Thank you Jeanette 👍 This was one of the things we renewed in class today. I am currently studying for an exam that will have HSK 2 vocabulary, but it is always advisable to renew every single lesson. Especially characters and classifiers (本, 张, 条 etc).

I did have a pretty good grasp the first time, however, I was always second guessing myself with the question like clauses. I think making a video like this was extremely helpful. Once again, I don't know of anyone else who is this detailed in their teaching online. Thank you so much! Teachers are all helpful. I could see responding well even if I was in a lecture room. ❤

I used to think the difference is that 还是 is used to ask a question and 或者 is to answer a question with two options. Now I know there's more to those two words. Thank you

I got all of the examples right. But I think it’s because I’ve been studying Chinese for so long that my correct answers were simply based on what made sense and what felt right. Good news to all, once you get it, it just makes sense.

do you want A? there's still some B, you could have that instead. Question mark - use HAI SHI 还是 (exclusive or: one or the other and not both or something else) you can have A or B (or neither or both or something else entirely) full stop 或者 use HUOZHE (inclusive or)

Thank you for an excellent lesson regarding these two important words. I like the new teacher, Jeanette. I think she is very thorough and clear. I wonder if it would be worth emphasizing that when 还是 is used in a question, it is incorrect to put 吗 at the end. For example: "Do you like red or white?" »» "你喜欢红色还是白色吗?" would be incorrect. Also (perhaps due to my lack of experience), the sentence at 7:07 (我不喜欢打篮球和跑步) seems awkward. I think I would rather use 也不 than 和. So, I would be tempted to say: 我不喜欢打篮球也不喜欢跑步. If I used 和, I think I would be tempted to say: 打篮球和跑步我都不喜欢.

Thanks for your comment, mountaintag. Yes, it is worth emphasizing that when ”还是” is used in a question, it is incorrect to put "吗” at the end. “我不喜欢打篮球也不喜欢跑步” and打篮球和跑步我都不喜欢”, both are more natural.

Your explanation is incorrect. They both express options the difference is what parts of the speech they connect. The first connects verbs, the second others.
