Akebia quinata is a woody perennial that grows either as a twining vine or a ground cover. It comes into leaf in early spring and shortly after leafing is adorned with beautiful purple flowers that form edible fruit in August - September. For fruit production, it is best practice to grow two plants in order for cross pollination to occur. The plant can grow in part shade and makes a good candidate for a vertical layer in the temperate forest garden.

What other variety did you have to plant?

Or was it just another vine of the same type?

Yes! They fruited well. Unfortunately I had to move to a new location so I wasn't able to try the fruits. I have yet to have a good Akebia fruit. Most of them were very seedy.

I have akebia and it second year i tried to pollinate female flowers and when I bought akebia I also read some information on flower sites although there was nothing about cross pollination. All they say is just delicious chocolate fruits from beautiful vien. I just found about need of two different varieties last month :C and im pissed off cuz if i knew i would buy different akebia even last year. But from what i see, this male flower you took is not fully bloomed, its petals must go upward and its centre is much darker when it has this powder ready to pollinate. I was observing my flowers for a long time and just check it with your finger, if it leaves powder its good and you can take it to cross-pollinate. Sorry for my english😅

Why did you choose to grow the akebia on the apricot tree instead of a trellis for example?

Because it was available. Just looking at the background while he's moving around in this video alone will tell you that he likes "natural". A tree is a natural trellis 👌🏾 He also stated he's only running it along that one portion of the tree. That tells you he's privy to the dominating nature of the vine. If you add up what he's saying I'm this video (aka actually listen and apply a wee bit of comprehension 🙃), he's already answered the question you posed before you posted it 👌🏾

@@ThatStevenLouis Exactly. Vines on trees is a really cool technique as long as the vine doesn't overwhelm the tree.

They are cross polinated, that means you need different types of this vine, not different plants of the same type....There is no use to do what you have showed here.
