This is a stunningly beautiful walk, covering 5 miles of the best creekside walking in Cornwall.
Starting at Helford village early in the morning, we climb over the headland to Manaccan, a village full of thatched cottages. The church in Manaccan plays host to a fabulous fig tree but it is not growing in the churchyard but rooted in the wall of the tower. Some 200 years old, the tree grows within the rubble of the church wall but beware! - anyone who picks a fruit will be doomed to bad luck!
After exploring Manaccan, we follow Gillan Creek as far is possible before turning back along the south bank of the River Helford. This shoreline, offers secluded coves, inaccessible to vehicles and they are therefore incredibly quiet even during the busy summer holiday season.
Full of anecdotes and little snippets of history and the usual banter, join us as we explore this little bit of heaven in Cornwall.
The standard description bit…
We are Sarah and Andrew and we film our walks around Cornwall and publish on KZfaq, usually weekly. Sometimes we stay in accommodation in Cornwall and upload our vlog. Sarah is fascinated by sea glass and likes to collect it so there may be the occasional sea glass video too. The channel is a hobby and we both have normal day jobs!
Frequently asked questions:
What camera do we use?
Since December 2018 we have used: Canon Powershot G7x MkII
How do I find the books you use?
Most are still in print although some we pick up in charity shops and may be available on Amazon secondhand. Please refer to the video for the book titles. Every video shows the book three times. Sorry but we can’t put a link in every description.
Best time of year to visit Cornwall?
We love May, June for flora and fauna, July and September for spectacular scenery.
What is your dog’s name?
Sorry but we do not release the name of our dog, perhaps you can make up your own name for him.

Lovely area. The villages in the southern part of Cornwall are beautiful. But as an American, I find the roads quit scary. They are more like paths than actual roads. I would need a driver to get me around. And yes, Andrew, if I was driving, there would be lots of "hitage" happening. Finally, Sara, you rock Cornish Walking Trails fashions. Love your hoodie today. 💕👟🐕🍁🌞

So peaceful. And all things crossed I will be there in 4 weeks time! It's a part of the Lizard I haven't explored before although those tiny narrow roads are a bit hairy!! I predict a lot of reverse gear will be needed! Hopefully in mid October it won't be that busy, but you know the feeling....you get to a bend and hold your breath waiting for another vehicle to appear round the corner! The Helford creek area is where they filmed Poldark's rescue of Dwight Enys..doubling up as France! I'm going to find the Cornish Curiosities Book you had with you Sarah. Looks interesting. I like quirky things! Such a quiet, peaceful & tranquil walk. Fab. J x

Beautiful walk through this lush area and as always with a lot of interesting information 🥰 Thank you! Here is some trivia from me 😊: A copy of HMS Bounty was built in 1962 for the making of the movie Mutiny on the Bounty. This ship visited Bergen in 2011, and it was really interesting to take a look both on deck and inside. Sadly this ship sank off the coast of North Carolina during Hurricane Sandy in October 2012. Hello from Southern California! I've been obsessed with Cornwall since I saw the 1970s Poldark series...and then Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca. Alas, my one and only trip to the UK was in October many years ago, and we were advised to visit York instead. On blazing summer days here, I love to sit with a cup of tea and tag along vicariously on your refreshing coastal jaunts. I will get there some day. Your tours are wonderful.

What a lovely trek, with an interesting combination of sights to see along the way! I adore Cornwall's thatched cottages, some of which look to me more like stately manses that just happen to have thatched roofs. Impressive stonework can be found nearly everywhere you glance, and the abundant flora makes me long for a wee country garden to call my own. I especially enjoyed the creek/riverside route you took, complete with a gorgeous ocean view! Your videos always leave me grinning. Thanks for posting!

Seeing the speed of those cars in the narrow lanes, we have very similar lanes close to us, where we often walk. If I see a vehicle approaching at too higher speed, I stand out in the road until they slow down. Works every time. They’re all local people and should know better. That gate had a proper Cornish latch on it. Doesn’t cost a penny.

Being where that Fig Tree is,it has to have been seed accidently planted from a bird eating the fruit from an even older tree elsewhere that may not be there anymore. The one next to the Church is not a very impressive specimen for 200 years old due to obviously being in a terrible position,I've seen much much larger specimens that are only 30 years old,I've definetly seen many that are more impressive at only 10 years old too. Cuttings are very easy to grow so maybe the church can allow somebody to prune off some material and have a special day where they sell all the cuttings rooted in pots for others to grow and therfor the whole village can say they have plants from this apparently famous specimen. At least that would preserve the tree in the form of siblings as its very likely to eventually strangle itself out. Incase the church is worried about the health of the parent plant, the sap is latex,so it's very good and preventing infection from being cut-Just don't get in your eyes and wash off of hands(Gloves and goggles would be a good idea)Just do during summer so the wounds can all calous over. Im more interested in the Euphorbia you passed in the lane at the very beginning of the video(Also has latex sap) because at a glance it looked like Eupborbia Longifolia which has a beautiful honey fragrance when it flowers,,If it was Longifolia as hard to tell from a distance obviously, they also grow very easily. Relaxing video. Is that also Sedum 'Autumn Joy' Infront of the Fig ?

Stunning walking tour full of interest and humour as always, the narrow lanes with the ‘hittage’ marks were quite daunting! Some lovely thatch cottages, I loved Andrews story about the boat 🛶 & Brandy ending up at the Isle of Wight, the fig tree was quite impressive, but I thought it needed a bit of t.l.c. If it is to last another two century’s despite the warnings of ill luck! that massive tree you hugged Sarah was magnificent, this was a fabulous and informative tour, your four legged friend looks to be a good tracker dog and is always in good spirits, thank all three of you for some wonderful entertainment👏🤗 p.s remind someone to put some fresh water outside church for doggies🙄p.p.s can’t get rid of the image of hens fighting to get through cat flap/dog door😂

Hi Sarah and Andrew, what an absolutely beautiful walk, and a really, really interesting video, many thanks. Hello Sarah and Andrew, I have a lovely wide, mature fig tree in my garden in Greece. It produces figs every year from both old branches and new shoots. It gets seriously pruned each February enabling large spaces in-between the branches to allow light through for the figs in summer which are always covered by some leaves, otherwise it gets way too bushy! 🍈🌿 Looking at what resembles a 'daughter' type fig tree ( mature fig trees as I have noticed here, have several widely spread out thick branches), I'm wondering if the roots 🌱growing out from the church wall actually have enough strength to produce figs due to its position and of course in need of daily strong🌞! Liking the sea glass collection as always!😊

It is a challenging position to grow! I think maybe you are right and if it was tended, i.e. some of the young, sappy growth removed and it had less to support, it may well fruit! Sarah :)

Most figs grow off last years growth...looks like this one has been pruned maybe every couple of weeks, a bit like my partner, who always asks the barber for a number two hair cut haha! Check out Mlgardener channel for his tips on growing figs 4 years ago. I have just bought some young fruit plants from Morrisons for £2 each, but no figs, had to nip into Aldi and picked up a pack of four figs to eat, so just wondered whether they can be grown from the fruit itself... new subscriber here, this walk you did was wonderful, brings back fond memories of visiting the Helford area.

£2 per plant sounds like a really good price! My Dad was curious about growing walnuts from a walnut nut and he was successful. We wonder now how big it will grow, being a natural tree and not grafted to a rootstock. He has planted it in a field so size is not a problem, just a fascination or curiosity! Sarah :)
