We do a lot of APRS ( automatic packet reporting system ) on this channel, and the FT-3D is an awesome APRS rig.
It comes with a built in GPS, and a 1200bps, and 9600bps APRS modem.
This video goes into detail with every setting, from sending beconds to digipeaters, and igates, as well as sending and receiving APRS messages.

Keep 'em coming! I received my call sign two weeks ago. I subbed and I'm running through your videos. I set up APRS and every so often when I check the s list I see my call sign on the list. Why? Is that when I do a manual beacon TX?

Yeasu needs to hire you. You did a fantastic job explaining not only this radio, but also the APRS system. I don’t know why none of the manufacturers employ a map stored in memory to be displayed on the screen showing APRS station locations instead of the crosshairs. Even Garmin does the map on screen in the Rino GMRS units.

Very nice to see instructional videos specific for the mighty FT3DR! If anything its great to just be able to confirm your settings for various things like APRS. You can have one setting wrong and not be able to do what you want to do.

Good stuff. Was a little fast but very well explained. I got my new Yaesu FT2DR working in less than 30 minutes. I am on the sats for 1 year now. Made 2000 contacts. As well as 38 on the ARISS repeater a few weeks ago. Downloaded many SSTV images from the ISS as well. Now I want to try the APRS on the ISS. 73 Mike, ve4mm. See u on the birds.

Do you know anything about D-STAR? I understand DMR and WIRES X, but cannot grasp how to work or use D-STAR for some reason.

It's an awesome little radio so far. The programming cables and PDN kit is quite pricey however.

@@ModernHam, yeah I noticed that. I was also considering a Kenwood TH-D74A for that reason, however I've watched quite a few videos on it and I realized it is pretty easy to program by hand compared to my uv-5r. I would have probably picked that Kenwood, but it's 150$ more lol, and I quite like the look of the ft3dr. I'm mainly interested in aprs, and a generally better radio. Then again I still have to take my technician license test, I'm considering asking my local club if they could schedule a outdoor or online meetup. 73s to you!

To be honest I've never heard of this happening, as usually APRS software allows for adequate room for the call sign, and will cut off the message before it gets too long.

I really appreciate your vids. I was interested to see that you got into a higher cost HT solution for APRS, rather than sticking with something that works with APRSdroid. I'm curious if you miss the ease of messaging that you get with APRSdroid? [aka, having to press a button 4 times in order to get the letter you want, etc...]

I know this is an old article, but, FT 3DR, on screen the A12 is flashing, it recieves APRS signals and not sure if it is send. Never saw it flash before. How do I cure it?

Got a ft3 2nd hand. Trouble with aprs decoding. Do you have your power savings off? Anything else you can think of that may effect decoding? It seems like its missing the 1st part of each packet. I have RX power save off. Also have tried with squelch turned off or at min.

The only thing I could think of is squelch is too high. And it could also be the other station if you haven't tested it with a different one. I keep powersaving off.

I have a handful of antennas that I can use with the FT3DR. How can I determine how an antenna is putting out without asking another station for a signal report? Maybe a next video on this subject?

Have it setup the same as yours on a FT2D and when i select BCN-TX it does a double beep and no beacon. SO what is the difference. and it does not send out a beacon every 2 minutes

Seem to be having problems tx'ing a beacon or msg. It seems everything is set up properly and I'm receiving packets fine but when trying to manually send or tx a message I get double beeps and it won't send. (Ft2dr) Any ideas?

Do you happen to know if you can use ARPS functions without a license. Due to COVID lockdown, there are no exams available in my area..

You can listen and decode all you want, just can't transmit. You may be able to find online testing though!

So on my FT2DR, I followed the steps. And upon activating the beacon with BCN-TX, I only get a quick "Beep Beep". And that is all.. No indication it has transmitted. Any ideas? Thank you for your help. 73

Id' make sure your "GPS Power" Is on. If it is, you may need to do a firmware update.

@@ModernHam I had the same problem. Seems GPS power needs to be on first, then you can go back to #16 and SMART will be there.

Hi there guys. At 7:13 in this video, the BEACON TX has THREE options: AUTO, MANUAL, and SMART. Well, I do NOT have the SMART option !! And I don't have a CLUE why I don't have the SMART option. Anyone?? 73 de Robbert / TA2IX (aka PA3BKL)

The smart option requires a GPS, as it uses your speed to determine when to beacon. Maybe the GPS power is off or disabled?

Oddly mine did not have Smart as an option either. I messed around with the TX and Mode from Frequency screen and it showed up. Don’t know exactly what I did. What I don’t get is the first time/day I ran APRS I received messages, and not one since.

So, if you go to number 27 in the APRS menu, its called "smart Beaconing" change to Status to Type one or perhaps type two. then go back to number 16 in the APRS menu and the option will be there. kinda dumb , but whatever.

You did a great job explaining things but you really should actually DO the things you say to do. Sometimes you say, "...and enter the callsign here" but you don't actually do that. When I do some of the things you say to do I get error beeps and I'm stopped dead in my tracks.
