The Chinese SKS, AKA the Type 56 "Semi" Carbine is an iconic participant of conflicts in Vietnam, and a significantly armed the Chinese PLA.
In North America, it has often been hailed as a "more accurate" host for the 7.62x39 cartridge, but how does our specimen reflect that?
**Take note that this is ONE specimen of many, we invite you to film response videos, hopefully with 9-10 shot groups of your SKS to see if we draw from a larger sample size! **
A special thanks to Brandon from The Gun Room in the Woodlands Texas for loaning us this specimen. Also thanks to Mr. Phuc Long from Firepower United.... for everything.
**Huge Thanks to Kevin S. for helping us with the Chinese subtitles!**

I own the same exact model in this video, the one with the pole bayonet which I believe was the civilian model. Was imported into Canada many years ago and bought brand new by the person I purchased it from. It has an extremely tight stock where only the rear portion of the receiver will lift out some when I disassemble it to that step, but the front is so tight that I'm worried it might affect the harmonics/accuracy of my rifle if I force it too much. Does anyone know if tight tolerances are attributing to some rifles being more accurate than others? I've seen many that are very loose and have some form of play in the fit.

@@derekgriffith6600 For additional information, the general design of the SKS is 0.8in R50 at 100m with a margin of error there depending on build quality and tolerances of any specific rifle, which isn't particularly convertible to MOA because it counts hits in vertical string and horizontal cross sections. Either way, it's perfectly acceptable in a combat capacity with less than a full torso spread up to somewhere around 400-500m.

Indeed, my Type56 is a true beater gun I've taken to the brush multiple times and I'd trust my life on it. The consistency and accuracy seen in the video is pretty much on par with what I expected. Lately, I've started to favor my Type81 for outings, though. It's shaping up to be my runner-up with very little margin. It's got some disadvantage, like it's being shown in the video (it's basically a fancy-ish looking AK, only the safety and the BHO differs), but I got myself 10-round mags. The Type81 shoots so softly even compared to the SKS;:it's also short-stroke operated but the bolt has a lot more space to travel and doesn't noticeably kick back at all, with all the 'jerk' being on the BCG/bolt slamming back into battery. I'd love to see a vid by 9HR on it.

Honestly, the best I've ever seen out of an SKS is one I'd bought and spent the time trying to accurize. It was a Norinco SKS I paid about $300 for, spent maybe $300 more trying to get it up to par. Using Lapua Brass and shooting from the prone free handed I could get 1 1/4 MOA at best. I did put it on a bench and vise once to see just how tight it would go, never went below 1 MOA. But that was an SKS I had put a lot of work into and used top quality ammo. When I used Steel cased stuff like that Barnual you used, I was getting maybe 2 3/4 MOA prone free handed. Worst group I ever saw was 3 3/4. But before I did that work to it, with the Lapua it was a solid 2 to 2 1/2 MOA gun. With steel, like 3-5 depending on brand and such. But I've seen other SKS examples that were easily 4-6 MOA with the same stuff. There's just so much variances in one SKS from the next it's hard to compare sometimes but what you shot and showed was pretty reflective of MOST SKS rifles I've seen grouped or shot myself. They almost all string vertically, whether or not they do to the right, left, or stay centered is up to the SKS and ammo usually. I'm sure somebody will be saying how it's not fair because it's not a Russian SKS or anything... But that's a load of crap. I've shot more than a few Russian SKS and while if they are in good shape they DO tend to shoot a bit nicer than the Chinese ones, most Russians are not in tip top shape and shoot about the same. Romanian SKS rifles are built to the same standard as Russian ones usually but never seem to get that level of praise. Though some of those Yugo SKS rifles have had some of the best groups I've seen. I think that extra weight at the front with the grenade launcher devices is why. One of the things I like but also dislike as they are heavier than most other SKS's. I think a series of comparing SKS to AK rifles would be interesting even if I've seen some of that stuff a thousand times or more.

@@kylec.6818 Truth is most SKS rifles are 5-6 MOA guns. People just often like to attribute qualities and traits to them they simply don't have. @@kylec.6818 I've seen a handful of examples that shoot tighter than most SKS rifles. I recall when a friend of mine bought a Russian and I got a Norinco the same day, my Norinco was shooting about 4 MOA with steel and about 2 3/4 with brass. And his was shooting about 6 MOA with steel and 4 MOA with brass. I find some are just built good and others not so much. I ended up doing an accurizing job on the gun, rebedding the stock and a trigger and action job. Got it down to shooting 1 1/4 MOA with Lapua Brass free handed from the prone and around 3 1/2 MOA with steel.

There’s a specific number that you add to it that I don’t remember. Plus most newer SKS’s will be Chinese, since Russia stopped production well before China did. And the russian ones will be crazy expensive

Some note on my personal experience (an old man's) you may find interesting: 1. Most of the Vietnam variant SKS's had blade bayonets and milled trigger guards. I've shot a lot of them back when. Even beat up and worn out, they were accurate and about 2.5 minutes of angle at 100 yards. 2. When I left the Army in 1988, I bought a SKS variant sold by Norinco. It had a cuneiform bayonet, a wooden handguard/gas block cover and a stamped steel trigger guard. Less than six months later, I bought a Polytech milled receiver AK-47S. I also had a case or two of the Chinese 7.62 X 39 I bought at the same time. It was military surplus, came in a wooden case with two spam cans on stripper clips wrapped in paper, was ball ammo and the best 7.62 X 39 ammo I've shot in over 30 years of shooting. It was accurate. 3. One day at a small 100 yard range (measured) near my home, I shot both the SKS and the AK-47S milled receiver rifles using the Chinese surplus ammo. Results of ten 10-round groups: SKS averaged 2.5 MOA consistently, no vertical stringing. AK-47S averaged 3.5 MOA consistently, no vertical stringing. 4. Checking with other friends who could shoot, I found this was pretty consistent results from their rifles of the time (Several SKS and AK/AKS variants. Later on, there were other variants to show up and I'm not sure if they were commercial or later military surplus. It was hard to tell and no one but the Chinese arsenals can probably answer this question. Only regret: I wish I had bought a pallet of that ammo. It was going for 50 bucks a tin or 100 a case, cheapest ammo around. Comparatively, the ammo made in the former Soviet Union is junk. Just my .02, Dave

The ammo was fine. If you paid attention he said they tested that same ammo minutes apart on the AKM on the day after this video and then much later both were tested again. (assuming with a cold barrel both times). So no. It's definitely the rifle. Mine shoots the same with "minute of man" accuracy. Without a spotter you're not likely to easily make 300 meter shots at least not without a lot of adjustment. But people always get mad when I say that the SKS is a 200 meter rifle at best. I'm sure here and there a few people have a "sweet" example where the stars aligned on the day theirs was produced, but in general, the Type 96 models at least, are generally not particularly accurate rifles even if they look like they should be accurate. I love mine and will never sell mine as its a great hog gun, is super reliable, and very fun to shoot. But people need to stop pretending that it's some kind of sniper rifle or something just because it has a long barrel. It's just a simple and crude mass produced WWII style battle rifle designed to be reliable, easy to maintain, and easy to operate as it was meant for conscripts. It's lack of accuracy is probably one of many reasons why the AK-47 replaced it.
@crgintx
@crgintx 4 жыл бұрын
@@wigon I've shot steel case ammo and I've shot better quality brass boxer primed from the same gun at the same time and conditions, the better ammo shot smaller groups. 20 years ago I was lucky enough to snag 200 rounds of 7.62x39 Lapua Match ammo for the princely sum of $22. It shot first 3 rounds touching at 100 yards, first 5 inside 1.5 inches and the whole magazine into 2" group. No steel cased ammo I've shot in any of my SKS's(owned 3, still have 2) has ever got close to the Lapua Match in consistency. I reload these cases till this day with Reloder 7, CCI 220 primers and 123 Hornady FMJ bullets. The FMJ bullets are more accurate than HP bullets through my rifles. 400 yards with 6x scope on a Choate Machine Tool mount is boringly easy to hit. I use the Tech Sight TS200 sight on my Paratrooper model with a Williams Fire sight front post. Huge improvement over the stock sights. If I'm shooting feral hog for eating, I load 160 cast lead bullets loaded to 1500 fps. BTW I've been shooting SKS's since the started importing them some 30 years ago. It's more the poor man's Mini-30 IMO than a AR/AK competitor.

It's a good rifle, as all Tikkas are. That being said, I would recommend getting T3X Varmint and putting it in Cadex/MDT chassis. At least back when I was buying my T3X, Varmint had more caliber choices than TAC A1. This way I have it in 6.5x55, which is almost half the price of similar quality 6.5CM with similar ballistics. Ofc that only applies to where i live, I dunno what is the situation where you are, but ammo cost is important. The cheaper it is, the more you will be able to shoot. And with many modern rifles, the shooter is the limiting factor, so training is important. The rifle+chassis cost me around the same as TAC A1 would. Also, I highly recommend Accuracy International style bolt handle from Sterk for your Tikka. A small thing, but I love it.
