality and put up with my very bad Mandarin Chinese, I should have learned more or better, but did not think I would ever use it. China has a great deal of potential, hard working people, beautiful land, outstanding food, the best and is a developing country. I hope a war can be avoided, because the US and China were allies during WWll against the Japanese. Additionally, no countries will benefit from a war between the US and China, only the Russians will benefit and god knows we do not want that to occur. I see long lines at the Chinese consulate of foreigners wanting to tour China and I believe the rest of the world should tour and visit China, its a fascinating land and country. We the US and they the Chinese should be doing business together and explore space, the true last frontier and work together for the benefit of mankind and so our children will have a place to live should we, humans destroy our planet EARTH. I have said my two cents worth and some of you may not agree, but unlike communist countries we here in the US have freedom of speech and some of us were in the US Military to keep it that way. In closing learn to eat with chop sticks, learn Chinese, tour China and enjoy yourself, its a very small world and its getting smaller all of the time.
