I loved this video, because (without wanting to throw shade at other content creators) there's a practical focus on how to apply colour theory and everything else discussed. Lots of us love painting but don't have that artistic instinct or flair, but seeing it in action is easier than being merely told what colour theory is. I've been planning to start an Idoneth Deepkin army for a while and was almost paralysed with thinking about a scheme. Whilst I took the plunge to buy the paints I wanted a few hours ago before seeing this video, simplifying the process to a few common sense principles as you suggest reassures me as that's what I hope the scheme I've gone for will acheive. The black and white filter is a trick that seems so obvious but I'd never even considered, I will definitely give that a go with a test model.

This was a great video. I also like how you showed that there were times where you did a great job with the paintjob but had accidental coloring mistakes ("mistakes"), like with the Goblin and Squig. You're right the focus is drawn away from the face etc

Someone had their coffee this morning. ^_^ Seriously though, this short video taught me a ton. I have a color wheel, and . . . That's as far as I got. Most of my schemes have been me futzing about for a few weeks then copying it to the other models. But, now I feel like I have an idea how to take a color I want to use, and then quickly build around it. Going to give it a try on my new desert battlemechs. Thanks for the video.

All of my color themes for all of my armies are red, black, gray, bone/ivory, and white. My Blood Angel successor chapter is primarily just black and gray with red trim. I am a pretty simple person when it comes to color. Literally, all of my IRL outfits are just black, red, and gray, and that is all I like, lol.

I painted an orc boss that I just love, and I keep wondering what I accidentally tapped into that helps him pop. He does have great contrast, but I wonder if I happened to triadify the colour wheel or something as well... I'll have to check!

Nice video, I kinda went back at painting mini thanks to you ^^ I was wondering if there is a super mate medium that you would recommand? I feel that sometime citadel paint isn't very consistent so I tried using medium as a sort of a mate varnish. I got good result using lahmian medium but it's still a bit too shiny for me. I'm painting night lords so I really need a nice mate finish otherwise it kill the lightning effects.

You can always use AK ultra matt varnish once you finish painting it, it will absolutely flatten any shine/glossiness

How would you do colour harmonies for metallic gold? I’m having troubles trying to figure out Gold for Tau Empire miniatures. Usualy, when trying complementary colors or tria, the result seems too contrasted (just like the suig exemple). What I use now indeed is neutral/desaturated colors as a second color and the harmonie just seems better. However I still use pure complementary colors not for wide areas but details that must attract the attention such as the eyes of a space marine. Just a question, can anyone tell me how the technique used in the video to put black in slots of the minis (such as the border of the shoulder of the space marine). The paint seems to spread naturally in the slot. Is it oil painting or a special medium ?

The fact that you prime with Black, Grey nor White is because they're not colors they're values in dark and light BUT like our pathetic and poor eyes can't see all the colors (like bees and birds) they need a bit of color in this case, fun fact the shadows are never black nor grey they're purple-ish nor red-ish but our eyes can't see that and just interpreted as faded black nor grey.

Well I learned something about my painting style and what to call it. My main way of painting is to have a primary colour, a secondary colour about a quarter to a third of the wheel away, and then use the various tones inbetween from those extremes. For example having blue armour, red hair and various details painted various shades of purples inbetween.
