DPRK Explained

Күн бұрын

Chongjin, North Hamgyong is the largest industrial hub in the DPRK, the provincial capital and third most populous city in the country. Despite all of this, it's rarely visited by foreigners. However, its history is incredibly interesting - from Japanese Imperial-era fishing village to major city in under 100 years.

Refreshing to see someone giving this country a fair shake. You don't get much sobber informations these days. I am so tired of these documentaries of western news outlets, that are bound up in imperialistic geopolitical power dynamics. Everything is filled with the most absurd propaganda, without any source. Unfortunately a lot of people are cattle enough to believe everything they are told. They are more similar to the picture in their mind, they have of north koreans, than they might think.

This man is not only filling my city environment addiction, but also giving me information about usually a very closed country. I kinda want to watch something like this for cities around the world too. It's really amazing.

I visited the DPRK in 2018, Chongjin was definitely the highlight for me. Seeing it really gave me a great deal of respect for the country, given the stories about how the place has done so well since the Arduous March. As well as how despite the blockade the DPRK has been able to avoid so many problems that are so pervasive in the west

@@alexanderblohme5044 I do quite frequently. Sadly people don't really believe you when you do. To be fair I think the DPRK is shit at PR, if you defend Cuba in the west you get a decent reception, but the DPRK's over the top propaganda and messaging puts a lot of westerners off.

Have you read Bruce Cummings account of his visit to NK in the 70-80s? Truly remarkable country in the way that they rebounded from the devastation of the Korean War alone
@monarchofthesea9395
@monarchofthesea9395 2 жыл бұрын
@@hihihi518 I haven't, but now you mention it, I absolutely should. I'm more familiar with the DPRK from the 90s onwards. Of course I was told about the previous eras, but it seems that so much of modern Korea is built along the aftermath of the devestation of the 90s. While before that it was pretty similar to most socialist countries, although a very well managed one.

@@monarchofthesea9395 Do you have any reliable resources for modern NK? And yes, you should! I’ve been chipping away at Cumings’ books on pre-modern Korean history. And I find it fascinating that up until the Arduous March that NK was doing relatively better than the south.

I think your videos are really well made and really valuable as you are the only channel I know that is dedicated to explaining these aspects of the DPRK, especially as most people probably don't know much about the country outside of Pyongyang. The production quality is great and the research is really solid too, making for an informative video all around.

I always love channels like these that actually go detailing the inner workings of "controversial" countries. I wish there were more channels like this for different countries, past and present. I'd love to see how, say, Imperial Japan functioned politically, or how the CCP reformed under Deng Xiaoping, or how Fascist Italy built houses. Whether it's simple or complex, it's still so interesting to see how different nations function, especially when they're radically different from our own, and don't catch constant flak from it by the one explaining it

It be interesting to see if anyone would dare to make a video on how Japanese Imperial economics worked before 1945, its really strange mix of Feudalism and Capitalism. It also be interesting if anyone would show how Fascist Italy, Francos Spain, Taiwan and even South Korean Fascists used welfare heavily during the cold war to appease workers from uprising.

Im wondering how north-korea sees their history and culture of the days before the country was split in two. Food, architecture, games, music, stories... Is this being kept alive, or are they distancing themselves from it? Etc.

I would say they’re leaning into it, more so than the south. A good indicator is the name used for the country, in the north, it’s Choson, the name of the last unified Korean dynasty

North Korea is THE most nationalist country in the modern world and they extremely stick to the traditions. I can confirm this as a South Korean. From everyday vocabularies to clothing styles and ceremonies such as weddings or funerals, North Korean people preserve much of our ancestors' traditions. Some South Korean scholars are even studying the cultural aspects of North Korea as a living mirror of the premodern Korea.

@@ignisilluminati interesting! I expected them more to be like what I learned about mainland China, being very patriotic, but also kind of erasing history ...
@ignisilluminati
@ignisilluminati 2 жыл бұрын
@@Esth.1 They surely distorts the history, but not the traditions. It's the difference between China and North Korea. China had gone through the Cultural Revolution that cut its people from the old concepts. China had always pursued the leadership in the communist bloc, and the Cultural Revolution was a symbolic event proving how desperately it tried to portray itself as the "living figure of socialist ideals" (cut from the past to pursue a new world).. in contrast to the Soviet Union which they believe to be "pseudo-imperialist". On the other hand, North Korea had never cared much about communism or the leadership within that bloc. What it wanted was just to justify the ownership of the Korean nation and its heritages. Thus, it encouraged the old traditions to expel foreign cultural influences and to portray itself as "true Korea" by maintaining national purity.. in contrast to the South Korea which in their view is "contaminated" by the western cultures.

Somethings perhaps not known of that region of the world. We are aware of Japanese colonial powers, the opposition, etc. But what is never reported in the western narrative is how places there, before or around the time of conflict, is they were haunts. A very eerie sort of place where one would expect to see ghosts rather than a lively civilization.
