As a traveler with over a decade in China and half a decade in Japan, I wanted to take a closer look and make a comparison video regarding which of these highly safe countries is the safest: China or Japan?
The topic of safety in China has been the topic of conversation for many people around the world after the recent stabbing of four college professors in northeastern China (Jilin City) while on a short visit.
In this video, there's no BS, no propaganda, no bias - just my honest take. Enjoy the video.

I’ve been to both and they’re equally safe from my experiences. The China stories sound a bit outlandish, not that it couldn’t happen, but it’s shocking to hear you’ve had so many such negative encounters that I actually find it hard to believe. All bets are off whenever you’re around drunk people anywhere in the world, but China is one of the safest countries I’ve ever been to, and all of my friends in China, local or foreign, say the same. Japan is undoubtedly safe as well, but I just wouldn’t say there’s a big difference between the 2 in terms of safety. It also depends where u hang out at.

In China it's easy for things to pop off much faster and some Chinese also have a tendency and willingness to use knives and beer bottles. Knife violence is a real problem in China, unfortunately... it just doesn't get reported on. We can't know China's actual crime rate, but it's definitely much much higher than Japan. Hands down Japan is much, MUCH safer. You might find my stories hard to believe because you haven't lived as a foreigner in China for over a decade. If you had, you definitely wouldn't find it hard to believe. Thanks for watching/commenting.

I can't recall any Americans being targeted in Japan, S.Korea, Taiwan Thailand , Vietnam and Singapore like this incident or the 2008 Olympic attack. Because of politics and over heated rhetoric, Americans and Japanese are indisputably safer in those countries than China.

@@chopsticksandtrains I can’t say I agree with your view. When u say its actual crime rate is definitely much higher, you’re making a subjective and anecdotal claim that nobody I know has experienced in China. Additionally, I highly disagree that knife violence is a problem in China, especially when u consider its population. There’s just no truth nor evidence to support that. I’ve never seen anything close to that myself in China. I’m guessing that you may have been traveling somewhere that’s not a major city. In the rural areas where people may be less educated it’s possible u may run into such a situation, especially with drunkards, but it is extremely uncommon to see an average person carrying a knife in China.

Hey man, recently been enjoying your videos, I've been noticing or sensing that your attitude seems to be changing towards China and Chinese culture in these last few videos. Have you ever considered studying Japanese and living in Japan for the near future? Their country and culture seems to be a better fit for your personality. I already watched your video on why you chose to stay in China, but your videos lately seemed a bit "somber"/ bitter towards China and Chinese people lately and I felt compelled to comment. At least if you moved to Japan, you wouldn't have to deal with people cutting you in line, that is the thing I hate the most about Chinese culture. I also think some Chinese are a bit inconsiderate, socially inept, loud and tend to exhibit culturally unattractive behaviors, at least when compared to the Japanese and I hate to admit this because I am Chinese American. I think the younger generation is a tad better. Anyhow, I just felt compelled to let you know that maybe you are fighting an uphill battle by staying in a place you probably don't really like. Maybe its because I also feel the same. Anyways, good luck to you and great video as always.

Thx for the great video. I think the main reason for seeing fewer ultra-nationalists in Japan is your nationality. If you go to Japan as a Chinese person, you will still experience things similar to what you discussed for China. The official media nowadays, no matter which country they are from (cn, jp, us, etc), always try to render the worst scenes of their opponent countries. One thing I feel is an issue is that the way the CCP, its state media and hordes of shills are either covering up or downplaying the horrible tragedy involving the four US professors is only going to make people want to stay away from China. If you think about it, if something similar were to happen to a foreigner visiting China and this is how the country is going to spin the narrative, what recourse do they have to compensation or justice? Some things to chew on as you are watching this video: 1. China's population is 11 times that of Japan. Would this have any effect on safety of the person? 2. In Chinese cities, there is 100% CCTV coverage of public places. This coupled with a zero tolerance for crime works in your favour more than you would think. How is the CCTV coverage in Japan. 3. Would you change your safety view if you were a solo female traveller in Japan? Mostly safe but there have been stories. 4. So Japan does not any nationalism deep down compared to China? Research what the Japanese military did and the population thought in 1937-1945 in China. 5. Instead of comparing 2 countries with approximately the same level of safety, why not compare to some other country like India? Anyway, no need to reply. Just something to chew on.

As another person who has lived in both countries, allow me to put in my two cents: 1) In terms of normal population/statistical distribution you'd probably get the same numbers (percentage wise). However, since China's stats are, as one of their high level government officials said, "Made up", one cannot believe the "official figures". Thus, true comparison is impossible. 2) Good question about CCTV coverage. As per zero crime tolerance in China, that's a total farce. Law enforcement happens when a problem reaches a public/face loss level. Plenty of crimes happen (seen it with my own eyes), though without good, honest reporting (Point #1), you can't say it's zero. 3) Plenty of solo female travellers vlogging in both countries. It doesn't mean they're aren't dangers in both. I've heard stories from both. 4) Japan does have a tiny group of nationalist. However, unlike China, the Japanese government doesn't support that in the way the CCP directly does with PSAs, state media, and etc. 5) I would assume he's comparing China, and Japan because they often get compared by many people. Chinese, generally speaking, will often have strong, negative opinions about Japan, in part because of history and CCP propaganda. This is not to say that all Chinese think this way. I have met many who don't. India, would be an interesting comparison, though I suspect, for some (not saying you), it is done more as distraction since, in many ways, Japan is better than China. So, using a country that is less developed, and a potential manufacturing/tech rival to China, is a useful way to boost China's image via a perceived weaker nation.

I am Chinese and do not like Japan very much. However, the fact remains that Japan is very safe for tourists (if we consider only criminal activity and exclude natural disasters like volcanoes or earthquakes). According to Wikipedia, the murder rate per 100,000 people is 0.5 in China (2020) and 0.2 in Japan (2021). Honestly, Confucian cultural regions are generally quite safe for tourists, such as Hong Kong SAR, Taiwan Province of China, Singapore, Vietnam, and so on. I have a friend who traveled in several South American countries with rampant drug-related crimes for six months. When she returned and told me about her experiences, I was shocked: she said that almost every month (every month!) she would lose a phone or have her bag snatched, and she had to keep buying new ones.

Pray tell, why not? You’ve been there to experience the country for yourself? You know of the history, people, cultures, religions, economics, politics, and landmarks to visit? What’s this? Oh, I see! You haven’t, nor do you have any desire to do so. You hate the Chinese people, because of your little knowledge of the country. You think the entirety of the people as CCP. I would berate you, as one would scold a child, but I will not; instead, I impart this on you: Remedy your ignorance, by traveling. You will never know anything about the world, by being constantly told what to believe. Your knowledge must come from different sources, so it isn’t stale and rigid. Different perspectives give you more insights. Traveling and getting to know different people are beneficial. Those experiences, the good and the bad, will make you become more seasoned and help you grow. That is how you’ll gain both knowledge and wisdom. Let this be a lesson to you.

@@odatatsunobuI would be willing to go back to Hong Kong-even now. Beijing not so much. Shanghai maybe.

Either way about 1000 x safer than America and 100 x safer than Europe. Non-issue.
