I also grew up as a poor white kid in a trailer, and I almost spit my coffee out laughing lmao 🤣
@lewisedwardson7776
@lewisedwardson7776 Жыл бұрын
That was 100% facts. I was a white kid that lived in a trailer and went to a nearly all-black school. I understood all of this real quick, and it was very infuriating as well as scary, to have the adults that were in control of everyone's' lives be so clueless. In school, when somebody wants to fight you, you are now going to get fought AND punished no matter what you do, and oftentimes in some of these really messed up schools, the people going around starting fights with everyone aren't even getting punished and that's the reason they're able to act that way every day. When a group of people are about to attack you, and everyone is watching, the teacher's advice is not going to work. The adults all tell you to basically act like a wimp, say you don't want to fight, and run to a teacher for help. But what they're not considering is that you have to survive for 7-8 hours a day in that building with these same people for years. Snitch on them today and they will find you again. If they get expelled, their friends will find you and it will be even worse. And other people watching will want to attack you too, because you made yourself "look like a bitch". When people are bullying and attacking you, especially physically, you have to stand up for yourself, it's the only way to survive, and schools need to ALLOW you to stand up for yourself. For me, getting constantly reprimanded for defending myself was way more traumatizing to me than the people that would gang up on me and slam my head into concrete. Fights I could handle, physical pain I could handle, but feeling like I had no choice but to be a victim, getting punished just for hitting back, made me feel like the whole world was against me, because my whole world was. And his joke about hitting his friend to rise up the food chain is realer than it sounds. A lot of the kids that started fights with me were actually other white kids that acted like they were my friends and then attacked me in front of everyone, so they wouldn't get bullied, because they were bullies. I even said some mean things to kids a couple of times in elementary school to try and climb up that food chain, but I didn't like how it felt and I regretted it, I felt like I should have been defending them instead, but I was a kid under pressure that wasn't thinking straight, and I made a mistake. These schools are toxic. Adults are running these schools like they don't remember what it was like to be in them. They aren't, won't, and can't, protect kids from every negative experience. So they need to let them protect themselves when no one else will. Otherwise they are forcing them to spend their formative years as victims.

I grew up poor as sh!t. I remember being a freshman and getting made fun of because my dad found a pair of size 13 chuck Taylors. I wore them because I didn't have a choice. I was a size 10 at the time. So embarrassing being that kid. I fought a lot because everyone always picked on me for my clothes. By the end of freshman year I had started my own business doing landscaping and washing vehicles. At 15 years old I was making about $60 a day working for 3 or 4 hours every day after school. It built character and made me stronger. Now I make more than most everyone who made fun of me.

As an inner city teacher with plenty of Jamarcuses and Cody's throughout, he ain't lyin'. As a poor Black kid whose mom literally had a wardbrobe designated as 'school clothes' and 'picture day clothes' (yes, one specific outfit for picture day, lest Lifetouch and/or Olan Mills messed it up), it's doubly true. And I see some of these posts trying to come at him, like we don't know good and damn well there are Black kids like this. I understand the feeling of being wary of being laughed at...but sometimes defensive Black people, you have to assume there's no malice until you SEE THE MALICE. It's better for your sanity, trust me. Cody had no malice here...equality means sometimes being the butt of the joke too. Bill Burr, Gary Owen, there are plenty of non-Black comics great at this.

This is what race jokes look like when you put love into the joke instead of hate.
@NostGold
@NostGold 2 жыл бұрын
You'll have to explain what 'hate' and 'love' is in a joke, because you can still mock someone without using swear words or being derogatory. To me he alluded to the typical stereotype of black people being violent and aggressive and not understanding what the alternative looks like in walking away or choosing 'peace', imo the joke was distasteful among other quips he made. I get that comedy is art imitating life, and subjectivism adds to the nuances of one's performance, but reaching for the age old stereotypes cos its low hanging fruit, really cements the lackadaisical efforts of this comedian.

Not that it’s necessarily a “good or bad” thing. I, personally in my own personal experience and opinion believe that people of colour they feel a societally “engraved” pressure to always have their kids looking like they’re not struggling, I was raised by a single brown mother, and I would be considered spoiled because I would always have the newest gadgets newest technology newest shoes or iPod or iPhone. But I always knew how the food bank like felt and I knew we were living even below “paycheque to paycheque” but strong resilient independent brown moms’s would never let you feel that way. Only after hitting like 18 Highschool age did it set in. Soo Cody is such an gr8standup comedian because he speaks from a place of realism, his example of the way that this kid JaMarcus always had the new shoes and was always confident about them. In direct; even almost opposite situations where Cody as a young “trailer trash” type of young person, (to be extremely crass and simplistic!! He’s obvs has a lot more depth to his knowledge) was going to school in the telltale white non brand name clothes for more than one day in a row or during the week having to use the same clothes

Growing up my native Canadian indigenous mother single mother always always always made sure that I wasn’t acting like some type of silver spoon rich kid to the other children I went to school with. She would often offer rides home to the children in my school who didn’t have enough money that day for the bus ride home, at the time surely I was obviously embarrassed but looking back now I’m so glad that she instilled this deep responsibility of empathy. respect; and the ability to not be an elitist. One thing that sticks out that she told me is that “nobody is better than somebody else”, you could be a successful banker wall Street downtown big city office and all that. but if a homeless person/someone down on their luck. Asked you for money on the street or even just a simple handshake and awknowledgement and you denied them that basic human decency then you’re not rich at all. Your poor in the only thing that matters. Being human decency,respect,empathy; and kindness U cannot take your money to the grave with yoy

@Auntie Nunya I mean tbh being a poor black Southerner we were on welfare, but we didn't spend our cash that way. Im from the city so i wasnt farming and shit, but while I wasn't sent to school looking any kinda way, we also didn't blow cash on KFC or Popeye's (side note: I'm actually from Louisiana and Popeye's kinda sucks) nor cancer sticks. Sometimes people just have shitty life situations and there's nothing wrong with needing help, it doesn't mean people on it are lazy or stupid or bad with money, or vice versa for the people who aren't. There's a balance between appearances and blowing cash sure but we aren't all just completely ignorant to that fact. Just commenting to say don't assume all of us are like the people on your street.
@slimtee2
@slimtee2 3 жыл бұрын
@Auntie Nunya simply stating, all poor black families are not what you are describing. Stop the negative stereotyping, while trying to use your family as an example saying that all poor white people apparently flourish from being poor, which is not true. Many black people have success beyond poverty. Just because you don't know any of us, doesn't mean we don't exist.

@@SomethinAintRightHere about a decade actually. Owen was a piano guy frat guy act before turning over a new leaf. Fun story since you’re a Bear, first met Owen with Jimmy Fallon. They were like besties. Oh have times changed.

Omg! This is so true. I have WAY more clothing than I'll ever need because of psychological scars left over from accidentally wearing the same jeans twice in a week in elementary school and getting roasted for it 😭😭😭 Black people 🥴🥴🥴🥴

I have scars, too, but I hate shopping. I have good taste and I want to look good, but I have zero interest in shopping and finding things. I think it’s resistance as a result of that trauma, if that makes any sense.
