Just an old lady interested in resin art, and investigating vacuum chambers vs pressure pots (leaning toward pressure pots currently), and was so proud to hear you mention ASME! My dad is now gone, but was a member of ASME. I remember him talking about being involved in making parts for the space shuttles (not the one that blew up. lol) ANYway...thank you for making some important points clearer for me.

Good eye work. lol I have the 5 gal. CA and love it. My mill molds are 12 1/2 out to out so I use mine on its side all the time. It sits in a cradle that is notched around the wheel fittings so it stays on the pot all the time. The wheels are on the fittings and therefore can be used upright with no modifications. I use a shelf in the pot and level the shelf with a level and also on top of the pot, from front to back, with a level. I shim the legs if needed to level it. I use it all the time in this form even for small items. One can get a lot on the shelf which is just slid in a little below center. I store it on the floor, on its wheels, and roll it out of the way. Good vid, Lee

Hi Zac, thanks very much for all of your great content. I recently purchased the HF pot and converted it. Using the Loctite product you recommended, I have zero leaks from any of the connections or the new regulator as the HF regulator leaked too. That said, where the top seals to the pot itself does slowly leak. I can not maintain 40 psi. It will leak down over night to about 15 psi. Any tips on what I can do to make the top air tight? Sanding or different gasket material or any other ideas? I have tried the top in several different positions and used some vice grips to help tighten the small wing nuts as much as I dare. These steps produced no improvement.

Hey thanks for sharing! Quick question if you dont mind, I purchased a Harbor Freight pressure pot as an entry level tank. There is a casting that I would like to do that involves a 1" x 1/2" x 12" piece. The mold will not fit horizontally. I was just curious if you knew if the pressure casting works alright vertically before I waste a bunch of epoxy :) Thanks!

Make sure to check all fitting on new pot and soap test for air leaks .apply loctite 545 to threads of valves. . I can thank Zac for his previous videos on CA pressure pots . Not essential as you can use a heat gun on resin bubbles , but you don’t get that compressed structure as you would with a pressure pot at 60 psi .

Great video! Other than price and maybe taking up a little more space, is there any drawback to getting the 5 gallon if you want to be able to do an occasional larger item? Too many times in the past I bought something thinking it would be perfect only to find out later than I should have upsized. In all likelihood, I will only own one pot (and want to buy a C. A. Tech) so hope to make the right purchase. Thanks.

Hi Zac, I am looking at a pressure pot as I do artisan jewellery, so pieces are very small and all hand shaped, so I pour in block moulds of about 5cmx9cm, and I can do 12-15 at a time. I was wondering if you can put shelves of some sort into the pot to stack moulds, almost like a 'high tea cake stand' kind of deal, or can you only put in on bottom layer at a time?...This would really slow my production down. thanks very much for your info, it was very informative on the pots. cheers

Can you replace the factory fittings on a pressure pot? I got my 2.5 gallon C.A technology’s pot. And I saw the safety vavle was leaking and I spoke with a C.A technology product specialist and he said they’re meant to be constantly fed air ( the resin casting version) and I was like “ okay that’s fine np” and I set it up I adjust the regulator and it leaks air slowly. I spray soapy water and it is leaking air BUT it was leaking air from the the bottom of it on the nipple. I take out my handy dandy sealant tape and take the safety vavle off and to my surprise is the nipple that’s attached to the lid is stripped?!! ??? is it safe to remove it and add a new nipple with loctite?

Hello Zack! Can I convert or modify a cooking pressure pot to pressure epoxi resin?
@skoue4165
@skoue4165 5 жыл бұрын
NO. The most basic reason is that a pressure cooker is only designed to handle 15 PSI. THat is the high setting. Since you want a pot to handle at least 40 PSI that Pressure Cooker ain't going to hack it. To even get close you would have to disable all of the safety measures on the pot. That is probably not really possible on a modern pot and unfortunately possible on old ones. You absolutely DO NOT want to do that because you are creating a bomb. Gasses compress and when they rapidly expand what you end up with is an explosion. Remember the Boston Marathon bombing? That is what happens when an over pressurized pressure cooker fails. All an explosive powder etc. does is create a huge amount of gas. "low explosives" like gunpowder don't explode if you just light a small pile of it. They go up sort of like flash powder. However if you contain the gasses so they can't freely expand you get an explosion. So the pressure build up would be much slower in your pressure cooker but the explosion when the pot fails will be the same. Sorry for the long post but a lot of people may be thinking the same thing and what you are talking about is extremely dangerous. You might get away with it a bunch of times because most things are designed to withstand a multiple of their stated rating, but one failure could be fatal and you would be going over twice the rating so...
@lilolmecj
@lilolmecj 4 жыл бұрын
S Koue that was a very thorough explanation. When I was listening to Zach saying no to pressure cookers I got to thinking about canning and most items you shoot for 10 psi, significantly lower. Then there are the clamps, which was another clue...I do have a question if you have time. Is it essential to use a pressure pot when combining wood and resin? I am hoping to get the lathe set up over this winter, I have a variety of interesting wood, but some of it will need to be stabilized.

Depends on the resin. Ours take 15 minutes. Old "slow" resin took 1 hr. That's to demold. They continue to harden after they come out of the mold.

19l / 5 gallon beer kegs are rated at 130psi, surely they could be used for small projects?

I’m not sure why but I barley need to tighten the wing nuts on the cheaper pressure pot and don’t lose a bit of pressure.

Is there anywhere that pre modify or make these specifically for resin casting?

There are a couple. California Air Tools makes one that's pretty much ready to go out of the box. You can get them at Turners Warehouse: turnerswarehouse.com/products/california-air-tools-5-gallon-pressure-pot-designed-for-casting?ref=nvww

I'v been wondering about the dished bottoms. Why not just put enough resin in the pot to fill the dish and let it harden to give yourself a flat bottom?

Are all the different pots the same to convert to a pressure pot or are some easier than others?

That's a really good question, should have covered that in the video! Most of them are pretty similar overall, but C.A. Technologies has a model that is specific for resin casting that only requires adding a few plumbing fittings to the regulator, all the parts we would remove are already gone. The link to C.A. Technologies pots on the "Tools I Use' page on my website takes you to the resin casting models: nvwoodwerks.com/tools/

Do you use any kind of bucket “liner” in case the resin leaks out of the mold to protect the inside?

That sounds like it didn't fully cure. You probably didn't mix it with the proper ratio or you didn't mix it enough
