1/ Hardware: China is making the cheapest and available hardware VR and AR headsets to make the Chinaverse come to live. Especially AR will be big in China because of its use cases for cities and retail.
2/ Platforms: The big 4 tech companies of China has all the layers and building blocks available to build the Metaverse platforms.
3/ Communication: China is leading on 5G and in 20230 expect 6G to be years ahead on the West. Because 6G will make the Metaverse immersive as expected for good user experience
4/ Regulation: China has banned crypto-trading and mining, and NFTs are not allowed to trade with cryptocurrency. But most important is that Beijing has put VR and Metaverse into their 5 year plans and have not cracked down on VR yet.

1/ Gaming and entertainment: Tencent and China is the biggest gaming community in the world. But most important is all about entertainment and events where lots of people gather in virtual world. NFTs is limited in trading in China, and much more used as collectible than as trading.
2/ Retail and Fashion: China is leading the world in New Retail where online and offline are merged, where e-commerce is already going full speed ahead in the virtual world.
3/ Industrial push of the Metaverse: This is to support China's self-Reliance of industries that matter for Beijing. This is why VR is a big push for China...
4/ Education, Work, Travel, Culture: China is experimenting with VR and AR to make cities and industries more attractive and will help raise the productivity of work and making cities smart
30:56 User Adoption are going to be definitive to make the metaverse ubiquitous
1/ Content: China has no lack of content, but do lack studios to make ideas come alive. Much of the content are driven by trying out things, and this is going to be China's advantage
2/ Users: Gen Z in China is adopting new virtual worlds faster and more open to create and participate. Especially the trend of virtual influencers shows how China seeks to make the virtual world look as much alike to the real world as possible.
3/ Real Name registration is driving adoption of metaverse in China, because people in China's metaverse are known.
4/ Digital currencies: CBDCs could be the big boost for China's metaverse as trading can happen in virtual world with no limitations as it is supported by the People's Bank of China.

On high speed communication, China is now talking about rolling out 5.5G. This will take China close to 6G level even before 6G technology is available. This will let China roll out the full metaverse experience much earlier than any other country.

As you do in reality, pick out the style and color and size and so on, you can be assured of the purchase. .In the virtual world, as far as I know, many rich people in China have bought virtual plots in good locations, because people can build malls, entertainment places, restaurants and so on in good locations just like in real life. In a clothing store, for example, you come in and buy clothes. .

Metaverse transforms internet applications into 3D, that's great. Mirror the real world is even a greater concept that enhance and enlarge the imagination of real applications. The world would indeed changing faster than we thought.

Baidu has its own cloud computing service - Baidu Cloud. Metaverse can be used as well in manufacturing space - R&D, product development, simulation and life cycle

Pascal, what is your take on Open AI's ChatGPT, Google's Brad when compared with Baidu's ERNIE Bot?

I need to spend more time to make a comparison. But my first take is that I hear nobody outside of China even consider Baidu's ERNIE as part of the trend, which makes me believe we are just like with the metaverse going through a moment of 'hype' to get 'disillusioned' soon. In 6 months from now I might have to make a video about China's chatGPT to share that China has been making very useful progress where the rest of the world has fallen asleep. I will keep an eye on it.

Pascal, that’s a good insight. I like your thesis. Too bad in the west we are less informed about what China is doing with the metaverse. A metaverse, or better yet an Omniverse, that’s powered by CBDC certainly made it lot more doable than powered by cryptos. A first success story must come from whichever can seamlessly integrate the economy of the metaverse world with the economy of the real world. And the creativities involved to achieve such a feat must be breathtaking, even without completely revolutionize the way we do things.

Frankly speaking, I think Meta's metaverse is just a boring online multilayer game. For serious users, it doesn't provide a solution to a problem that we cannot solve with Zoom, Ecommerce, etc. Also, we want to access the tools and find what we want effeciently, instead of wasting time navigating the VR world. For gamers, it's boring because you can't shoot people and monsters in the Metaverse.

Given the choice, I would pick AR over VR any day. There is a small niche VR world I would like to play in: Louise Cha or the newer fairyland worlds imagined by modern writers. The writers will need to work closely with developers programmers to bring the writer's imaginary world to the screen.

In a virtual world where everyone enters with an avatar who are allowed to interact mutually, bullying as cyber bullying can be rampant and hard to control. In a virtual world where interaction is impossible or allowed, one can be lost easily and died of dehydration and starvation. There has to be some kind of governance and be control.

You're way out of your depth on this one Pascal lol That being said, it's way too early to say which metaverse (China or the West's version) will be the superior one. With Apple releasing their VR/XR headset soon, we'll see Meta step up their game to compete or they'll be buried by Apple once again with nothing to fall back on unless they some how get TikTok banned.

When new ways of living come up, we always seem to think they are stupid. I did that when Wechat came out. Now it's the most popular app in China.

@@PascalCoppens Not every new idea succeeds! Look at flying cars and jetpacks, for example. People thought VR headsets would have taken off years ago! There has to be an "evolution" to accepting something new. Virtual reality is just too far "out there" and away from normal reality for most people to make that jump. It has went from books, to movies, to video games, and that was a normal progression. But to wearing a headset and getting into virtual reality as a practice it's just not an easy progression. It takes you too far away from normal reality! I have a Quest headset. I've used it maybe a dozen times in 2 years. There will be people that embrace it, but those are the same types that got into Dungeons and Dragons and World of Warcraft. But that is where it stops. The rest of the world just won't like it.
