The biggest issue with what Japan teaches in history classes and museums is that they whitewash all the atrocities they did, mainly in WW2, very unlike Germany's treatment of their own history where they own it all. At best, they make the younger generation apathetic and outright ignorant about it. Worse, many people (and politicians) actively deny they did any atrocities. Yasukuni itself doesn't just glorify WW2 figures. It is a shrine for fallen soldiers that died defending the Emperor, which means all the figures since the Meiji restoration. The problem is they include all the war criminals from WW2 (and the war in China and Korea) in the shrine. Now, praying for fallen soldiers is commendable. But when those soldiers include convicted war criminals, then I understand how it can be infuriating. Still, it does NOT justify desecrating or disrespecting ANY monuments they may have. The least you can do is just avoid those places if they offend you. The best is to befriend them and raise the issue respectfully, in the hope that it changes some minds, and given time maybe enough minds may be convinced to do something about it down the line.
