We have Zhang Long, a Chinese ITF (Interational Taekwondo Federation) Black Belt taking on some of the most famous Chinese Martial Arts "masters" in the recent MMA vs TCMA debate. Watching with us is professional MMA commentator John Evans of @BJJBreakdown. Let's watch together as ITK TKD black belt Zhang Long (张龙) takes on a Wing Chun student of Tai Chi master/fraud Ma Baoguo (don't ask us how a Tai Chi "Master" is able to train a Wing Chun student). The Wing Chun student is named Zheng Jia Kuan (郑加宽) and apparently he and Zhang Long got into a beef about the effectiveness of Chinese martial arts, so they decided to get into two matches, one for no-gi Jiu Jitsu grappling, the other for MMA ring fighting. Let's see who wins these two matches. After two these events, in June of 2019, during the same mega-event that Xu Xiaodong fought the Wing Chun fraud Lv, Zhang Long answered Kungfu fraud Tian Ye's challenge to TKD. Tian Ye had apparently said that TKD was not practical for self defense or combat sports, so Zhang Long decided to step up as a black belt. Let's see what happens during this match. This is one of our most epic extended features, so definitely let us know what martial arts lessons you learned from watching this.

Hey Jeff, great vid, there is just one thing i wan't to correct, ITF taekwon-do, are diferent from WTF, and we do punch on the face and the body. Im from Spain, where ITF it's not very popular, on my region (catalunya) there is only 2 or 3 masters, which are disciples of my master (Master Francesc Campanya), so i don't really know how it works outside of that, but ITF TKD it's very close to karate shotokan, so a lot of techniques are similar, we do spar, we do punch, leg kick and kick with both shin and foot. At least in my Dojang we do two kinds of sparring, a "realistic sparring" with low kicks takedowns (no ground game) oriented to a more realistic bouts (some of my partners compete on amateur kickboxig fights) and a "competition sparring" more limited to the rules of the semicontact match

some ITF instructors around the world actually include proper boxing and basic judo in their training. originally the style has throws and a wide variety of punching techniques, it's all in the TKD encyclopedia. but the average teacher doesn't have those skills taught.

@karate guy it has a lot of hand techniques, the same as in Karate, but it's not boxing. martial art punches are different from boxing for a lot of reasons, mainly; having hand wraps and gloves changes everything. by the way, Tang Soo Do is not ITF Tkd, they have nothing in common other than both being from Korea.

TaekwondoPanda Kind of. It kinda is body mechanics and fascia control to the extreme. What you get is excellent biomechanics, which gives you excellent strength efficiency and a very intuitive understanding and sensitivity towards human structure. the ability to connect your whole body at certain angles to generate power that looks almost fake, as well as the ability to manipulate your own structure so that grappling with a Tai Chi person just feels off as he is more sensitive towards your body structure than you and will use it against you. What it lacks is a complete curriculum to bring these advantages to the ring, not enough live sparring, lack of understanding of submission and conventional takedown techniques, mysticism.. etc At least, that is my working theory for now.

@karate guy originally it was a more varied and power based style, but unfortunately nowadays it's basically just turning kicks and axe kicks and nothing more, all done for point scoring. Kwonkicker is an old school WTF practitioner and he's a badass. but back in the 90's both Taekwon-Do lines were super aggressive and effective.

Well that might be because there 'real' martial artist claim the TMA technics won't work in real fighting. But in real fighting there are no restrictive rules. So by poking the guys eyes and the guy being unprepared to defend against something not allowed in his set of rules, he kinda shows that BJJ is fake as well. Before anybody starts shouting, I don't believe BJJ is fake, but it is limited. A trained BJJ fighter might eat a boxer in a one on one, but get kicked his head in by three guys trained in soccer, while the boxer would knock them all out.

Tai Chi is a fighting art, But it is NOT normally taught that way. Most people who practice it cant teach it as a combat method which is what it is. The reason Yang style does it's training slow is so that you can get the coordination for the moves right. Your teacher has to tell you something like, "This goes first because..this goes second because"..then..once you get the coordination..you can practice it with an opponent/training partner at regular speed. The slow motion practice is just for learning and making sure you get the little moves right. Like people normally do when they're just learning something.

The problem with kung fu and traditional styles is that they don't get modernised. There are "kung fu" style fighters in the UFC and sanda/sanshou is effective but because kung fu is an umbrella term the amount that isn't modernised outweighs the ones that are. It's a shame too because a lot of kung fu styles have unique punches and kicks that if mixed up with a boxing/kickboxing style could be effective, hopefully over the years this changes.

People confuse Inefficiency with originality. in ancient times, the martial arts were with weapons (swords, bow and arrows, crossbows, spears, faction daggers) and the last alternative was unarmed fighting. In ancient China, there was combat against the Mongols and they confronted the Chinese with the Mongolian fight called BOKH, this fight gave a new origin to an ancient Chinese martial art such as Shuai Jiao or Chiao Li. Zhou Dynasty, adopted this fight, even so, the combat was all armed. The modernization of martial arts in programmed fights (challenges) started very late and the strong evidence (records in old photos and videos) was in the 20th century. some styles of kung fu were already obsolete. With China weak, and some addicts to Opium (for me, the British were the first traffickers at that time) and with a selfish empress, who did not take care of her people, it was an easy bait for foreigners, even so, they kept the tradition however, without modernizing, that is, comparing a traditional fight with the times of today (anachronistic) would be unfair because Muay Thai is this Muay Thai, due to the westernization of boxing, Sanda is the same thing, so like Bjj (here in Brazil) the original Japanese jujutsu (Jigoro Kano/ Judo/ Mitsue Maeda/ ), is not the same thing as "Brazilian jiujitsu" (Fadda/ Gracie) which, from my point of view, is somewhat effective than the ORIGINAL! Kickboxing is original .. not (pure)???since it emerged between the clashes of Karate against Muay Thai. o "Is American Kickboxing Pure??? No. The mistakes of these kung fu masters are the stubbornness in admitting that they are old and also the new masters, who do not modernize (weight training, training in partnership with the partner or Sparring, You don't test yourself like Qi La La or False Monk Yi Long and the like) without getting rid of the traditional.

ITF vs WTF is quite different, I did ITF before going to Muay Thai and it was seriously not that bad, at least 50% punches and actual focus on how to throw them and defend against it. Of course, like all ritualized martial arts it has limitations, but as fancy white clothes styles go, it’s decent. Unlike other traditional MA’s which often are very keen on keeping with tradition, ITF actually tries to develop and evolve.

Punches, back fist, knife hand, spear hand, hammer fist and palm strikes. ITF even trains in offensive/defensive take downs. They also train in some weapons handling. When people talk Taekwondo they usually mean ATF or WTF which are Olympic style which are %90 kicking. They are for scoring points, not for self defense.

ITF practioner here I've been training since I was 5 years old. Taekwondo in a street fight not so practical and that is mostly because of circumstances such as jeans where your fighting e.t.c but if your talking about a 1 on 1 MMA fight I would argue it is amazing,if you practiced for as long as I have kicks are very natural and way more powerful than ifst which leads to easy damage/knockout but if your looking for a very street effective self defense Judo is that way to go In my opinion.

Where I come from, Finland, anything that involves kicks is nearly useless, because most of the time everything is covered in snow and ice, so trying to throw kicks just ends up in slipping. Hard pass for Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Capoeira, all that stuff for street fighting over here. I’m not the right guy to comment on their effectiveness in MMA though, I only have a few street fights and some minor boxing (about 1 year now) and a long Karate career (a little over 8 years) on me. Zero actual MMA, but I do some sparring with dudes of different martial arts and styles with loose, MMA style rules. Still, even in loose rule sparring I always tend to prefer punching over kicking.

Wingchun can work in the street but knowing wingchun does not give you a huge advantage in the ring. But the biggest disadvantage is thinking you have an almost mystical edge because of your wingchun. Also if you wanted to see any significant victory it would be because a highly conditioned athlete is using it under completely open bloodsport conditions. And of course the other martial arts would be aloud to also strike the eyes groin and throat and knee joint as well . And most so called masters don't actually have the stomach for that . Nor does the audience or the MMA fighters lol

21:50. When I was competing in TKD, we use punches to create space to counter. The person throws a body kick, block it with one arm and punch to the chest with the other hand. You can score with a kick or two when they're off balance
@magnum567134
@magnum567134 2 жыл бұрын
@isoin If you're talking about a follow up kick, that's why you punch at the SAME TIME they're kicking and knock them off balance while they're on one leg, so YOU have the opening instead of them. If you come from another background, like Muay Thai, where you keep your hands up all the time, understand that TKD point sparring doesn't operate the same way. You typically AVOID head kicks all together through your footwork and leaning away. Most scoring comes from body shots, so it's perfectly valid to fight with your arms at your sides

ITF TKD can be pretty legit. It's the original South Korean military style that Gen. Choi Hong-hi later brought to North Korea. In the biographical book "A Killing Art", ITF TKD is credited with contributing to South Korean military victories where there was heavy hand-to-hand combat including the Battle of Tra Binh during the Vietnam War. The dilution of the art into modern WTF TKD is blamed on top-down government-led pressure campaigns for South Korean dojangs to exhibit Olympic excellence in the run-up to the 1988 Olympics.

The book actually demystifies TKD quite a bit (i.e., instead of claiming that TKD is "thousands of years old", it shows the art's humble origins when Gen. Choi (as a youth) stole the money his mother saved up for his schooling, got into a gambling dispute with a wrestler, and fled to Japan, where he trained in karate just in case that wrestler and he ever come to blows if he goes home to Korea).
