The CHIRP\Yaesu 'bricking' is a bit of a Chinese whisper that relates to a much earlier version of CHIRP software and older radios such as the FT-8800. The software overwrote the EEPROM so many times that it went over the write limit for the EEPROM. Whether this was an error with that particular release of CHIRP or the EEPROM not having much memory isn't clear, but Yaesu did issue a warning not to use CHIRP on that particular radio (source Yaesu UK). It appears to have been addressed in later versions of CHIRP, I also suspect Yaesu have increased the EEPROM sizes\write permissions or whatever the equivalent these days, possibly even over-writeable maybe? I've used CHIRP on my FT8900, VX-3, FT-2 and FT-3 without issue, useful for initially getting all you channel memories duplicated with your rigs in the same order but that's about it. The excellent free Yaesu software is a lot friendlier and allows you to use the SD card too as well as being able to import\export with other Yaesu software. I believe the RT systems software adds additional functionality such as being able to import from repeater book.

Is this method also applicable for multiple Yaesu radios? In particular the FT-991A. This FT-991A radio does not appear in the chirp radio list.

There is free software

Wouldn't recommend using chirp with yaesu digital radios. You can brick your radio, and won't be covered. Don't use chirp

any evidence to support this ?

@@HamTechRadioScannerDrones using CHIRP has caused damage to our customers radio beyond repair. This has been discussed numerous times and has damaged a wide variety of radios. Damage by using CHIRP will void the warranty of the radio.

@@HamTechRadioScannerDronesYeasu USA. CHIRP can damage radio and void warranty on radio. It should not be used for software programming purpose. We supply free ADMS model software or other purchase options exist. I have had a few messages sent to me today again on the topic of programming software for Yaesu radios. We, Yaesu, do have ADMS software for some but not all of our radios. If you use ADMS software it will work and NOT run the risk of damaging your radio. Other software options do exist and are not made by Yaesu. Some of these options do cost money and some are free. Just be aware that when using any 3rd party products (software in this case) you take a slight risk. If damage is caused to your radio by 3rd party devices it could void the warranty. This is not a blanket statement but more so for people to be aware of free, reversed engineered, or other means of creation. An example of this is the CHIRP software which has damaged radios. The customer was out $250 + dollars as damage was above and beyond repair. A company that makes a 3rd party device usually stands behind their product and if using one you might want to see the backing of the product. One of these messages today stated that using a 3ed party, paid software, might have caused damage (and it was NOT RT Systems). They have been advised to call our technical support department for further assistance. All these are posted on yaesu's official page
