As someone who has had an 18lb pike on an 3-14g rod. I can confirm that its not for big pike but big pike more than often wont say no to small lures if the opportunity presents itself😅😅 Guaranteed you will struggle but if you manage to land it, It will be an experience that you'll remember for years to come until you snag an even bigger one on the same gear.

Enjoyed that.Deadbaited for 20+ years and sometimes got a big S style plug wet.Recently started drop shotting.Time is against me these days so lures are the answer for me for short sessions.I had no idea there was such a variety and the size of the larger lures surprises me.My pb fell to a sprat!

I've got a Leeda Northstar 12' Bass rod that works really well for the bigger lures, quite stiff and robustly built, just not pretty. Probably way too long for canals but great on the broads and wide rivers. Can cast up to four ounces. I use a 4 piece spinner for the small stuff or more often I nick my son's no name junior match rod because that's got the most ridiculously nice bending action.

I've been following you for quite a while now and i have to say: in my opinion you're one of the best "fishing dudes" on youtube, everytime i see your videos i just wanna go out fishing (although i sometimes have difficulties to understand your accent :D )! Thank you for that, and keep on with your great work! I'm "relatively" new to the whole lure fishing scene (can't wait for my 4th season - pike fishing is now closed until may :-( ). Currently i'm thinking about buying a new setup for heavy lures. Currently i fish, for pike, a Prowla Platinum Specialist 40-80g 9' + Ryobi Zauber CF 3000 and a Prowla Platinum Specialist Pro BC 80g 6'6 + Abu Revo SX. They work fine for me, but recently i started fishing with real eel and i find it uncomfortable to fish the 30cm eel with my BC setup. The rod seems to weak for me. Usually i fish lures around around 15-20cm (swimbaits, wobblers, big metal lures, shads), and i keep catching these "jacks" (mostly around 30-50, sometimes up to 70cm), but i never caught bigger than 92cm in my area. I know the big old ladies are there (river rhine), a friend of mine lost a 130cm+ and caught 104cm a few days later, also i lost another 130cm+ in summer, so i wanted to chase them with big meals :-)

Great video and presented brilliantly. Well you've certainly taken the confusion out of it for me Paul. I think that as I'm only likely to be fishing the canal at Carnforth, and the stretch the P.A.C have taken over at Glasson dock Lancaster, on and up to Preston. And taking into account I'm an old codger now. maybe the G lite you use, using the top 5 lures you talked us through on your last video should do me. I'd be over the moon casting and retrieving for perch and some decent jacks. I daresay I could also use this similar set up for catching the Bass that come into the harbour at Morecambe. This is where I'll be come the 1st of march until the back end of October. If it turns out I can handle a reasonable pike around the early doubles, then maybe I'll step up a size or two. What do you think? As I say, I'll only be on the canal. I live in between Dewsbury, and Batley but don't see me joining any of the local clubs like Bradford city again. Thanks for the tips, turns out there is a lot I didn't know, my set up seems to be light weight, I have two light set ups which will probably struggle with a bigger pike.

My favourite rod at the moment is a fladen xtra flexx 10-30g for I think 30 quid. And it's a belting little rod I fish the Lancaster canal at the Preston end. Iv had small perch to mid double pikes I can't fault it at all. It's sensitive enough to feel the small hits and got enough bollocks to get the big crocs in. The rod was designed for crash diving cod/coal fish so it gives a beautiful bend,almost in half a few times which is Shit scary even tho the manufacturer says it unbreakable because its made from basalt fiber. But only time will tell. Top vid mate as always.

Accuracy with your casting important, I often cast under features overhanging branches , etc or tight to far bank features , nothing worse than seeing your favourite hooked up on a branch .

thank you for your answer! i will check thoose okuma comodo and citrix to see how it fits on the rod... one friend of my told me that for the big heavy lures like 40 to 80gr its better to use the round profile multiplicators...becsuse the low profile ones are not made for casting heavy lures...but i haved seen a lot of experimented anglers casting heavy lures with low profile multiplicators... i haved tried the low profile Abu Garcia Revo Toro Beast and i really like it on this rod! its a bit expensive but i haved save some money from few weeks and i want to buy a good reel...my budget its around 250-300€ thank you again!

Hahaha , ........about 25 years ago I started out with a 9 foot DAM telescopic rod 10-40 grams casting weight , equipped with a fixed spool and 12 lbs monofilament ! Using spinners , plastic shads and spoons , it caught me heaps of pike back then , but admittably not the most big ones . After that first "lure" rod , I got into using 2 piece 9 foot seatrout rods sporting casting weights of up to 45 or 50 grams , these were my universal lure rods for years , used up 3 or 4 through the years , still equipped with fixed spool reels , but using braided line . I never liked using shorter spinning rods , since I focus on further casting , .....and if I would not have used these rods from my little boat as well , I might have even gone for 10 or 11 foot seatrout rods(though 9 footers surely are still too long for a boat , most likely fishing from the bank , though) At some point I also got into multiplier reels , so nowadays I could also present a similar rod selection , as you did in this video . I've figured out , that you talk a lot about lure weights in relation to the particular rod's rated casting weights , ........in my opinion that's just one aspect , .....one also would have to take into consideration , that certain lure models , in particular deep diving crankbaits and big bladed spinners ,do generate a lot of drag , which might already arch a softer rod quite a bit just on a retrieve, so not much more power reserve left for a hookset ,........even though,if the rated casting weight matches the weight of those lures . Regarding fixed spool reels , my suggestion for the beginner would be , not to go for those cheapo reels from the sales bin , also do not go after 12 +ball bearings and stuff , .....look for a reel with a thick and solid bail connected with a rigid bail spring , the bail should snap close quite solid but naturally the bail must not close accidentally on a cast either . Also very important for a lure fishing fixed spool is a 100% perfect winding of the line , so look for reels sporting so-called "worm shaft drives" or "worm shaft gears". Imperfectly spooled line would sooner or later lead into bird's nests wound around the rod guides and cause loss of lures and line , .......such happens in particular, when working lures in a twitching and jerking manner , only reels with a 100% perfect wind can handle this problem , others can only be used with lures which are steadily retrieved ,....so it's better to lay a bit more money for a reel . Just mean to tell,.....I've learned the hard way ,........greetings , Dieter

I find practice makes perfect , practice casting at a target in the garden with an old lure with no hook , this is how I mastered my low profile Citica multiplier .

Great video! I did order Daiwa Lexa 300 reel and now I'm looking for a rod to combine it with. The rod I've been looking for is savage gear butch light, but I'm not sure which way I should go with the lure weight limit. Mainly I've been looking for the 10-30g and 10-40g. I also heard that these rods are more sturd than what it says in the lure weight limit (for example, I heard that 15-60g version is more like 25-80g). So if I buy 10-40g version, could I cast like 55g lures with it (storm suspending wildeye swim shad) and some lighter poppers (8-15g)? I would love to hear your opinion! Cheers!!

Really good video actually. Do you still twitch the really big lures on the stiff set-ups? I know you obviously do when using the jerkbait technique. Is a more steady retrieve more suitable for the squirrel and big eel? I've seen you on others videos varying your speed of retrieve more than the action with the big stuff. Ta.

hi i have aquired a couple of carbotec lure rods. one is 5 to 11grms. the other is 10 to 40gms. can you explain what i can fish for with these please. Carbotec is not a famous make, these rods were designed by a guy called Geoff Salisbury. i have owned and sold his feder rods for £1100. a bit of a cult following. What the rods are worth isnt the point. a close friend of mine passed away last year suddenly ata young age and i want to use them. its all new to me as i was bought up on the Hampshire Avon and Dorset Stour where i still live. Barbell and big chub i can do but lure fishing is new to me. i love your videos and have learned a great deal from you. just require that little push. no canals where i live but lots of rivers.Thank you Brian Wimborne Dorset

Hello, im looking into buying a new big pike setup, think im gonna go for a multiplier reel purely because I wanna try one out and a rod for hauling out some big lures for big pike maybe say 100g mark i think. However there are so many rods and im getting lost plus I'm still not getting it, lets say you have a 6ft, 7ft, 8ft and 9ft rod and they all have lets say a lure weight 30-75g (just for argument sake), what would be the reason of picking say the 9ft over a 6ft?

Ive Been using spinning reels for a few years now and I would like to upgrade to a baitcasting set up. I can't afford hundreds of pounds because I'm only 15 but I was wondering if you would recommend any of the kastking reels as there in my price range and seem worth it. Hi mate Just a few questions I've been fishing for pike like mad lately and have been fishing for pike for 3 years but lately got into it more, my lures range from Westin mike the pike, to savage gear 19cms, just wondering you said about big pike and how they take very big lures. I'm wondering should I get a jerkbait rod ? A lad I know is after getting a 20+ fish on a hard eel i believe a 24cm( on the river I fish) , I'm fishing places that have big pike but you don't always get them! Normally rivers and then in lakes in summer ( do baitcasters cast out far? ) I've got a few doubles on lures and that, but would it be that im not fishing the right big lures ? It probably sounds mad ahah, would love to cast them squirrely burts, I've recently started fishing on a deep river and after noticing all my lake lures aren't doing the job.. what rod and reel would you suggest ? I have a medium baitcaster set up but I would like to switch back to fixed spool reels for a heavy set up as I just prefer fixed spool. The only problem is I have no idea where to start and I don’t want to buy a load of poop. By heavy I mean up to 120g max. I’m willing to pay up to £200 if needs be.

Great video !! I have currently been fishing with a spinning setup but I am looking at a bait casting setup so i can cast the bigger lures i have hidden in my table box. I have been looking at the Savage gear MPP 6'6 big lure jerk 150gr. and the Abu ambassedeur 6501 c3 reel. I am almost convinced of buying this setup, but I would like your opinion on a possible second reel that could fit the rod and that is good for casting the lures that weigh around 60-110 grams with no problem. thank you so much in advance, keep up the good work :)

My pikes in years have never complained about my 40€ wallmart combo... they only cared about the lures that i gave them to play with. From 1kg small ones to double figures and all of them are saying the same.

I say only maybe---- I've seen BIG pike caught on small chatterbaits (1/4-1/2 oz)--- 42" plus- and quite often, not just once in a while.----
