Ed Chen (played by Tim Chiou)'s accent sounds a lot like a Chinese immigrant who grew up in the US speaking only a little bit of Mandarin. I grew up in the US, but exclusively spoke Mandarin at home growing up, so while I have a natural accent and cadence (how I speak and pause, etc), I sometimes make odd word choices that sound natural to me but sounds awkward to fully native mandarin speakers

I liked when you made a video on the show, you didn't judge them too harshly, the time when it was made it was much less common to use any form of foreign language as part of a series, probably why the actors didn't find too much time to learn proper pronunciation. "What. Was. That?" That was comedy; though 1) it sounded a bit like cantonese 2) he was speaking while moving his mouth as little as possible which IS a good tip for speaking with a better accent. The Chinese mouth is generally closed or nearly so while speaking, so others don't see your teef, your foodz, or smells ew ur breath. Chinese ventroliquism is easy level ventriloquism!

A metaphor is using a word or phrase that means one thing to describe something different like this: "She stole my heart". Literally: she cut out the heart and took it. Figuratively: He fell in love with her.

Great video! Love ur emphasis on how intonation (sentence flow) makes you sound more native. It’s true 💯 %. Metaphor and Analogy AREvery similar. In my mind metaphor is a longer example where you substitute 2 or more different objects to represent another idea. Analogy is more a simple, direct 1:1 comparison. So yeah, analogy is right!

There is a TV series from the US which has some Cantonese spoken, I think there is only 1 character that can actually speak Cantonese, and it also has a lot of martial arts in it. The series is called "Warrior" it's based on the writings of Bruce Lee. You may like to check it out. It is set during the Tong Wars in the late 1800s, Ah Sahm, a martial arts prodigy from China, immigrates to San Francisco and becomes a hatchet man for the most powerful tong in Chinatown.

When I watched a similar video I felt discouraged because I'm learning Chinese since one week. With other languages I could speak from the get go. But with Chinese you have to take a step back and start with the absolute basics. Now I feel the struggle of learning a language that's not even remotely close to the languages you already know. Studying alone I try my best to do it right but I'm not sure whether I do it right even when recording and hearing myself.

Jimmy is not a native speaker of Mandarin, he has mentioned this alot. Cantonese/Shanghainese is better. He's just good at imitating mainlanders. Also The other character is an ABC (in the show and real life) so actually i think the way he speaks mandarin is quite fitting for the show.

根本 It meant (originally/at first) kind of connotation. Eg. 我根本沒做過。I never did it. (It also has a sense that they never did it in the first place) 我根本不愛你。In fact I don't love you. Or it could be expressed as I never really loved you. The 根本 ads a sort of time length to it. This phrase is mainly used when someone assumes that you love them and generally spoken with the addition of 過。past tense. 我根本沒愛過你。Also 不愛 is replaced by 沒愛。

I’m just seeing this now, so not sure if you’re still looking at the comments, but the actor (Tim Chiou) that plays Ed Chen is in fact Taiwanese. Also, he speaks English with an American accent, so he’s playing a Taiwanese American character rather than a Taiwanese character in America. In that context, English without an accent and decent but somewhat off sounding Chinese with a couple missed tones is spot on for the character en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Chiou

Silicon valley really gives you that cringy feeling (in a good way). Definitely one of my favorite modern comedy series. Funny to see the Taiwanese accent on the big screen! Once you mentioned it I heard it too, the softer SH/CH/ZH -> S/X/Z makes it a little gentler. I've heard it's considered a feminine accent? Is that true? Also I wonder how easy it is to understand traditional characters for mainland chinese. I've been learning the traditional characters and I definitively recognize some simplified characters. But the brain is much better at simplifing complex stuff than complicating simple stuff so it might be easier to go traditional -> simplified than vice versa. Typing characters on a keyboard is still a pain no matter the character set. 天啊！我認為寫中文太難！
