In this video, I demonstrate one way to make chlorine gas while exploring some of its properties. I also explain how to set up various kinds of gas drying tubes which will be used to provide dry chlorine for upcoming experiments.

Hey nice vacuum/air/water lines. How big is your hood, do you have a lab tour? For neutralizing acid vapors I use dilute ammonia in a bottle, it has the advantage of smoking so you know when it reacts, but I wonder if it will not react with Cl2

+TheChemistryShack well, not as bad, the Golden Book of Chemistry recommends it in fact. Now that I think about it... yep, it's probably even worse.

Can you do a fluorine gas generator but not with glass somthing that doesn't react like nickel which forms a protective layer when it reacts with the fluorine .
@miamama97765 жыл бұрын
Do you not know how dangerous fluorine is? Look it up. For example, it can react with water to make the extremely dangerous hydrofluoric acid.
@derekwashuck76915 жыл бұрын
@@miamama9776 yes I do I actuly have hf but I don't have a nickel pressure vessel to use to contain the fluorine gas that will react with the fluorine to create a protective layer unlike the silicon in glass that will corrode when exposed to fluorine . I know all about the dangers of fluoride chemistry and just like alkali metals the halogen gases are dangerous and reactive .
@matthiascarroll19244 жыл бұрын
Derek Washuck have you tried silver plated glass like from Tollen’s reagent? I don’t believe HF reacts with silver, never knew about Nickle.
@miguelchacon27173 жыл бұрын
Technically by electrolizing potassium biflouride you should get flourine gas at the anode, but the problem would be getting the nickel equipment and container to store it some how. Don't play around with fluorine, it is very dangerous. Be safe
@christopherleubner6633 Жыл бұрын
Fluorine can be stored in ordinary carbon steel tanks. It can be generated by decomposing CoF3 or electrolysis of HF with NaF added. The anode must be made of platinum iridium foil mesh, the cathode, simple nickel will do. It makes H2 at the cathode and F2 at the anode. All plumbing must be either fluorine passivated steel or ptfe. 🤓

Whats the purpose of drying a gas?
@cienciabit7 жыл бұрын
Remove the water that is mixed with the chlorine.
@donperegrine9227 жыл бұрын
Yep. Think of the word drying" being replaced by "de-hydrate" (as in dehydrated raisins) and that is the logic! Most experiments either produce H20, so require dehydration afterward; Other experiments can't tolerate water (such as air humidity) so require drying BEFORE hand....And so that's the purpose!

You can turn the rest of the chlorine (assuming you are using elextrolysis) to hydrochloric acid by mixing the gas with hydrogen in a quartz tube with a uv lamp next to the tube, and dissolve the hcl gas in water
@christopherleubner6633 Жыл бұрын
You can chlorinate lime to make Ca(OCl)2 which is pool shock chlorinator. Chlorine will also compress and liquify into bottles. The material is plain carbon steel for dry chlorine, it is easily dried by simple refrigeration followed by a chlorine resistant dessicant. 🤓

@@doctorpurple5173 Yeah, me too, it's very nasty stuff. Everyone attempting this, please perform this reaction in a properly functioning fume hood (front face velocity of 100 feet per minute or more), or on the outside WHILE wearing a respirator with the appropriate inorganic gas filters. Also scrubbing the gas beforehand by connecting the tubing to a sodium bicarbonate solution is wise, but watch out for any suckback and be cautious of any gas that escapes neutralization. Remember, chlorine gas is a deadly chemical warfare agent that killed thousands in WW1. And it is more toxic than potassium cyanide. My lungs are still permanently scarred because of an accident I had while experimenting with this chemical as a kid and I still have breathing and cough problems. Be careful!
