China's weakness: the Malacca Strait

Күн бұрынHow can a small strait threaten a global powerhouse like China🇨🇳? And why is the Malacca Strait so important for China and the rest of Asia and the World? 🌏
Through the Malacca Strait passes around 80% of Chinese oil, and that's also true for other Asian countries, like Japan, Korea and Taiwan. Therefore, this chokepoint is the most direct way from the Indian to the Pacific Ocean, and any blockade of this would spell disaster for the global economy. For these reasons this checkpoints holds a huge geopolitics and strategic meaning for China military.
The PRC has developed a strategy based on the build up of its navy and the expansion of foreign bases. On the one hand, the Chinese Navy has pushed for expanding its marine and amphibious capabilities, building aircraft carriers and well dock military vessels. On the other hand, Chinese strategist are boosting PRC presence abroad, by building bases on foreign soil. The logistic base in Djibouti as a case in point of this strategy, but also Gwadar in Pakistan and Hambantota in Sri Lanka are thought to become future bases.

I served in the Royal Australian Navy 30 years ago and transited the Straits of Malacca many times. The amount of traffic there was insane! We often could not keep up with all the radar contacts. Having said that, our radar systems had no computerisation and we had to do all calculations manually. Other ships our navy had at that time would not have had such issues though, being far more advanced. These days it’d be a walk in the park for them!

I have very fond memories of sitting at a yacht club in Lumut eating delicious noodles, paragliding from a beach in Penang, visiting the RAAF at the RMAF base at Butterworth and the massively warm welcome we got from the people in Kota Kinabalu! Chinas navy will grow larger but nothing to alarming. Chinas miltary expansion is simply down to the fact, that as its GDP grow so does the percentage of that GDP for military spending.

Actually, this video doesn’t do a very good job of explaining the PLAN’s buildup in the SCS. The alternative routes to Myanmar and Pakistan I can understand, but the PLAN is still bottled within the SCS by India’# control over Andaman Nicobar, and Australia’s control over the Northeastern section of the Indian Ocean.

Meanwhile they are starting conflicts with every neighbor they have. With Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia as enemies, backed by India, Australia, the UK, Japan, half a dozen other neighbors and the US, the Malacca Strait is impenetrable for the very limited blue water navy of China with the lack of air and land support unlike the alliance has. The isolated outposts would also be overrun quickly by the allies. China would be confined to its own shores...

Indonesia's geographic conditions can act as natural defense system. Archipelagic country with thousands of uninhabited islands, hundreds of active volcanoes, dozens of underwater tectonic rifts, many shallow waters and submerged shoals. This means in the emergency events, Indonesia may attack and kill any maritime trespassers who threatened her sovereignity, then play stupid and called it as natural disasters. As the contingencies, they also can blames the Malacca pirates for it while keep maintaining good diplomacy with the trespasser countries.

Seems like chinas biggest problem is going to maintaining supply lines through the Indian Ocean. It won’t take much for India to shut down their routes and pipelines and blockade their navy out of the Indian Ocean.

Should have mentioned India's base at Andaman Islands. When you have bases basically right next door to each, it is going to be chaotic. And should also consider the depth of the Sunda and Lombok. They may not be deep enough for the bigger ships.

This is why China tried hard to appease Indonesia when they got angry over the dispute near Natuna Island a few years ago. They tried to put on a brave front, thinking Indonesia would step back unwillingly like its other neighbors but when Indonesia sent many military and even had the president visit the Island itself, China began softening its approach considerably. China can only take Pacific Ocean's route or waste more fuel to go around the country itself if Indonesia turned hostile. It didn't help they also already soured their relationship with Philippines, Malaysia, and Singapore. You don't fck with the countries in your trade route. Everyone should know that.

Maritime containment of China whether by blockade or trade policies will reduce or cut totally OZ exports to China, cut China trade to many countries, including US and JP will hurt themselves first, and cause a world recession. Yes, it will happened and the world will just stand and watch. No country will interfere due to economic issue. America has their own fair share of problem, they won't plunge themselves for some small island such as Taiwan. Europe power house such as German would not want anything to do with this... As for other Asia counterparts...our politician has been lickin and wearin China CCP used underwear to do anything about it. Japan will just reinforce their own defense... You can see how China been applying economic pressure and all the little thing to suppress Taiwan, Today Taiwan is not recognize in most country as independent country of their own. and I do believe if the China project silk road become successful, it will greatly affect SEA, esp Malaysia and Singapore port logistic.

And that’s not even without the support US and regional allies like Japan and India, who will just blockade every waterway into China, while denying Chinese air and naval superiority. 1. China can invade and take Taiwan, but suffer massive losses in both casualties and money making it not worth it and can cause severe economic issues if the rest of the world sanctioning China doesn’t. 2. USA vs China will just trigger WW3, but if it doesn’t then a combined Japan-India-USA naval blockade of every possible maritime strait in the area will quickly force China to negotiate peace while suffering minor casualties on both sides. 3. China for now is doing better and getting more powerful, but severe population loss and labor shortages starting next decade will bring China, and the rest of the world, down to a depression.

I agree sure... you are right. But Afghanistan and Pakistan are doing more. China is building a neo-slick road. Pakistan is indirectly part of China and under control of the Taliban. Pakistan in a way is Taliban. Afghanistan and Pakistan are one country under the control of the Parshtu people in both countries making on thir own hlaf of the population in the region the biggest ethnicity by far. China wants to usa them and Bangladesh and the 200M Muslims inside of India and Kashmiri to take over and divide and colonize India. Afghanistan fall to the Taliban changes the argument. China most likely to make a strong base at the border with Afghanistan or a bit inside Afghanistan border or half hlaf on the border itself in between to provide assistance to current government in Afghanistan the Taliban as well a smaller one in Pakistan. 1:12 there are actually at least 2 more choke points that could be considered as important for global trade both affecting Russia, these are of course the Turkish Straits to the Black Sea and the Danish straits through Denmark If the ice melts earlier than expected, then there might be an additional strait that will be important and this is of course the Bering Strait between the US and Russia

A directly nearby choke point would be the Andaman and Nicobar Islands which are Indian Territory. If either these islands or the Malacca strait are blocked off, there would be a lot of disruptions to Eastern bound trade.

Excellent overview. There are a few point to be made. One is even at Chinas projected build out by 2030, the amphibious force isn’t large enough to reopen a closed malacca strait. Not even close. Even the US doesn’t have that much capacity anymore and by that time frame will still be over twice as large as China. Second those three port/bases circling india are in very unstable countries that are not true allies of China. In time of war, those countries would more than likely tell China to leave so as not to be sucked into a conflict. Last no matter what China does, they can’t overcome the inherent advantages india has in the region. If the time came india would be using it’s entire navy against a portion of China’s. In addition india would have the availability of land based air power and allies to support them. China has none of that.

@H L If you're referring to Nehru's forward policy, it started due to Chinese troops entering Indian territory. Tje goal was to surround their camps but as a result it looks like India was invading Tibet from the Chinese perspective. Mao invaded India since he believed that India along with the US had expansionist plans against China and controlling Tibet would prevent Indian from ever having access to the Chinese mainland. There's also the concept of the "Five fingers of Tibet" which includes some Indian states. China still makes attempts to penetrate these regions occasionally including through Bhutan.

Kamome, Correction for you around the 7:20 time mark. The USMC MAGTF (Marine Air Ground Task Force) Can operate at up to a division level. We operate in essence 3 different sized Marine expeditionalry operational groups. The largest is the MEF(Marine Expeditionatry Force) which consists of about 50000 Marines, or division strength and is capable of independent operations for up to 60 days. The second largest is the MEB (Marine Expeditionary Brigade) which has about 14,000 Marines centered around a Marine Rifle regiment and is capable of operating indepently for up to 30 days. The third largest is MEU(Marine Expeditionary Unit) and consists of about 1500 Marines centered around a Marine Rifle battalion and is capable of independent operations of up to 15 days. There is also a SPMAGTF, which can vary in size and structure depending on its mission. Typically have used for things like NEO missions. The two videos you have posted are intersting and for most post factually accurate. Keep up the good work. What is your background by the way?

All other alternatives of trade roads built for China are theoretically feasible but cost factors are so heavy that they only increase overall cost burden for China’s ambition of expansion. If the nation carries so much burden to lift its power, eventual collapsing will be miserable once falls.

Any fuel pipelines carried across land is super vulnerable to sabotage and attack. An example would be the deadhorse to lower Alaska pipeline is so prone and certainly targeted by the Soviets (It passes through the length of AK)

Yeah I know about palm oil ban. But that's came from the EU first, US just follow suit. That's because they can't compete with the shear amount of volume we're pumping out. Rubber been on the backseat on exports in favour for palm oil since like 20 years ago.

Great video. I would argue that China’s naval buildup is directed towards invasion of Taiwan rather than projecting power as far as the Malacca strait. For that kind of power projection, amphibious assets aren’t really ideal, but they are necessary to invade Taiwan. It does demonstrate the vulnerability of China if does invade Taiwan.

The video elaborates itself well in all aspects, but your argument has no ground that the Chinese navy build-up is targeting Taiwan. The Taiwan strait is narrow and shallow, which can be covered by rockets from the costal province and missles from far areas. The landing in Taiwan does not need those warships since Taiwan almost has ZERO marine force.

It seems that in the event of the regional war, China’s only viable sea route could be from one of the ports in Manchuria (not sure if I spelled wrong) to somewhere in the Siberia. Many other routes are likely to be secured by joint sea forces led by United States and/or Japan; that Strait is no exception. Besides, I’m sure both parties are already aware of this

i m from singapore . Kra canal is not feasible and more a propaganda campaign by China and some private companies from china (these private companies likely under control of CCP gov't also. ) to create all the hypes and fake news.... it is definitely NOT feasible either economically or politically. it has also been exposed that alot of those signatures between thai and China sides are all orchestrated by China side and both sides are actually Chinese owned companies i.e. China let 2 companies registered in different countries sign some agreements which has NO official backing from either China CCP gov't or Thai gov't ...all for propaganda purposes to control or affect share prices of some companies in china or brainwash gullible overseas chinese to create Chinese nationalism amongst overseas ethnic chinese , especially those in SE Asia (especially some malaysian Chinese since these people due to their education background in chinese language schools allowed by Malaysia government , are MOST prone to be brainwashed by RED CHINA )

There was an Idea to Build a "Suez canal like" water way cutting across Malaysia and Thailand, to by pass Singapore and reduce the shipping time, but i guess the idea did not go through .

The idea was expensive and the benefits doesn't outweights the costs very much. Plus, thailand doesn't have that kind of budget and only china is willing to fund but i guess they're not stupid enough to take on the offer. Btw, the idea was then changed to a connected twin port, one port on the east and one in thr west connected through a rail road but a new problem arise and that is efficiency to unload, transfer and load the containers again

@@Kamome163 the idea was mainly for oil.. shipping of oil from middle east to china. but as countries pledged to go green and move away from fossil fuel, China also moving towards EV and solar panels. the need for the canal is not as economical, given if it took 10 years or 15 years to dig.. the Middle east oil supply wont be as plentiful as now..

The EU just had a vote on whether or not to strengthen ties with Taiwan. 60 said voted YES we should, 4 voted NO we will not.

Great point! Now the Parliament has to vote it though, however for any concrete action by the EU it has to pass through the Council vote. However, there are few countries in the EU that might go against it.

An embargo on the Malacca straits will never work because you will be causing disaster Korea, Japan, Phillipines, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam and Indonesia. No sane country in SEA would authorise such an embargo. The only possibility of an embargo happening is in the Indian ocean as India is probably the only country that does not lose out from such an embargo as they have low trade dependency on China and that's China's main weakness. This is why Sri Lanka and Pakistan is so highly prized.
