I am from Falmouth and was in Mawnan Smith during the war from 1941-1943. I have that book, and remember all the American troops doing their training all up the Helford! We ended up living at Swanpool. I live in Canada (Ottawa), but returned to Cornwall many many times! You never get Cornwall out of your system!!

Hi Sarah and Andrew. I really enjoyed your muddy occasionally rainy walk. So much history the sound of the waves lapping on the beach and on top of that so peaceful and quiet. Dogs made it fun especially your puppy digging a Hugh hole near where you were sitting hope Andrew filled it in.

DIG!!! :D I love the stories you collect, and it's so fun to see the places. Pitchforks and petticoats make a great tale! A particularly unfortunate English slang term here in the U.S. is the one for cigarette. (And I don't mean 'smokes'.) Hubby is a big WWII history buff, so I'll share this video with him. The bit about the seaweed was fascinating. Fewer and fewer people are around now who remember living through the War. My mom was seven years old, living in Los Angeles, and was terrified to wake up one night during a blackout. My grandfather was a Block Captain with the Civil Defense, and they had hardhats, shovels, and sandbags in their yard as after Pearl Harbor it was feared the Japanese would bomb Long Beach Harbor and nearby cities in California. Whether it was Napoleon or Hitler, it seems Cornwall was the first line of defense. You have a great history of brave people standing against the enemy. Thank you for sharing it. :)
@CornishWalkingTrails

You have interesting stories of your own. I never really thought that you guys would have similar experiences with blackouts and threats of invasion during WWII. Thanks for sharing! Sarah :)
@SpanishEclectic

@@CornishWalkingTrails One difference is that the U.S. didn't join the War until after Pearl Harbor was bombed (Dec. 7th, 1941). I had a school friend (she was a very late baby; I'm not that old...my Dad went to Korea in 1953), whose Dad was in the Navy and actually stationed aboard one of the ships that was destroyed. He was on liberty and had spent the night in Honolulu, thus escaping the fate of his fellow crew members. In one of your videos you explore a lookout bunker by the coast. There are some here in San Diego as well, in the cliffs near the Cabrillo Lighthouse. My husband could talk your ear off about the Battle of the Pacific, Iwo Jima, etc. :0

This happy fun video has made my whole weekend! (you'll now know the American name for bumbags). And thanks for braving the rain and all the muddy lanes to bring us another CWT gem. It must have been surreal for locals to have such an influx of American servicemen and all those coastal manoeuvres, but I guess they appreciated the importance of their presence. Totally agree with you Sarah about the soulless modern houses ~ at the very least you think they might have used some granite cladding on facades to tie in with local tradition. That was an impressive sea-glass haul! ~ beachcombing is just the best thing ever! (so missing Cornwall just now). Doggie junior makes me smile so much :)

You two make me chuckle! I’ve literally just returned from a short break at Budock Vean near Mawnan Smith, and we walked the coast path to Maenporth, although it was a sunny but windy day. What a lucky chap you are! Fab dogs and a great companion. A Cornish woman with a beautiful natural soul.❤ Hey and she laughs at your rubbish quips.😂 I took early retirement from the MOD for health reasons. I visit all the places you've been to and Devon too. It was interesting to see the American influence in Cornwall during the build up of DD and the liberation of Europe. It was also the end of the British Empire. The decades to follow changed Cornwall and the UK FOREVER. EU, immigration and the migration of the property rich Londoners.😢 So thanks for your witty creations in God's country. Reminiscing the truly good old days❤
