Lol! American Chinese food doesn't even come close to genuine Chinse cuisine. I never saw so much different types of food in my life than during my visits to the country. Never experienced so many different dishes. It's impossible to explain. Go to an American China Town and you'll come "close" to experience the real deal, but not completely.

I am curious about something. How do Chinese people typically feel about ethnic Chinese in Singapore? Like, do they like Chinese Singaporeans due to having the same ancestors, roots, culture, etc.? For example similar to how Brits and Americans with British heritage might call each other "cousins across the pond"?

In Chinese Costume Dramas, they're always making pastries with osmanthus flowers and also hair oil. Lotus root, mostly made into soup, appears in The Untamed. Cheers! 🥂

Not much of an eggplant guy, but I'd try it (if I knew the name of the dish).

Is this related to the dish "8 treasures"?
@chopsticksandtrains5 күн бұрын
Very good question! But actually there's no connection to the eight cuisines and the eight treasures. The Eight Treasures dish uses 8 main ingredients, and that's why they call it that.

Welcome! You're pretty close to my part of China. Yeah you are right, the food can be sweet and there is a lot of seafood. I don't like sweet food! I bet you're sorry you didn't try the Zhejiang 尿鸡蛋。 I like the favabeans.

@@chopsticksandtrains A bit farther up the river. but close enough. Xiaolongbao are pretty universal, I think. Yummy. By far Sichuan food is the best. Outside of Shanghai, food in this central eastern part of China isn't worth the trip in my opinion. What is the best in Dongbei?

My husband and I went to China in 2018 for a vacation but we were mostly in Shanghai and Shenzen (buying interesting nuggets was so fun there). Your rule of thumb about Chinese restaurants where we can see the cook prepare almost in front of you was what we did and we never had any food poisoning there. My personal rule of thumb is just avoid some seafood and shellfish as I am allergic. I don't like the political stance China is having especially with its Asian neighbors (husband and I are from neighboring Asian countries) but exploring the food and funny items are something underrated to do. The locals are strangely warm and welcoming though.

Thanks for the great comment! Yeah, China has a... well, 'complex' relationship with it's neighbors and other countries in the region. Seems like plenty of people are unhappy with how some things are going. Glad to hear you had a good experience in China!

LOL, the infamous 'Piss eggs' ay? Not sure I'd try one of those (unless someone dared me and offered a big sack o' money for doing it). It's crazy though, those are actually from Zhejiang Province - didn't even think of it while I was there. 🤮
@mikestewart47525 күн бұрын
@@chopsticksandtrains Purely out of curiosity, do they advertise that shit in that area? Like, do you see billboards on the roads for piss-eggs? The whole topic is fascinating to me for some bizarre reason I cannot explain.

@@mikestewart4752 LOL I haven't been to Dongyang, so I can't really give a true answer... I doubt they advertise it too heavy, but I wouldn't be surprised to hear locals bragging about them. Haha... Your safety travel tips are very helpful. I was brought up to always be aware of my situation. I think crowds are one of the most dangerous situations and to always maintain a position on the edge of the crowd and constantly monitor those around you is vital. I had a "tourist" type moment of awe struck in times square and immediately found a guy in my face trying to sell me something. Whoops! When I stay vigilant I never have a problem.

All these safety tips are good, though I think the bigger question on many people's minds is: For the sake of argument, if something bad were to happen to them, how is the government going to handle the news reporting on the incident, and what recourse do they have (if any) to justice or compensation?
@chopsticksandtrains7 күн бұрын
My take on it is that the news would be, well, nonexistent. I don't think it would be kept quiet because China doesn't want that kind of bad publicity (especially now when they are trying to revive their tourism sector). As far as recourse/justice/compensation, it's really hard to say. If a local injured a foreign woman, chances are, he'd be in at least some trouble. As far as any specifics, it's too subjective to try to address here.
@zuriyel53687 күн бұрын
@@chopsticksandtrains Sometimes it's good to do research or just say that you don't know due to lack of knowledge. The recent knife attack on four American college instructors in Northern China proves the opposite with the story being all over Chinese news, as well as mentioning the four Americans being compensated, although I haven't heard about the Chinese man who got stabbed in order to disarm the attacker getting compensation but that prolly happened as well. In addition, the prosecution proceedings are also underway for the assailant.
