My gandfather handed me a Savaage 110 in .30-06 when i was about 13. I am now 46 and have handed it to my 14 year old son. That rifle is a killer and has taken countless deer in the SC woods. great round and great rifle for its intended purpose. Keep up the good work.

I can say with absolute certainty after hunting for 20 years and being only 35 years old that there’s a movement within the hunting community that heading more towards the “tactical” end of things. Not to say that most of us dragging the the latest and greatest sniping equipment up into our tree stands but it’s certainly not uncommon for us to use rifles with very solid chassis, heavier barrels, muzzle brakes or suppressors, higher quality optics, match grade ammunition, etc. At the end of the day it’s definitely a balance game and it depends on what you are hunting and the ranges that you are hunting at but the hunting community and especially a lot of the younger generations of hunters recognize the benefits to the higher end equipment and we are using it more and more where it makes sense. After all we aren’t just punching holes in paper, we are trying to humanely end an animals life. Accuracy should count for us as much as it does for anyone.

I bet that savage is more accurate than the average sniper rifle used in WWII...

The 30'06 has killed every 4 legged criter on the planet...many times over.. it has plenty of power and decent trajectory downrange. It is, the 3/4 ton pickup of cartridges, and delivers the goods in said fashion.

It's amazing to see the advancement of technology in rifles and optics since WW2 where our 'budget' hunting rifles are close to, if not surpassing the rifles and optics of the war. Ballistics and bullet technology play a role as well and it certainly is interesting to see how widely adopted new products and training have caused this leap. Not saying that the older weapons are obsolete, but there is certainly more you could do now.

This is not a Red Ryder folks; fully pumped it is 3 times the power of a Red Ryder and can be dangerous if not handled properly. Be safe out there.

So many emotions on this video. I was so excited to see a 30-06 on the practical accuracy range out to 500 and to hear it hit steel with some authority. I was nervous as all hell watching that scope come back after Henry pulls the trigger, wondering if he is gonna get scope eye. The confusion as to why this was uploaded at 0100 as if so didn't need to go to sleep. Excellent job as always gentlemen. It makes me want to take my 06 out to 500 to see how it runs.

I have the same rifle in .270 Winchester and the same spec 3x-9x40mm adjustable scope (Leupold Vari-X IIC)…it’s the older version with the hardwood stock and no Accutrigger. Love it, classic rifle with a classic scope.

funny how i just finished watching red dawn for the first time and then you guys come up with this video

I purchased a lightly used Rem783 ( with accu trigger equivalent) ( in 30-06) for a cool $100 off a buddy. I installed a Vortex Crossfire2 6-18x scope and a generic bipod. My issues were that the stock foreend would touch the barrel when the bipod was loaded, so I made some channels into the stock, buried 2 old carbon arrow shafts down there and sealed it with 2Ton epoxy, then sanded everything down to give the barrel ample clearance. I also filled the buttstock with quick drying silicone and lead 00Buck BBs to help with the recoil. It actually worked like a charm and although its not a precision rifle I was amazed that I was able to shoot 350yards with it consistently with trash ammo, and even better with my hand loads. I enjoy tinkering with stuff and I appreciate this video showing that one COULD take a hunting rifle and make it somewhat into a long shooting gun.

I enjoyed that video. A heavy hunting load with a true hunting rifle and a traditional 3-9 x 40 scope with a duplex reticle. You kept everything in perspective. I own two. A .300 Wetherby Vanguard and a 7mm HOWA 1500. Bi-pod and NIKON 3-9 x 40 with duplex reticle. Perfect 500 yard rifles.

I love the Savage 110, Have had an all original wood stocked 30-06 since 1984 that I hunt with every year, one shot, one kill. I get .75 in groups @100 with my 180 grn ballistic tip hand loads, you cant ask for better out of a factory rifle, although I did free float the barrel many years ago. Thanks for the video guys.

With 150 gr soft points, the .30-06 will liquify deer lungs well past 400 yards. It's an excellent round.

For me…. It’s a great deal more difficult to determine distances in the mountains, like Afghanistan or the Rocky Mountains. When hunting, I’ve mostly shot bolt action rifles made in the 1960’s and 70’s but I’ve also used my grandfathers Winchester model 1895 30-40, he was born in 1889 and this was his and later my scabbard rifle. I grew up on a large cattle ranch in the mountains in NM. Anyway, maybe someone can speak on this but it seems to me when I’m shooting downhill or uphill on steep angle that I can’t count on the bullet trajectory to act exactly the same as at a lower altitude and shooting on a relatively flat field. I think my shooting stories have grown as my mind has aged. But, I have told people that I’ve killed mule deer with the Winchester 30-40 220 grain at ranges between 500-700 yard. This rifle is open site. It literally feels like the bullet is moving slow enough to visibly see it. When it hits a deer you hear a thud and 100% of the time I’ve used it for deer hunting the deer, up to 280 lbs simply fall over dead or take two or three steps and fall over dead. I can’t say the same for the .270. Here is what I find very interesting. Understand in the 60’s and 70’s if we needed a deer for meat, we just shot one. Often we shoot them with what ever we had in our work truck. For me, there was always a Remington 722 with a weaver 4x scope. I’ve shot coyotes, bears, mule deer, antelope, jack rabbits, fox, coyote, and pronghorns with the .222 again with no injured and lost animals. When I was 16, a girlfriend came to visit our ranch along with her parents. The father love venison and I was trying my best to impress both of them by giving them a tour of the ranch. Anyway we saw several deer running up a gully and then the ran up the trough of a hill. As they neared the top, I whistled several short notes and the deer slowed and stopped. All I had was the .222 in the rear window rack of the 1963 Chevy pickup. I pulled it out and took a shot. Truthfully my girlfriends Dad was like… ain’t goin to happen and I was thinking…. I can do this. So I pulled the trigger. I was aiming mid mass with a guess for wind. I aimed about 25”inches above and to the left of the deer. It hit and the deer ran about 25 feet and fell over. It kicked and moved until we got up to it by driving slowly around trees and cactus. It appeared to be just over 3 tenths of a mile. We had to do a bit of weaving. So I’m guessing about 450-500 yards. I think with the 3006 and 270… it’s very reasonable to hit a deer or use most deer rifles as a sniper platform out to 1000 yards.

A typical bolt-action hunting rifle is probably one of the most overlooked yet effective weapons out there. It's lightweight, extremely balanced and ergonomic, delivers a punch unlike anything other, and simple to maintain. If you attach a low-power optic to a hunting rifle and rely on your cartridge's point-blank trajectory, you can hit anything from arm distance to approx. 400 yards without adjusting sights or worrying about BDC. Combine a hunting rifle with a good sidearm for indoor threats, and you're pretty well armed.

The Tikka T3 seems to be set up straight out of the box. It would be interesting to see you test one. A friend had one in 308 and couldn’t hit a thing with it. I loaded up some 168 Hornady SPBT in new Lapua brass and found it would easily shoot into 1.5” 3-shot groups at 400 yards, and do this repeatably. He was recoil shy. My nephew also purchased one in 270 and with new brass and 130 Hornady SST shot an equal score with self shooting my custom 6.5x55 at 300m and tied for the match. I suspect with some ammo tuning and bedding these rifles could easily top that. Buying factory rifles can be a lottery: most have the potential but it only needs a bad scope or some other factor to create unpredictable results. Savage has introduced a few innovations in their recent versions and they’ve always had a good reputation. You obviously have the skill to get the best out of a rifle of any sort but many recreational shooters will blame anything but their abilities.

Honestly, Red Dawn was fairly reasonable at its time. A hunting rifle ambush against a small squad could easily work as long as they took out the radioman and officer in the first salvo (and the designated marksman, if they had one). Outranged, not really knowing where their enemy is, and with no way to call for backup, a small squad could easily be wiped out. Given the technology of its day, it was perfectly plausible. What everyone needs to realize, though, is that a lot has changed in the last 36 years. Now, everyone has a handheld radio that can reach out over 10 miles, everyone has a GPS or GLONASS locator, and everyone wears body armor. You can no longer count on being able to cripple the squad's communications before they can call for support. And thanks to GPS or GLONASS, they will know EXACTLY where to send the attack helicopters which will be armed with infrared search equipment. They WILL find you, and they WILL kill you unless you can get underground before they arrive.

I have an old Winchester Model 70 chambered in 30-06 . It was a replica of a Famous USMC Sniper in Vietnam. Ole Carlos . My dad bought it in the early 80s . He gave it to me when I turned 15 . I've never shot that one for accuracy. I have shot my REM 700 Alaskan Ti at 600 yards . I hit 10" at 500 yards on the 2nd shot I fired. That's good enough for me Considering not having a BDC Reticle. I use a Wilson Combat 16" Recon Tactical 6.8SPC Upper for Deer and Hoggs . I use 100G GMX , SSA 110G Accubond or 120G SST. For Elk I use Aero M5E1 with Wilson Combat 18" Hunter Tactical Barrel . I mainly use 165g Partition or 180g Accubond. I have used 168g TTSX. Barnes and Nosler are my go too Hunting ammo for sure .

My very first gun my Dad gave me when I was about 7 was a bolt action Savage in .22. Before watching this video, I'm guessing that this rifle will do fairly well. They're good guns, and usually quite affordable as far as I know.

Do any rifles ever fail these videos? Even if it takes 80 rounds to hit out to 500 they always say “oh it seems capable of these ranges”. Honestly anything less than 70/80% of hit percentage is not capable personally.
