Lots of interest in EVs here in Thailand with the government offering $8,500 grants on EVs and also grants on electric motorbikes that are assembled here. MG has assembled cars here for some time and has just announced the construction of an EV battery plant and NEW ENERGY INDUSTRIAL PARK for the development of battery modules and a production line for MG electric vehicles.

Hi Elliot Any information on the capabilities of Chinese companies to survive and expand their exports would be much appreciated. Currenlty very few EV companies in China are in the black which could soon result in a reduction in the variety of EVs on offer and/or their ability to support their products overseas.

This is the big question. Lots of cash burn, but little profitability right now.

The PRC will ban combustion engines in future. Chinese market is big enough and some little players making room for the big boys, isnt that capitalism at its best?

Thailand is working really hard at attracting Chinese investment to the country. Not so long ago the headlines were about Thailand buying submarines to China while in the past it would have turned to other countries. There is also the rail connection being built linking China and Thailand, also with Chinese investment. On the political situation this can also be seen with other events happening in Europe and Thailand alignment with China on these. Thailand benefits greatly from the good relations with China, which is doing so well in the automotive sector. I would not be surprised to see in a few years a larger production from Chinese than Japanese automakers in the country! I did the switch to a Chinese EV a year ago, I really believe from what I see it won’t take long for China to reach the level of quality of some prestigious German brands.

good cat (500 ultra as it’s called here), a bit disappointed by the software but overall a great upgrade from a Toyota vios, at a reasonable price after subsidies and discounts. Taking opportunity to share: I am glad to see you still produce content on your channel as well, also love the unique locations you pick for the various EV testing, a chance to discover some beautiful landscapes of China.

Interesting analysis. I guess Vietnam would be more difficult to move into, with the dominance of Vingroup... Is this move so BYD, GWM et al can fully commit individual factory focus to either RHD (via Thailand) or LHD (back in China)? If that's the case, where outside of SE Asia could this differentiated model work? It wasn't that long ago when GM shut down Holden factories in Australia. Will Chinese brands step into European production facilities left by legacy companies, or is it just too expensive to come to UK? Crystal ball time!
@jasonmugridge

I imagine coming to the UK would be a great move for them, similar to Thailand but even higher skilled workers, however the UK government seem to have their heads stuck in the sand.

@@jasonmugridge In the sand, or in the feeding trough - the country is wracked by a protracted Cost of Greed crisis... It would be ironic to see BMW talk of moving MINI production away from UK (although I'm not sure of they've backed down on those plans), and into China, only to have BYD buy the old UK factory and move in!

Legacy auto makers don't necessarily make high end or better EVs, they falsely depend on their legacy reputation to sell overpriced EVs. In comparison, the EVs from the new comers are just as good if not out right better than most of the legacy makers, but at more affordable prices. The combination of the two will spell disaster for the old players. I guess only time will tell.

To set EV factory in south East Asian countries, Thailand is the best choice. Why ? It has all the infrastructure that are needed. The Thais are skilled & hardworking & knowledgeable people. It is a very very very moderate country with regards to race & religion. Thailand do NOT govern their people or foreigners based on religion. Thailand has FULL entertainment for people after a HARD DAY' work. !! Thailand has all you need to de-stress after a HARD DAY' work !!! Thailand is the most optimum country. The people are most friendly & generous. Sawadee

With ASEAN-China FTA trade agreement, we abolished import duty on Chinese BEVs, so this has opened flood gate for not only just Chinese mass market brands but also European and American EV manufacturers that build BEVs and export from China. Thailand is basically free real estate for Chinese made BEVs right now, you can pick from the cheapest compact BEV like Neta V SUV to high end like Tesla Model 3/Y and Lotus Eletre. Those Japanese manufacturers who relied on huge import duty to sell their locally poorly made ICE garbages have complained about this FTA for years...but who cares LoL. People want decently priced BEVs that is why Chinese made BEVs come into picture.
